About Corey Hetrick

Corey was raised behind the Trail Lake Fish Hatchery in Moose Pass, where his father managed the operation for fifteen years. Corey has lived around the salmon and fishing industry since he was born. He has grown up fishing the waters of the Kenai Peninsula and Moose Pass ever since he could cast a line. His knowledge of the area’s backcountry and river drainages gives him the opportunity to take people fishing to places that are truly unique and pristine. A safe and authentic Alaskan fishing experience is what he strives for; making a trip that will never be forgotten. “There is something about walking through the wilderness on a game trail to get to a secret fishing hole that makes my trips unique.” Corey is passionate about his profession as a fisherman and guide, taking pride in sharing his knowledge and experience with every angler that visits Alaska. He treats each client with the same respect and openness everyday of the season.

Corey’s parents own the Inn at Tern Lake where Corey bases his fishing operations. The Inn at Tern Lake is a beautiful place to stay, with wonderful hospitality, and minutess drive to the best fishing on the Kenai Peninsula. Trips by Chugach Backcountry Fishing are customized by the anglers to fit their busy Alaskan schedules. Corey will go out of his way to ensure the most memorable fishing experience!

Perfect family getaway

  • 5 of 5

We loved our stay in this cute home! Corey and his dad, Jeff were the perfect hosts - giving us a very warm welcome and we felt totally at home in the cabin. It's a little rustic, but totally comfortable and equipped for a large group to have a very fun stay. The kids loved running around in the field and the woods behind the house. The location is close to easy access hiking and central to explore Seward, Girdwood, Coopers Landong, Soldotna, etc. We were there as the seasons transitioned from Fall to Winter and experienced some gorgeous photo opportunities. Recommended is the drive through the wildlife refuge on the way to (or back from) Soldotna. We also enjoyed the SeaLife aquarium and the wildlife conservation center for great up-close animal experiences. You won't find many touristy guided activities after Sept 30th, but it was to our liking to enjoy the glacier as the only visitors, etc :)

Wonderful Birthday Party!

  • 5 of 5

My daughter wanted a seclueded Birthday getaway with her family and our in laws. Someone told me about the Chugach backcountry lodge located in moose pass. It was exactly what my daughter wanted. A full kitchen to cook family dinners each night and large sized bedrooms with plenty of space for every one. We rented the entire lodge for three days and it was very reasonable for the experience. One of the days we went to the Russian river for my son's and I to do some fishing and the Girls went on an adventure hike to the falls. We saw a brown bear fishing and caught a few fish ourselves! It turned out to be a great birthday weekend getaway for my family. I will stay at the lodge in the future and my wife is already talking about making it a family tradition.

Great Family vacation home

  • 5 of 5

Every summer since 2003 my family has come to Alaska to enjoy the fishing and amazing scenery that the Kenai Peninsula has to offer. We had always looked for good deals on lodging and a place that we felt comfortable to completely relax. In 2008 we began staying at the Chugach Backcountry lodge and it has become our home away from home. It is private and roomy with plenty of recreation options. We generally spend one or two days in Seward which is only a 30 minute drive from the lodge to enjoy the sea life center and a day of offshore halibut fishing. The other days we hike in groups to the hi alpine meadows or to the Kenai river in search of red salmon. One year in particular we missed the main red salmon run by a couple days and the owner of the lodge offered us a guided fishing trip that the lodge also offers. We were skeptical but decided to go with Corey on a king salmon trip in mid July. It was very early, but the end result was absolutely worth the effort. We caught some of the biggest freshwater fish I had ever seen. My son and wife caught a King each around 40 pounds and I caught one around 25. this was the highlight of our trip. We then were able to return to the lodge to enjoy fresh salmon on the provided BBQ and enjoy the campfire. Since that first trip Corey and his other guides have taken us for trout, silvers and red salmon and every time we enjoy ourselves and don't want the day to end. As the pictures show the lodge is very comfy and set in a breathtaking place in the valley of moose pass. We will continue to stay at the lodge for many years to come, and always with we had more days to spend in the area because it has so much to offer.

A wonderful "home away from home" experience!

  • 5 of 5

Our family booked the house for a week and we had a wonderful time!

The house was clean, spacious, and included everything we needed to cook, do laundry, store gear, etc. -I was so happy we chose to stay here instead of a hotel or motel-it was so nice to have our own space while we were visiting.

We were close to fishing and wildlife viewing so we never had to drive for longer than an hour to do anything we wanted-one morning we even woke up to a moose munching on a willow in the front yard!

The beds were comfortable and between six of us we each had our own with plenty of room to spare.

Corey, the invisible host was friendly and worked with us on setting our dates and allowing our little dog to stay inside the house with us.

We will definitely stay here on our next visit to Alaska!
