About Sally Fine

Sally bought this cottage with 2 friends who helped her renovate it. The cottage was the home of 'Uncle Jeffie', a local fisherman. His sister still lives next door and helps out with caretaking. The cottage had many little rooms but it was renovated to open the space and allow the beautiful Bahama light and breezes pass through. Sally lives in Boston, Massachusetts.

Sally Fine purchased this cottage in 2009

Why Sally Fine chose St. George's Cay

Sally came to visit the island to celebrate New Year's 2009. On her next trip, she found Uncle Jeffie's cottage and saw a dream come true in this traditional stone cottage. Joe and Piera visited the island in 2008 on a sailing trip. Sally, Joe and Piera decided to buy the cottage together and make themselves a winter retreat.

What makes this cottage unique

This is a unique open plan with a huge deck to allow lots of outside living, eating, sunning, and entertaining. The top floor is one big master bedroom with it's own bath and private deck. 24,000 BTU split air conditioner added March 2015. The cottage is close to the harbor (you could tie up your boat to the seawall), a short walk to the beach, in the middle of this friendly island.

We just left and had a great vacation . The cottage was spotless and very close to the beach and fishing piers . The owner Sally was so helpful about all the details and her caretaker in front was the nicest woman ever . Restaurants were varied and we loved the Sandbar. My husband walked to the piers and fished every night til dark and always caught fish .

Owner's Response: Yes, Farrie, my caretaker is a gem. She is the sister of the previous owner of my house, better known at Uncle Jeffie. Now what exactly were you catching off the pier at night. I have not tried fishing at night but clearly it is worth the effort! Thanks for your review!

Great location, above expectations!

  • 5 of 5

Beautiful views from the upstairs. Clean inside and out with great amenities. Could not have asked for a better deal in Spanish Wells. Satellite smart TV, internet, air conditioning, all relatively new. A nice porch with a grill and covered seating overlooking the creek. The owner contacted me to make sure I knew how to get to the house a few days before my arrival. The neighbor (family) made sure we had hot water and gas for the stove the day we arrived and was available if we needed anything.

Two Gems in the Eastern Bahamas: comfortable house and friendly island

  • 5 of 5

Spanish Wells is a welcoming place for those who enjoy beautiful beaches, friendly people, a slower pace of life, and golf cart or bike travel. Night life is sparse and exceptional restaurants few. But the beauty of the small town and the expansive empty beaches make up for the less urban way of life. This island is very different form the 10+ I have travelled to in the Bahamas.

Best way to travel to Spanish Wells is on the ferry from Nassau which drops you in the heart of this small town; the second best by air to north Eleuthera, from Nassau or Ft Lauderdale, plus a short taxi and ferry ride to the town dock.

The two story small house was exactly as described and seen in the VBRO listing. Unfortunately, it was not easy to find, from the instructions, as the owner Sally was out of the country. Her map got us to the street, but not into the small turnoff for the house. A local police officer took us and our luggage on a ride in the police golf cart and we eventually found it. Sally just needs to provide more explicit instructions, in addition to the map, i.e. go to 13th street, turn right, and right again at the first street . And you are there. Because Sally was off island, the next door neighbor had aired out the house, brought fresh bread and was there to ensure everything was fine. Unfortunately again, the AC was not checked, so on the 4th day, when we had a heat wave, the upstairs was extremely hot. The Freon leak could not be fixed over the weekend, despite the best efforts of Sally from afar and the neighbor. Uncomfortable. I would suggest someone check all the systems in advance of guest arrivals.

The house itself was lovely. Well equipped kitchen, good store of supplies, clean, nicely furnished, with two beautiful decks, beds firm and breezes good throughout the multi-windowed house, located on a hill. The sea can be seen from the house.

The house is within walking distance of the grocery stories, restaurants and beaches. But people do not walk much, except the school kids. Most golf cart around, and we were offered rides several times until we got a cart to explore the two islands, George and Russell (can be done in a few hours). If you need a little more excitement than natural beauty and friendly people, Harbour Island is a boat ride away, with good restaurants, boutique stores and a beautiful pink-brown sandy beach that stretches for miles.

We will come again to both Spanish Wells and to the cottage. I highly recommend both.

Owner's Response: Thank you for your review. I am sorry you had a tough time finding the driveway with the map. I have revised the directions on the map I gave you to be more precise and it will be easier to find. The AC is now trouble free. You were the first person to use it! I had tested it after it was installed and it worked then. Hope you can make it back to Uncle Jeffie's house some time soon. Sally

Genuine Bahamian Experience

I ran out of writing room, but wanted to mention that Owner Sally was very helpful, prompt with emails and went out of her way to make sure our experience was the best it could be. We hope to return to Uncle Jeffies Cottage.

Genuine Bahamian Experience

  • 5 of 5

As mentioned in several other reviews, this is not a touristy destination. It is a genuine experience of local culture. Myself , my wife and 9 year old boy stayed ten days in Uncle Jeffies cottage in March 2015. I can honestly say that the cottage was comfortable and clean, the local people were kind and welcoming, the island extremely safe- very little crime- and the beach was maybe the best I have ever seen in my life. The waters around the island are crystal clear turquoise/teal, the beach sand powdery white/pink.

My son spent hours and days fishing off of the local docks and caught many different types of exotic looking fish. There are dozens of docks for fishing boats and pleasure craft. No one seemed to mind that we did a little fishing anywhere we liked. We cooked up the fish some evenings for delicious feeds. My son made a local friend who was one year older than him and they had a great time together. There is a small liquor store less than a block away (Buddas) which was convenient for wine and beer and cheap rum (9$ for a litre). There is also a well stocked grocery store at the top of 19th ave where you can get anything you need. There are three or four restaurants on the island. One is the Shipyard which was very good. You can get to another one (take out place) on Russel island (via a small bridge) called The Sands. Friday night is the big night there. Have a mojito or local beer - Kalik, Sands etc.

A local delicacy is conch. It is fished sustainably (from what I've heard) in the Bahamas. You can have conch salad, which is delicious or deep fried conch which is my absolute favourite.

This is a very small island and has its own distinct culture and local accent. I believe the island is only three or four kms long , if that. The local economy is dependent upon crawfish harvesting, fishing and tourism. There are many outfits on the island willing to take you out deep sea fishing for probably 450 to 600usd a day.You can catch marlin, grouper, yellowfin tuna, barracuda among others. If you are on a tighter budget and know how to operate a boat you can rent one (17ft) for 150$ a day to explore.

Many folks on the island drive around in golf carts. This is particularly fun. You drive on the left. Everything is very relaxed. On bahamian time as they say. Carts can be rented locally for approx 225 a week.

We loved beach combing for treasures. We found two different types of starfish and live sand dollars in the water.

Snorkelling galore.

Owner's Response: I am so glad that you and your family happened on Spanish Wells as a destination and that Uncle Jeffie's cottage met all your expectations. Sounds like you had a very successful fishing excursion; I know this was something your son wanted to do. You certainly made friends in the neighborhood! Your son's new friend comes by asking when you will return. What should I tell him? I'm pleased to have two more artists enjoy my house! Hopefully the warm feelings from your Bahamas vacation will stay with you up North.
