About Barney Gibbs
Father and Son, Chris and Barney Gibbs are born and bred-Barbadians. Saba and Barbados have shared seafaring traditions since the 17th century, and the flat, limestone island to the South is a vastly different landscape to Saba's volcanic peaks. But both islands are home to Chris and Barney.
Barney Gibbs purchased this Villa in 2009
Why Barney Gibbs chose Windward Side
Purchased as a virtual ruin in 2009, the Barbadian owners of Spyglass Villa have meticulously renovated the property as a refuge for all who choose to stay here. Through careful study of the unique Saban vernacular in its over 100 year old cottages, we have not departed from the well-crafted and intricate details of Saban architecture, while also maintaining a contemporary, but comfortable feel in the property. Saba is a quiet and charming island surrounded by spectacular sea and mountain views and each space in the home was designed to ensure that visitors enjoy peaceful respite from the hustle and bustle of the outside world. ‘Spyglass’ is the current name given to the property which was formerly constructed and occupied by well-known Saban Calvin Holm. After a few visits to the island the current owners decided to undertake a renovation of the property to make the house befitting of the beautiful, almost 360 degree views of the sea and mountain.

VRBO Bear Stay review
My family thoroughly enjoyed the stay at Spyglass. The property is breathtaking. I felt entitled every day. I was continually walking around to take it all in. It's about 1500 feet down to the the sea with no other properties between you and the water. Its also super quiet. I did not hear other people. Mostly you will hear wind, goats, and birds. The property has been built to exacting standards and was carefully planned from the many books on island homes. I cannot imagine how much it cost to build; certainly a labor of love. The retaining walls are hand cut stone, as are parts of the home. The interior is equally impressive with a wonderful kitchen with 4 seat table, small living room with couch and Dish TV. There are two bedrooms upstairs with queen beds, a master bath attached to one bedroom and one other large bathroom. Below is a small bedroom with a twin bed, a built in desk, and very nice bathroom. My 16-year-old daughter stayed in it, while my son stayed in the other queen upstairs. The water is potable. There is a washer and dryer. The house is not air-conditioned, but that did not affect us despite being people that like it cool for sleeping. There was a steady wind of 10-15 MPH with gusts at times to 25 or more; I hear there's more wind in December when we visited than other times of year. The house is designed to allow air through with shutters all over the place. We tended to spend the good weather days outside, either on the deck shown in the pictures or down below. This is a great place to go for family togetherness. We read, talked, and cooked together. The kids still had internet access to watch Netflix or YouTube. We had a couple days where there was either constant rain or we were in the clouds, but still enjoyed the family time. We walked into Windwardside on good weather days to shop or eat at one of several restaurants, and to buy pastry items. That walk is intense enough to make up for not exercising otherwise due to a fairly steep hill. Taxi service is available and not expensive. For being a relatively remote island with presumably high cost to transport food, I did not find the grocery prices outrageous. Perhaps less expensive than Hawaii and much better selection and quality than we found in Belize. Most everything you need you can get at the grocery store, and they will even give you a ride back to the property since the manager of Spyglass owns the grocery and other businesses. Awesome!
Spyglass was the perfect home away from it all! The location is seriously the best on the island. The house is clean, stylish, comfortable and convenient. Photos can’t do the views justice. We highly highly recommend staying at Spyglass for an opportunity to totally unplug and relax.
The property is fantastic and the view is the best I’ve ever had bar none!
Spyglass villa is an amazing place; built to extremely high standards and well thought out. Everything you touch reeks of quality and durability. It has a very open feel and light and wind come in from all directions. It has a kind of luxury but off the grid vibe and as such has no A/C. You won’t miss it though as the house can be opened up as much as you like to take advantage of the cool bug free Saban nights with a constant breeze flowing through your bedroom. It gets cool enough to need a light jacket at night.
But what really makes this villa is the incredible views. You can’t look in any direction and not have a feast for the eyes! From the side entrance looking back you see booby hill and sweeping left you see all the way up Mt. Scenery and the St. John’s and then an endless ocean view that doesn’t stop till all the way around to the back of the house for something like 250 degrees of water....it’s crazy. You have a clear view of St Eustatius and beyond but can still hear the waves crashing onto the rocks over one thousand feet down.
The house is close to Windwardside and a great place to base from for a stay on Saba. I can’t say enough about it. My wife and I have stayed in many nice places and Spyglass definitely ranks at the top. I would highly recommend it to anyone looking to make their stay extra special in the already extra special place that Saba is!
The best holiday of our lives!
My husband, myself and our 7-year old son had an incredible time at the Spyglass house. Our experience on this island topped our expectations. We thank Mark, our house manager, and the cleaning staff for making our stay unforgettable. We really got to connect as a family by going hiking and snorkeling everyday! Thank you and hope to see you soon!
Gracious & comfortable with a one of a kind view
This is a very beautiful property, very private at the end of the road. The view can not be underestimated , the interior is well appointed with travertine floors and baths. The kitchen is very roomy and an easy place to create a feast. Sitting above the village of Windwardside, it is an easy stroll into town or up to the "Level" to purchase great fresh vegetables and talk with the neighbors. Spyglass will seduce you.
Perfect Relaxing Private and Peaceful..
Everything I expected and more....Saba is special and Spyglass enhances the overall experience to visit such a wonderful island. I will be back soon!
Spyglass Villa is the perfect retreat after a day of diving the must-see pinnacles in the Marine Park that encircle the island. Sea Saba in Windwardside would love to arrange your dives in Saba. For those who are enthusiastic about walking/ hiking, Spylgass is situated near to various trailheads near Windwardside, including the hike up to beautiful Mt. Scenery. Visit the Saba Conservation Foundation Trail Shop in Windwardside for more information.
Dining out could not be more easy in Windwardside which has a variety of restaurants at price points to suit every taste for every time of the day.
For those who want to spice things up in the kitchen themselves, Windwardside has two supermarkets to stock up your pantry.
But most of all, Spyglass is to be enjoyed by those who are looking for a little peace and quiet. Read a book. Listen to the waves in the distance and watch the Frigate Birds (Boobys) sail the air currents. They are just as free as you will be once you arrive at Spyglass...
