THE HISTORY: SLEEP IN A PEICE OF COLORADO'S LEGACY

Built in 1873, this house was the private home of Peter MacFarlane, one of Central City’s earliest entrepreneurs. MacFarlane & Co helped construct many of the buildings you still see in town today, including the famous Central City Opera House.

When the gold rush faded, MacFarlane personally bought the Opera House to save it from demolition. A generation later, his heirs donated the masterpiece back to the community, establishing the world-renowned Central City Opera Association that thrives today. Staying here isn't just booking a room—it’s stepping into the living heritage of the American West!

LOCATION & NEARBY MOUNTAIN ADVENTURES

• Casinos & Nightlife: Central City and Black Hawk casinos are just a 2-minute drive or shuttle ride away.

• Mighty Argo Cable Car (Idaho Springs): Take a scenic 10-minute gondola ride up Virginia Canyon Mountain Park for incredible views of Mount Blue Sky, epic hiking, and world-class mountain biking.

OTHER THINGS TO NOTE

Colorado mountain communities are sensitive to fire risk. Please note that certain amenities or activities may be unavailable during elevated fire bans, including open-flame fire pits or outdoor smoking. The gas grill is always allowed.

Colorado mountain communities occasionally experience power outages, but they're usually no more than a couple hours and we get notified immediately, and will keep you updated about restoration times. The door lock and smoke alarms will still work. We'll notify you ahead of time if Xcel plans any of their "public safety outages" during your stay.

This house has shallow stairs and some uneven walkways. Those with mobility needs should ask us specific questions in advance.

Our no-chores, no-cleaning fees, no-nickel and diming policy is a social agreement. Please respect the home and let us know if something breaks so we can fix or replace it.

Dogs yes, Cats no (sorry we're allergic). Iguanas ... maybe?

Small events or gatherings are allowed with prior approval. A cleaning fee does apply to these as there's more work to clean up.

Content creation is permitted. We'd love to see what you create.

After booking, we'll ask you to review and agree to a rental agreement and will ask for a photo of your ID. This ensures you are you and that we're checking off all the compliance things we need to do. This also enables your stay for $1,500 worth of accidental damage coverage at no cost to you! It only takes a couple minutes and there's no app to install. Once this is completed, we'll share your door code the day before arrival. Long-term stays (more than 28 days) require a lease agreement & background checks.
Our prices include all fees. No hidden fees.

We're Jeof & Cassidy, and we're excited to welcome you to our home in Central City, Colorado. Jeof grew up as a nomad, having lived in many different places and after a long career in technology today works as a travel advisor and owns Outward Travel. Cassidy is an IT professional who supports small businesses all along the front range. We've made our home in Central City and are excited for you to experience this fantastic little town rich with nature, history, and fun things to do!

Why they chose this property

We love historical Central City, where we locals are always up to something since 1859. Living on Eureka Street puts us close to the action but away from the noise. And being within walking distance of the Opera and a 5 minute drive to the casinos, it's a wonderful place to live and play.

What makes this property unique

We're the most renter-friendly vacation rental in Colorado: No Cleaning Fee, No Chores List, Family-Ready, Dog-Friendly, Cannabis-Friendly, EV Charger, 5-Star Amenities, a Huge Private Parking Lot, and the most laid back hosts you'll ever stay with.

Beyond the incredible hospitality we offer, over and above what most short-term rentals provide, our home is also a critical part of Central City's history.

Peter MacFarlane is the man who basically built Central City with his bare hands. He came here to make his fortune in America's Great West, and spent more than 50 years as an entrepreneur building and equipping homes, churches, storefronts, and especially the mills that helped extract tens of millions of dollars worth of gold from Gilpin County. Without Peter, Central City may have never been the Richest Square Mile on Earth.

It was also Peter MacFarlane that helped save the world-famous Central City Opera House. The county was going to turn it into a government building and the citizens hated that idea. Peter ultimately bought up all of the shares to keep it as a world-class arts and entertainment facility. After his death, his son and daughter-in-law donated the Opera House to the University of Denver and founded the Central City Opera Association, and since 1932 the CCOA has become a world-famous cultural institution.

Central City's downtown is lined with beatiful historical homes, most of which are owned by History Colorado or the Central City Opera and are primarily used for artist housing in the summer. The Peter MacFarlane Home has been privately preserved for more than 150 years, and as its latest stewards we are proud to open this home to guests. When you sleep under its roof, you're sleeping in the same space as the man who built Central City.
