About Mark Stephenson
I moved to Charleston from Key West in 1987, I began buying and restoring historic homes for over 18 years. While I lived in Key west I worked in the hotel and hospitality industry learning what makes a great vacation. I have taken that experience to start Historic Smalls Alley.
Mark Stephenson purchased this Apartment in 1997
Why Mark Stephenson chose Cannonborough Elliotborough
Downtown Charleston is a wonderful place to experience life as a 'Local'. With Wildflour bakery and the many popular restaurants and bars of Elliotborough, you can dream of making Charleston your home.

The property was great, the room was comfortable and exactly what we were looking for. Great location - close drive to King St and Market St. The staff was very helpful- I had emailed them because I was having trouble getting the tv to work, and they responded very quickly. The television only has access to basic channels, but that isn't a deterrent. You don't go to Charleston to watch TV. I definitely recommend this place and if we go back to Charleston, would definitely look into staying here again. The check in and check out process is also very simple. Thanks for helping make our vacation great!
Great place, great location
Perfect retreat for weekend away, easily walkable to a number of great restaurants (loved Chez Nous and the Ordinary) also stopped in IceBing just down the street each afternoon.
The place itself is great-clean, cozy, and updated nicely. We have no complaints! Will be back.
Great little spot in Charleston!
We loved the convenience to King St and it was easy to find. Very comfortable.
Cozy and convenient
We loved our 5-day stay at this VRBO. The apartment was clean and well-laid out. The neighborhood was quiet with awesome access to downtown Charleston. We walked everywhere and appreciated the flexibility the close location provided. Having a kitchen helped too as we ate breakfast at home most days. This place was perfect for our needs and we would definitely stay there again.
Good location ,clean and well equipped.
Access to the unit was complicated by a street reconstruction project right out front , but that was professionally handled by the contractor doing the work . We greatly appreciated the presence of the small washer and dryer in the unit as we had further travel plans after Charleston. Also appreciated was the local restaurant information provided by the Stephenson’s and the very good local restaurant scene. Most within walking distance .
Clean, cute and nice place.
Historic Smalls Alley is a few feet away from 'Upper King St' shopping restaurants, bars and Charleston Visitor Center. Free 'Carta Trolley' stop is 1/2 block away. Great starting point to all the historic tour facility's in downtown and close to the plantations on the Ashley River.
