About Mark Stephenson

I moved to Charleston from Key West in 1987, I began buying and restoring historic homes for over 18 years. While I lived in Key west I worked in the hotel and hospitality industry learning what makes a great vacation. I have taken that experience to start Historic Smalls Alley.

Why Mark Stephenson chose Charleston

Downtown Charleston is a wonderful place to experience life as a 'Local' with Wildflour bakery and the many hip restaurants and bars of Elliotbourgh, you can dream of making Charleston your home.

Cozy, Clean, and Comfortable!

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I spent a long weekend in Charleston for our 20th Anniversary and we were so happy with this studio apartment and so surprised at how quiet it was. We never heard our neighbors below us. The décor was comfortable and the living area was just spacious enough. There is a spacious and lit permitted parking area just a few feet away. It was everything we needed! It was so great to be so close to the historic part of the city. The free trolley picks up just about a block away and takes you anywhere you need to go. (I would recommend hitting the Visitor's Center first!) We were even given a lot of information from the owner of where to go and what to do. It was so helpful since we were first time visitors to the city. The Wild Flour Pastry next door is a must every morning! It has fresh-made quiches, scones, tarts, muffins, turnovers, and on Sundays they make sticky buns/cinnamon rolls the size of your head! They were AMAZING! (It opens at 8 am -- get in line!) The Wi-Fi worked just fine during our visit. Cable stations are very limited -- so don't plan to stay inside and watch TV all day. We never used any of the appliances because we wanted to eat at all the fine establishments the city had to offer. (Brown Dog Deli -- another must!) Water pressure seemed fine, but we had to prop open the tub drain with a plastic soda cap so the water would drain. It was so clean, you would have thought we were the first to stay there! It was such a memorable and pleasant trip! We WILL be back!

Very nice stay in great area

  • 5 of 5

I was very pleasantly surprised by how nice this unit is. The pictures do not do it justice. It is quite nice, styled like an apartment for a professional. It is very private and in an excellent location near multiple great restaurants (Xiao Bao Biscuit was our favorite!) and cafes, the free trolley, and about a 15 min drive from the airport. The bed was quite comfortable, though it is a full-sized bed so a little smaller than what we're used to. The washer/dryer had a sign on it that it was out of service but we were only there for 4 days and didn't need it. It would have been nice to have more than one bath towel per person, though, since the w/d was out. Only other complaint is the water pressure in the shower is not the best and we lost hot water occasionally during showers, likely due to the downstairs unit. The tub stopper could use maintenance/replacement, as well. Early check-in would have been nice for us but I didn't want to spend $50 extra. However it was really a wonderful stay and would stay here again.

Cozy

  • 4 of 5

Right in the middle of everything! Clean and cozy.Unfortunately while we were there the washing machine was out of order and we had to use a laundry mat. The WiFi is not good but you're on vacation! Perfect for a couple.

Comfy, safe, and central made this place a winner!!

  • 5 of 5

We had an awesome vacay in charleston! so happy I found this place as it was extremely central to everything we wanted to do. The location is perfect, especially for travel to and from Mt. pleasant, seabrook island, and St. John's island. We felt safe (two women traveling alone) and all the amenities were as described. Comfy bed was a huge bonus. What a nice surprise to have Wild Flour bakery right downstairs on the street unit for Sunday morning cinnamon rolls that were the best we ever had. Get there early, a line starts at 9:00 am! We had one hiccup with the wifi and a simple email to Mark quickly solved the issue. If I had one criticism it would be that the Water pressure in the shower needs work. Would we stay here again? Absolutely. Thx for a immensely enjoyable 4 days in charleston.
