About Bud and Sandy Hutchinson

Bud and Sandy Hutchinson. We have 3 daughters and 7 grandchildren, and are the happy owners of a Miniature Schnauzer named Otto. We truly enjoy sharing our cabin with guests.

Bud and Sandy Hutchinson purchased this cabin in 2012

Why Bud and Sandy Hutchinson chose Northwest High Country

We had been coming to the North Georgia Mountains for a few years before we simply had to purchase a cabin of our own. With 3 levels (each level having a bedroom and bath), game room, decks, and fire pit; there is enough room for our family to relax and wind down after an exciting day enjoying the area.

What makes this cabin unique

Located in the Aska Adventure Area, this property offers all the excitement the mountains have to offer. Horse back riding, Kayaking, tubing, zip-lining, mountaineering, shopping, hiking, trout fishing, train rides, waterfalls, ice skating, apple orchards, vineyards, restaurants, etc... We enjoy sitting on the deck taking in the quiet serenity and beauty of the mountains.

We stayed for two weeks and loved every minute. The lodge has everything to make a great holiday. It was beautifully clean and well equipped. The location was perfect. Our first experience of America has left us planning to return as soon as possible.

Fantastic Family Vacation Cabin

  • 5 of 5

We totally enjoyed our time at Black Oaks Lodge! The floor plan was perfect for our family, the furnishings were lovely, beds extremely comfortable, location convenient to everything we wanted to experience during our stay. Top that off with 75 degree days and 50 degree nights....it could not have been better weather! Hope to return in the fall!

Felt like home

  • 5 of 5

We had a great experience at the cabin. All the beds were comfortable and even the couch made a nice bed as well. The kitchen had everything we needed including all the little essential things like paper products, soap, trash bags, and spices which was nice to not have to worry about. I don't think I ever said "I wish I had this right now." Everything was decorated very nice too. The hot tub was in good working order and was maintained well and clean. The fire pit was great and wish we could have used it more. The internet and smart tvs were great so my kids had several options in entertainment. Overall the house is great for the price. One thing of note...I was expecting more mountainous views as comparable to Gatlinburg, TN but unfortunately this location did not have those views available. There are a couple of waterfalls nearby though that makeup for the lack of views. We also were able to get a little rafting trip in on the Ocoee River. Overall we had a spectacular time and it was nice to have a dependable place to stay.

Cozy

  • 4 of 5

Bud and Sandy provided written directions to the cabin as they realized GPS does not understand the cabin's address. This was very helpful.

The cabin is cozy, clean and well appointed as pictured. It was not as spacious as we expected from the pictures, but definitely had all amenities listed. We had four of us staying in the cabin with 2 medium/small dogs. We were comfortable in the space. Our children are now young adults, so the interior stairs were not a problem. Our dogs, however, were very cautious about them and there would be safety concerns for very small children/toddlers. I would recommend a gate/barrier. The stairs are a bit steep and The set going to the lower level have open risers. The cabin does have wifi, but it did have difficulty staying connected which may cause frustration if you have to bring work (or homework) with you.

In general, you are at least 30-45 min. away from major attractions and stores that have gas, full line groceries, etc. The closest local restaurant is Taccoa Riverside Restaurant at about 20 min away. The location is lovely on the river, but we did not particularly enjoy the food.

We did take a couple of day trips to hike and we visited Mercier Orchards, which we enjoyed.

Overall, the cabin is quite comfortable and we enjoyed the downtime in staying there!

Owner's Response: Hello Lynn, We are happy you enjoyed your "downtime" and were comfortable while staying at Black Oaks Lodge. Our cabin is 2154 sf with an additional 1000 sf of outdoor living. Plenty of room for a family of 6 to enjoy. Small children should always be supervised whether it's the stairs, loft, or firepit. We did check out our WiFi connectivity and discovered that there is a connection problem with our internet service but not with the WiFi. When it rains it has been getting into the wire/cable connection(s). This will be brought to the attention of our provider and repaired. We are sorry you did not discover Van's Riverwalk cafe just 1.5 miles from the cabin and the Toccoa restaurant is just 6 miles from the cabin. It takes us, going at or below the speed limit just 11 minutes to get there. Merciers is certainly a treasure and we would always recommend a visit.
