Overview

About the property

3+ Bedroom, 2 Full Bath; Sleeps Up To 8 Adults With Additional Room For Kids

The aim and mission of the Windaway Estate is to celebrate the natural, native landscape of Mount Desert Island, and provide a peaceful, beautiful, and FUN spot for family vacations, romantic getaways, and special retreats. The Windaway House, part of the Windaway estate, is a perfect choice for a large family or up to 4 couples who want an oceanfront vacation in Bar Harbor, but prefer to stay just far enough away from the craziness of town. Windaway is the perfect location from which to explore the many beautiful areas of Mount Desert Island. Located at the head of Mount Desert Island in the village of Town Hill (part of Bar Harbor), each town and village of the island is a short drive or ride on the free Island Explorer Shuttle bus (which can pick you up at the end of the driveway!) Acadia National Park takes up the greater portion of the middle of the island, so multiple access points are minutes away. Though the setting is very quiet and peaceful, you'll find all the ammenities you need within a convenient 5 mile radius.

Available by itself or in conjuction with Windaway Loft (vrbo #507900), Windaway House is a new rental offering on MDI, and is a 2 story, 3 bedroom, 2 full bathroom house, with a large great room and beautiful deck. High Speed WiFi internet is included in the rental rate. All beds, bedding, linens and towels are new. One large bedroom has 2 queens, and the other 2 each have 1 king bed. Each floor has a full bath, and there is also a laundry room connected to the first floor bathroom. The large great room has brand new, super comfy seating for lounging or watching TV. There are two deluxe cots in the large closet of the great room, to make the great room an additional sleeping area for kids or more guests. Most appliances and furnishings are brand new, and tastefully coordinated. Kitchenware is high quality (knives are sharp!) and is BPA and Teflon free. Enjoy having morning coffee and breakfast with the sun, and incredible sunsets and star gazing in the evening.

Though there is SO MUCH TO DO on MDI, Windaway is a lovely place to spend a relaxing day. Take a stroll on the shore to look for seashells or sea glass. Even better, bring your kayak (or rent one from National Park Canoe and Kayak Rental- they will deliver and pick up on Saturdays!) and explore the peacefulness of Western Bay from just outside your door. Of particular interest is a small, working Oyster Farm just off the shore, which is owned and operated by the owner of Windaway. At night, take advantage of the ocean side fire pit area and absorb the Maine night sky complimented by the sounds of the ocean.

About Chelcey Dunham

Pictured above with his goat friend Marceline at his farm down the road, is Farmer Matt Gerald -the owner of Windaway Estate. Matt lives onsite at Windaway, and is a fixture on the island. Sweet Pea Farm is his day job, and is a working farm, winery, and farm-to-table restaurant just a few miles away. Make it a point to meet him and visit Sweet Pea Farm for popovers, coffee roasted onsite, free wine tastings, brick oven pizzas and Mexican offerings featuring the vegetables grown on the farm.

Chelcey Dunham purchased this house in 1984

Why Chelcey Dunham chose Mount Desert Island

After Matt attended College of the Atlantic in Bar Harbor, he decided that he had to remain on MDI. The island holds a very special energy that is both awe inspiring and nurturing. Desiring to be near her son, Matt's mom moved here too, and purchased the Windaway Estate. The property (and Matt!) retain her youthful, vibrant essence.

What makes this house unique

Matt's mom chose Windaway because she fell in love with the spot. Who could resist pristine views, gentle access to the ocean, and the surrounding wooded areas and fields? The buildings have a nostalgic charm and are unpretentious yet tasteful, well designed, and comforting. The experience of BEING on MDI and staying at Windaway is truly a gift to the soul.

Great home with everything you need!

  • 5 of 5

Our time at Windaway was very enjoyable. The house was fully equipped with everything we needed. We even cooked Thanksgiving dinner there! Matt, the homeowner, was friendly and accommodating, even going out of his way to locate a turkey baster for us when it was the one thing the kitchen didn't already have. The home was more spacious than it appears in the photos, and our two families felt we could stretch out no problem. The home was impeccably clean with towels & linens that were of high quality. Beds were more comfortable than my own! The walk down to the water is a bonus, and the view from the house itself is quite nice, although there is not a sweeping water view from downstairs. In short, we thought this home exceeded expectations and we felt sure that Matt would have happily helped us out if there had been any issues, but there weren't. He was also kind & welcoming to our dog, who liked him in return. As mentioned in the listing, many popular Acadia trail heads are about a 20-25 minute drive away, so this house lets you access everything, but also get away from it all. Great spot!

Great vacation

  • 5 of 5

My family had a wonderful vacation. The home was decorated perfectly to relax on Mount Desert Island and the view from the beach was gorgeous. We enjoyed many sunset campfires on the beach and our kids liked learning about oysters. Overall we had a great vacation - I would recommend staying here!

A wonderful, cozy vacation home to stay in Maine

  • 5 of 5

We had a total of 10 people that stayed at the home. The place was very clean, homey, and beautifully decorated. There were 2 bedrooms upstairs and 1 downstairs. The bed I slept on was very comfortable. There were 2 bathrooms, 1 upstairs and 1 downstairs, which were both very clean. There was also a laundry room with a washer and dryer. The kitchen was fully equipped with all the necessary things needed to do any type of cooking. The kitchen opened into the dining area with a double-glass sliding door that looked out into the ocean. The view of the ocean from the house was spectacular. There was also a fireplace in the dining area. The living room was very spacious with a comfortable sofa set, and a flat screen TV. There was also a wooden deck at the back of the house and also a grill for those who love grilling. We did some serious grilling while we were there from lamb meat to steaks to sausages. The house was very secluded, quiet, and a lot of privacy as it was surrounded by a lot of trees. It was very easy to drive to and from the house since there were two dirt driveways going in both directions. The house was not too far away from the Arcadia National Park and the grocery stores. It was very convenient getting around town. The manager was very nice, and welcoming. I would highly recommend this place to those who are looking for a comfortable, cozy, secluded home to stay at for a vacation. My family and I would definitely come back to this place and we get the opportunity to visit Maine again. Trust me, you won't regret it after your stay at this wonderful place.

Comfortable home in great location

  • 5 of 5

Our family of 4 and another family of 5 stayed at this home for one week. We had never been to Maine, but felt we landed in a wonderful location. The home is just over the bridge on MDI. There is a grocery store and a place to pick up (or eat in) lobster less than 10 minutes away. Most of the attractions on MDI are within a 20-30 minute drive. The house itself is very comfortable and spacious. There are two living areas. The adult couples each had a comfy king bed. The children shared the 3rd bedroom with 2 queen beds and a cot provided by the owners. Matt was quick to respond to any questions or needs. We enjoyed exploring the coast by the house when the tide went out and the fire pit by the water at night. The free explorer bus comes by throughout the day. It is about a 5-10 minute walk from the house.

Nice Setting and Well Stocked House! Fire pit needs improvement.

  • 4 of 5

This property was great for our stay. The house (kitchen specifically) was very well stocked with dishes, cooking and eating utensils for a rental. The living room is large and was very comfortable. It is located in a nice, quiet location, the only people we ever saw on the beach were the oystermen and the folks renting the garage apartment.

If you are trying to visit lots of different places on MDI, this is a great location. However, if you are going to spend most of your time in Bar Harbor and the "main drag" of Acadia, you are easily 20 minutes away. This is not a complaint - we knew it before we arrived - but important to note, especially for those with kids.

The fire pit down by the beach was a big disappointment for us. It was overgrown with weeds, and was surrounded by (I'm guessing) the oystermen's boats and gear. For such a beautiful location on the water, if there was a little more maintenance given to it, we would have used it every night! Instead, we didn't use it at all - the view from the back deck was prettier because we weren't looking at all the junk.

Owner's Response: We're really happy that you found the house to be so well suited to your needs! We have taken this review to the oyster farmers, and they expressed apologies and immediately cleaned up the beach area. As this is a working beach, future guests should expect to see some of the oyster farm gear, but they have promised to keep it more organized and only in certain spots. Most guests have expressed a lot of interest in the oyster farm, and several have actually commented that it was one of the highlights of their vacations to observe and interact with the oyster farmers. They are not always on site, but when they are, they are always willing to answer questions.

A wonderful place to stay on MDI

  • 5 of 5

There were six of us plus one dog and we never felt crowded. The house is large and welcoming. We enjoyed many dinners cooked in the great kitchen that had everything you needed. Lobster was enjoyed on the back deck. The fire pit by the beach was a wonderful place to watch the stars at night. Sunsets were so beautiful. What a wonderful private beach. We swam at high tide and climbed on the rocks at low tide. Loved seeing the oyster men working. Owner was the most welcoming and helpful we have ever encountered. Be sure to eat a breakfast and/or dinner at Sweet Pea Cafe. Wonderful brick oven pizza and popovers. Will definitely be back.
