Private Villa In Horse Ranch Outside Of La Fortuna

Bedrooms 1
Property type villa
Minimum Stay 2 nights

About the property

1 Bedroom, 1 Bathroom, Sleeps 3

The villa looks out on horse pastures and misty mountains. Fresh soft breezes cool the generous kitchen/dining area. Lush gardens are all around you, emitting night scents and day scents that leave you smiling. Pick fresh fruit from the citric orchard and squeeze your breakfast juice. All the soft noises of animals -- from toucans to horse hooves, the water buffalo’s soft braying, and the baaa of sheep remind you that you are connected to the earth, the soil, the farm.

You are as quiet and private and isolated as you want. Or wander down to the stables - play with the pets, feed some animals, or watch the horses in training. Horses are available for riding (additional cost). The ATV's are fun, too. And if you wish to see the world from above, we operate the only hot air balloon in Central America.

Turn off your villa lights and walk barefoot from your garden door to the pool after sunset. Or warm up the Jacuzzi. The night sky is spectacular when there is no artificial lights around you. You'd almost believe electricity had not been discovered. You'll discover what we call our 'velvet nights'.

About Esteban Elizondo

Monica and Esteban. We are both Costarrican, originally from Cartago. We moved here escaping from the noise and the fast life of the city. We found paradise and a great place to develop our passion... Horses. We run a horse farm and an adventure company that includes the only Hot Air Ballooning operation in Central America. We strive to give our guests a sense of traditional Costa Rica country hospitality. Our farm has spectacular horses, from fiery stallions to placid draft horses, and our soft stepping Pasofinos. We have an assortment of pets -- from a Dachshund to a water buffalo, and a pet pig that sleeps with the horses, plus several sheep that share dinner with our mares. And our three kids. the heart of our life in our farm. Centaura Farm is a lot like Charlotte's web. Our farm has an old-fashioned soul with very modern ideas of comfort. Our goal is that you leave us with huge regret - and that you will be back soon.

Esteban Elizondo purchased this villa in 2013

Why Esteban Elizondo chose La Fortuna

Our farm is only 20 minutes from Fortuna (the base of fiery Arenal volcano) yet borders on wilderness, rivers and forests where we ride horses and ATV's and hike without the press of tourism. Bird watching and playing in hot springs, swimming in crystalline waters -- all nearby and all private for you. Plus hot springs and belching Arenal volcano only 20 minutes away. It is a great place to raise our family.

What makes this villa unique

Peace, tranquility and the earthiness of a working horse farm. So far away from the crowds and the noise, yet 20 minutes from the tourist Mecca of Fortuna, and Arenal volcano.

Our favourite place in Costa Rica!

  • 5 of 5

We loved our stay at La Finca. Esteban is a wealth of information about the area, and Costa Rica. He talked to me on the phone before we even got there and gave me valuable information that helped me make better decisions when planning our trip. He helped us with a car rental, and arranged zip-lining, rappelling, and rafting tours for us. His farm also offers a number of tours, and we went horseback riding, and took ATV's to some natural hot springs. All the tours we did were small, personal, and fantastic. In fact, it was just my husband and I with the guides every time! The cleaners are excellent. The unit is spotlessly clean, and stays that way throughout the stay. The bed is comfortable. Every morning I enjoyed sitting having tea on the veranda and watching and listening to all the birds. There are parrots and toucans, and a whole bunch of other birds all over the place. There is so much to do in the area that I wouldn't recommend staying any less than a week. We were there 5 days, and we could have stayed much longer. Highly, highly recommended!

The Epitome of Costa Rica

  • 5 of 5

I don’t know why it has taken me this long to write a review, perhaps because I’ve been in denial that it’s over, but this property deserves a review, even if it’s 5 months late. Like others, I was very skeptical of this place. I mean, how can a place for $100/nt have NO bad reviews…how can a place be THIS good. I took a chance anyway and I’m glad I did. I have been dreaming of Costa Rica for years and this Villa and La Finca is the epitome of Costa Rica. The grounds are absolutely breathtaking, the people are unbelievably accommodating and so helpful. Seeing this was our first trip to Costa Rica we knew we wanted to spend half our time in the rainforest and half our time at the beach, so we stayed here for 4 nights and spent 3 nights in Manuel Antonio. Looking back I don’t regret it because it gave us a well-rounded experience of CR. However, when we do it again I would spend my whole time here. You are spoiled here and are made to feel like a guest….not a tourist. We went horseback riding, ATV-ing and did the zipline tour recommended by Esteban. All of our experiences were amazing and we felt like a VIP the entire time. My husband doesn’t love to spend money on traveling, so to hear him say this is by far the best vacation he’s ever been on meant a lot to me. The only thing I regret is not brushing up on my Spanish more before coming here. The people were so nice we wish we were able to communicate with them better. We left a piece of our heart back in Costa Rica and I can’t wait to come back to this Villa. My work screensaver is a picture of the beautiful view from our Villa, it’s not even close to seeing it in person, but it’ll have to do until we can come back! Thank you for the memories Esteban & family, I appreciate it more than you know…

Highlight of our vacation!

  • 5 of 5

This was our first stop on our first trip to Costa Rica and we couldn't have picked a better place to start our vacation. Not realizing how far the airport was we ended up arriving late but Estebans family was kind enough to wait for us to let us in and lead us to our casita. The grounds are beautiful and the casitas are clean and comfortable. The highlight of this trip was the 3 hour horse ride that went through farms, ranches and a river! We don't ride often so it was a plus that the horses are highly trained and aim to please. The ride was so smooth that we weren't even tired at the end. Danny was an excellent tour guide and Esteban and his family are very friendly. Not only was it the highlight of our vacation but it was the best value! We will definitely be back.

Not enough words to describe how wonderful and special this place is...

  • 5 of 5

My boyfriend and I found Esteban's place on vrbo while looking for something a bit "off the beaten path" near la fortuna. Initially, based on all of the incredible reviews, I was a bit skeptical that I was missing something. But after doing a lot of research, we decided this seemed like an opportunity we had to pursue.

When I initially inquired about our dates with Esteban, he recommended that I call to set things up. I called and right from the start, he made us feel so comfortable. He gave us loads of great information for planning or week in CR and also convinced me that we needed to spend more time than we initially were planning on at La finca, and I'm sooo glad we took all of his advice. He also reserved our rental car with the necessary insurance coverage through his Alamo corporate account for our week.

On arrival at Liberia airport our rental car experience was no hassle, which was not the case for some of the other customers who had made reservations on their home. We left Liberia and made it to Esteban's around 730 in the dark. He had told us that a gps was imperative, and I completely agree. This, along with his instructions made it quite easy to locate. You need a 4x4 for the road up to the ranch.

The property is magnificent. It's about 35 mins outside of lafortuna in the countryside. You are in the rainforest, on a ranch, in your own villa. The villas have a beautiful patio with table and hammock, and then separate entrances for both the kitchen and then the bedroom (which has ac, and also has the bathroom). The villas are so unique, and so beautiful. Kitchen has everything we needed (including coffee maker, coffee, sugar). We LOVED sitting on our patio in the morning enjoying our coffee while watching the birds and visiting with his dog, gypsy who would come visit with us. The villas have an alarm system for when you are not there, but you will feel so safe there that you will think this is silly. The ranch itself has an electric gate that you pass through, and safety was never an issue. We opted for breakfast 2 of the mornings we were there which was he best pinto Gallo we had and served on your patio. Can't even see the other villas. There was never anyone else at the pool, which we enjoyed a few afternoons.

About 5 min drive to closest reatuarant and 10 mins to grocery store. Take advantage of on site activities-they are private, professional, and amazing.

I have no other words then amazing. Hope to return someday.

One of the best!

  • 5 of 5

We loved our stay! The view from our villa was beautiful and it was so private and peaceful. The villa was well-appointed and immaculately clean. The toucans came and visited in the trees every morning and night--magical! The small town of Muelle had all the services we needed--grocery store, ATM, and a great little up-scale restaurant on the main highway (Rain Forest Cafe) and several sodas. The villa was a great home base for sightseeing in the La Fortuna / Arenal Volcano area (about a half-hour drive). We also drove to Zarcero to see the topiaries, and we went to Cataract Del Toro--the tallest falls in Costa Rica, and not to be missed! It was wonderful to leave the crowds and come "home" to the relaxation of our villa. Esteban was very helpful in arranging car rental and pick-up from the airport; that was a life-saver for us! Also, Esteban took us on a hot-air balloon flight. That was truly a once-in-a-lifetime experience. We would definitely come back again; it was one of our favorite vrbos. We highly recommend this location; you will not be disappointed.

Will never forget this trip

  • 5 of 5

Our trip to Costa Rica was amazing!! But I need to give credit to Estaban for it working out so well. First when I made my reservation for the villa many months ago, he gave me the best advice. First I had rented a car. He said he could rent it for us on his corporate acct and that we needed to invest in a SUV with a GPS. I was skeptical but we did it. Best advice ever!! A car would have been miserable and probably been damaged by the rocks and potholes in our journey. I was also reserving different activities and he told me don't commit yourself so soon. He suggested seeing the place, checking out the weather, etc. he was so right! What we thought we wanted to do or not do, totally changed when we were there. He helped us get set up with the activities that worked for us. He even programmed my GPS so I wouldn't get lost. I want to say that the Villa was beautiful. The landscaping was magnificent and with each step you could see a different flower or plant. It had everything we needed, cleaned daily, AC in the bedroom and a great pool. I could have spent a whole day just hanging at the villa with my binoculars to watch the birds. We also did the ATV rides to the thermal pools. I would do that again tomorrow if I could. The ride was a blast and Alonzo was our guide. I loved him. He was so passionate and knowledgeable about the land. The thermal pools were perfect and we just floated in the hot water and enjoyed a cocktail. We drove the ATVs back as the sun went down which was so much fun. We also did the horseback riding and Danny took us out that morning. This is no little trail ride. You just ride. We went through sugarcane and pineapple fields, farms, towns, rivers and meadows. The country is beautiful. We asked Danny everything about living here. We saw howler monkeys, sloths, birds and lizards. It is a gift to meet people that are genuinely kind. Estaban and Monica are those people. You feel welcomed into their home and we are forever grateful for having met them. I can only hope our paths cross again. I can not say thank you enough. We can't stop talking about our stay. Pura Vida
