Cook in the chef’s kitchen with Wolf six-burner gas range, perfect for group meals. Enjoy summer and fall activities like boating, fishing, kayaking, and paddleboarding, plus nearby biking trails—all steps from your door. Ideal for family reunions, corporate retreats, or getaways with friends, this spot delivers peaceful escapes in nature. Located in a time capsule where the historic Judd’s Resort began. History of Judd’s Resort: Nestled on the western shores of Lake Winnibigoshish (affectionately known as “Big Winnie”) near Bena, Minnesota, Judd’s Resort was a beloved family-run fishing haven that captured the essence of north woods escapism for decades. Founded in the late 1940s by visionary entrepreneur Judson (J.B.) Daniels, his wife Leota Daniels, and their daughters Nancy, Judeen, and Susan, the resort was named after Judson himself and quickly became a premier destination for anglers and nature lovers. The Daniels family poured their passion into building a modern oasis amid the pristine wilderness, emphasizing connection with nature and the restorative powers of the surrounding forests and waters. By the mid-20th century, Judd’s Resort boasted impressive amenities for its time: 17 strictly modern housekeeping cabins, a new lodge offering meals and rooms, and three large cruisers dedicated to guided fishing parties on the lake’s abundant waters, teeming with pike, walleye, and perch. It proudly advertised itself as “the only all modern resort on Lake Winnibigoshish,” with the catchy slogan “Where the Wild Ducks Fly and the Big Pike Lie.” Proprietors included Mr. and Mrs. J.B. Daniels alongside Mr.(Elvin) and Mrs.(Nancy)Heller—with daughters Judeen(Donald)Soper and Susan(Larry)Chvala —highlighting its close-knit, multi-generational operation. The 1950s marked a vibrant era, with historical photos capturing boats docked at the resort in 1956, including a notable 32-foot Chris-Craft launch. Visitors in the 1960s and 1970s recall passing the resort en route to nearby cabins, evoking fond memories of family vacations and the lake’s timeless allure. Yet, its legacy endures through stories of healing north woods adventures and the Daniels family’s pioneering spirit.
