Owner built on the bluff overlooking Kachemak Bay.
This 6 acre property has a large lawn leading down to the 300 ft bluff where you can pick a salad from the 30 x 72 foot greenhouse. A trail leads through birch, alder, and spruce along the small creek to the bluff where you can smell the sea, watch ravens, eagles, and gulls soar at eye level and view rafts of otters floating beyond the beach.
Close to town, this custom owner built home will appeal to those who appreciate something special. Window sills and stair rails were hand milled from local cottonwood and there are many other special touches not ordinarily seen in a vacation rental. Visitors will enjoy a very clean, comfortable and private setting.
There is a new 12 inch Queen 'sleep innovations' bed in the bedroom with custom dressers. A fold out queen futon in the living room can accommodate 2 other guests. The owner lives in a separate home 100 feet away and will be available to answer questions, perhaps facilitate your way across the bay, and help make your stay in Homer as enjoyable as possible.

About Steve Hughes
I first came to Alaska in 1976, In 1977 I began a journey around the world that lasted four and half years. In 1982 I settled back into Alaska in earnest. I built a cabin across Kachemak Bay, then began building our home on the Homer Bluff in 1995. Everything on our property is custom built, including your lodging. The timber frame portion of our house is made from beetle-killed spruce off this land. I have worked in mineral exploration, carpentry, fishing, as a teacher, and presently as an RN in our local hospital in the Emergency Department. I met my wife, Robbie, the green thumb of the family, in our hospital in 1989. Our daughter, Hailey is in college. We love to travel and meet people from different places and cultures which is the primary inspiration for having a vacation rental. I think we live in one of the most beautiful places in the world and it is good energy and a great pleasure to share this with others.
Why Steve Hughes chose Homer
We are fortunate to live in an area of such sublime natural beauty. To see each day's unique texture and color of the sea or a simple walk to sit near the bluff and watch the dalliance of Eagles fills the senses and affirms how grand it is to be alive.
What makes this Apartment unique
Gardens for the eyes and stomach to feast upon. Trails to explore on the property. A peaceful, uncrowded setting. Sidewalk a mile up to Ocean Overlook Park or 2 miles down into town. Great Bird Viewing off the Bluff framed by the Kenai Mountains and Homer Spit. Plenty of room for your boat if you're down trolling for Kings or fishing for Halibut.

Great views from Homer!
The reviews were spot-on! You will love this location, the views and the owner! We enjoyed the convenience of Homer, only 2 miles away. We sat in the sunshine on our deck watching whales, boats and snow-capped mountains. A VERY relaxing site for your vacation. The property was very clean, and fun to roam around since it is large with several buildings. Steve and Robbie are a pleasure to meet and they were a treasure trove of "off the beaten path" ideas. I nighly recommend this property.
Best. Place. Ever.
Exceptional in every respect. Perfect for a couple of folks with maybe one child. But the view! The property! Good folks! Can't be beat. Best VRBO stay ever and I've rented from the Keys to Moose Pass AK!
Our stay with the Hughes family in Homer was a great experience. The views from the property are superb. The rental is very comfortable and has literally everything you could possibly need. The family is very hospitable and the green house on the property is a paradise, of which they share the bounty with their guests. The location is very convenient, close to town and the spit (less than 10 minute drive). Thank you for a wonderful 5 days in Homer!
Neat, clean, private, quiet. Super convenient to Homer! Absolutely loved sharing in the garden veggies and berries, what a treat. Thanks for everything!
Not to close and not to far from the action of Homer. Perfect in so many ways.
My wife and I just spent three nights at Steve and Robbie's little compound situated just back from the high bluffs a few miles out of downtown Homer. It sits half a mile off the highway just past a horse pasture which just about guarantees perfect solitude.
This panoramic apartment sits high above Steve's workshop with a very large deck offering great views of the bay and snow covered mountains beyond. Even in summer.
The weather cooperated every night enabling us to dine outside on the balcony after cooking local fare in the fully equipped kitchen. Nothing like having fresh baked halibit accompanied with salad from Steve and Robbie's garden/greenhouse in the warm late evening sunshine that lasts until nearly 11pm this time of year.
And if you're not one to cook you may very well enjoy evening drinks from Steve's special observation hut that's right at the top of the bluffs. We observed both whales and sea otters from here not to mention many of Homer's fishing boat that were coming and going.
It certainly was the life while it lasted. The only problem was it ended too soon! You won't go wrong coming here. I just hope there's an opening the next time my wife and I return to this part of the world. Thanks Steve and Robbie 😎.
Great place to stay, very hospitable owners! Very clean, quiet & comfortable, has everything you need. Beautiful view & close to town. Loved the veges & fruit out of the greenhouse & gardens. Would definitely come stay again.
Homer has many attractions to entertain visitors with varying interests. Although there is more going on in the summer, winter provides good opportunities also. Our new modern library aimed at Grewink glacier is a welcome place to explore or sit around the fireplace with a good book. The Oceans and Islands Visitor Center offers exhibits and live bird viewing cams with trails leading down to the slough and Bishops Beach. The Pratt museum has outdoor and indoor exhibits that showcase local history. There is a fantastic network of cross country ski trails and a rope tow for downhill skiing and tube sledding at Olson Mountain. Trolling for Winter Kings has become increasingly popular. In summer, Pier One on the spit offers local theater. The annual shorebird Festival occurs every spring and the Wooden Boat Festival happens in the fall. Across the bay is the 400,000 acre Kachemak Bay State Wilderness Park which is accessible by boat taxi for those who enjoy hiking among mountains, rivers, lakes, and glaciers. Seldovia and the artist community of Halibut Cove are also easily accessible by boat, ferry, or plane. Although the Homer Harbor is primarily home to a local fishing fleet there are also many excellent charter operations for bird and sea creature viewing as well as Halibut and Salmon fishing.
