This Historic 1924 beach bungalow was the home of Belle Jennings Benchley (August 8, 1882 – December 17, 1972), known as “The Zoo Lady,” and was the director of the San Diego Zoo from 1927 to 1953, guiding its expansion from a small collection of animals to an innovative world-class zoo.
The home has been remodeled with new kitchen and bathrooms, refinished white oak floors and comfortable beds. The house is located on the beachfront known as 'Dog Beach' your pet will be in heaven on this leash-free dog-friendly beach. Just a short walk to the West and you are on the people-only beach with surfing, boogey boarding, swimming, body surfing, and all the usual beach activities.
Walking distance to the famous OB pier (the longest concrete pier on the West Coast) and the main business district of Ocean Beach – Newport Avenue. On Newport you will find restaurants (ask about our favorites), antique stores, coffee houses, bars, bike and surf shops. On Wednesday evenings Newport Avenue features a Farmer’s Market where you can find local fruits, vegetables and flowers, street performances and food vendors.
The bicycle path just in the back of the house takes you up and down the coast - bicycles are located on the property for your use, as are games and beach toys.
If you are looking for activities on your vacation, Ocean Beach is Conveniently located within 15 minutes of major attractions including the World Famous San Diego Zoo, Balboa Park, Museums, Old Town, Sea World, Kayaking, Petco Park, Qualcomm Stadium, La Jolla Cove, hiking, surfing,golfing, boating and miles of sandy beaches.
