About Donald McDevitt or Al Torrence

We are a married couple in Chicago. Al is a physician and Don is a psychoanalyst. We both have two adult children that love using the condo when they can take vacation.

Donald McDevitt or Al Torrence purchased this condo in 2013

Why Donald McDevitt or Al Torrence chose Colonia 5 de Diciembre

We loved the neighborhood. Close to all the activities in the Romantic Zone but away from the noise. We felt like we were in Mexico and welcomed by our neighbors. We are close to the art district and one of the finest restaurants in PV, Cafe des Artistes. We are also close to the farmers and fish market. You will feel like you are in Mexico.

What makes this condo unique

Mexican neighborhood. Safe community. Accessible to everything in the city. Beautiful living space. Quiet. Helpful staff.

Spectacular condo with great amenities

  • 5 of 5

This is our third, 3 month winter stay in this gorgeous condo. We delayed adding our review to the ones below to keep it for ourselves. The pictures on the site are 100% accurate but nothing can describe the fantastic view of the bay and city from this unit and the cooling breezes that sweep through it; they have to be experienced. Puerto Vallarta is a vibrant city and you will have a bird's eye view of all that it has to offer; cruise ships coming and going, fireworks, sky divers, whales, parades, athletic events at the stadium and track; the list goes on and on. All that and a 15 minute walk along the Malecon into the heart and charm of Zona Romantica. Of course it sits high up on the hill but cabs are plentiful and reasonably priced if you don't want to walk it. There is a large grocery store a 5 minute walk away, a Mexican vegetable and fish market up behind and PV boasts 2 large Wal-Marts, a Mega store, Costco and two large Malls to name but a few. It also has a large expat and snowbird population and great live theater, music and food. There is not much more that I can say about the condo that hasn't been said in the previous reviews. The responsiveness of the owners and their top notch property management team (Carlos and Fernando) are second to none. There is a weekly maid service and Alle does an impressive job. Our only regret is that family circumstances preclude us from returning next winter. If you want to experience authentic Mexico with all the comforts and conveniences of home; this gated, secure and impeccably maintained complex can't be beat. Thanks Don and Al for everything.. we will miss Casa Girasol next year.

Fantastic condo just north of downtown

  • 5 of 5

This lovely flat could easily accommodate two couples; it has two spacious, comfortable bedrooms, each with its own nice bath, comfortable king sized beds, and good separation of space for privacy.

Staying here was like being in a luxury resort. The light-filled, breezy condo was aesthetically decorated with high-end, high quality furniture and fittings, lovely finishes in stone and wood, and nice art, glass and ceramic pieces. The well-equipped kitchen included a complete set of pots and pans, sharp knives, and plenty of china and glassware. The fantastic balcony—furnished with comfortable armchairs and dining table—offers sweeping, unobstructed views of the town and the bay. Both the flat and the balcony are completely private (not overlooked by neighbors).

In the hills at the edge of town, the flat is in a friendly, fairly quiet neighborhood, though not lacking in the occasional barking dog. With the balcony doors closed and the air conditioning on, the master bedroom was very quiet for sleeping. Blackout curtains and a firm, comfortable bed also made for a good night’s sleep. (With no blackout curtains and a very bright light in the outside corridor, the second bedroom was brighter.)

The pool at the condo complex is small and was quite cold when we were there, but the jacuzzi was cool and refreshing. A few blocks downhill is a large supermarket as well as a number of restaurants. (Bring good walking shoes for the cobbled streets and the sweaty walk back uphill!) Recommended by the owners, we loved Barracuda restaurant on the beach.

The Botanical Garden south of town is a must-see, with lovely manicured sections, short walks through wilder areas, and a fantastic open-air restaurant that offers delicious handmade tortillas, friendly service, and a chance to see many native colorful birds.

Treat yourself and go to Cafe des Artistes, an easy walk from the condo and considered one of the best restaurants in Mexico. The early-bird menu allows you to experience their incredible food at a somewhat lower price point. We had two meals there; with cocktails, the bill for two was $60-75 both times—very good value for the quality. The north end of Puerto Vallarta’s lovely Malecon is about a 15 minute walk from the flat; evening strolls there were one of the highlights of our days. Also recommended, and also within walking distance: the fine art pottery from Mata Ortiz on display at the Galeria de Olas in the Centro.

Great condo with million dollar view in 5 de Diciembre

  • 5 of 5

Great views and beautiful 2BR 2BR condo in central location. Fernando the property manager met me upon arrival and showed me the ropes. He was very attentive the entire time and quick to respond to any questions. Condo is beautifully furnished, thanks to the impeccable taste of owners Al and Don. The building is a fairly recent construction with high end appliances including individual washer and dryer. Large balcony accessible from living room or master bedroom. Within walking distance of beach and Malecon although the last two blocks traverse a fairly steep hill. Nice neighborhood with a mixture of expatriates and locals.

Perfect Experience

  • 5 of 5

My fiance and I had the best time exploring Puerto Vallarta from Al and Don's condo. It is perfectly located in the heart of the city so there is easy access to everything. The touristy area is around a 15 minute walk along the beach if you want to do that. If you like a little adventure and want to see the local culture, there are tons of amazing restaurants right down the hill. Al and Don were great about listing some of the better ones in a binder they put together. There is a grocery store close by too. The kitchen in the condo is high quality and well stocked. If you are up to it, buy some eggs, salsa, and fresh tortillas from the back of the store and make your own huevos rancheros for breakfast. Amazing. The view from the balcony is incredible. We saw some of the most beautiful sunsets we've ever seen in our lives. There is a less crowded beach at the bottom of the hill. As you walk south you will find more people and more restaurants with drink service on the beach. La Palapa, one of Al and Don's recommendations, is perfect for this. After a long day at the beach, the pool/hot tub at the condo is a great place to come back to for a little more relaxation.

Overall, the condo is very comfortable, clean, nicely furnished and well maintained. Fernando, Carlos (the two site managers), Al and Don were all super helpful in making sure we had the best experience while we were there. We had an amazing time. I couldn't recommend a better place. We will definitely be back again within the year.

Romantic Trip... Everything we could have asked for and MORE!

  • 5 of 5

My long-time girlfriend and I traveled to Mexico to celebrate each of our graduations from graduate programs. We went for a week and stayed at this beautiful condo in Old Town PV. The pictures included of the condo are beautiful, but they do not do the property justice -- It's far more breath taking in person! When we arrived Fernando (one of the managers) met us on site, and he showed us around the property and recommended some local hidden gems). Although we didn't really need the management team, both members were easy to contact by text/call. During our stay a very kind woman came to clean the condo and did the laundry for us (sheets/towels), which was very helpful! The owners were also very helpful both before and during our trip. They provided a helpful binder of recommended restaurants, tours, the WIFI password, and other important tips. We particularly appreciated the internet phone (dials in Mexico and to USA with no added charge!). We also took advantage of the in-house washer/dryer to be able to pack lightly (such an added bonus!). Their recommended restaurants were also PERFECT. We had tremendous meals every day, and their listed restaurants were incredible. To name a few: we loved Barracuda, La Palapa, Cafe de Artistes, and Pan y Que. We would highly recommend traveling to PV and staying in this Old Town Condo - Such a beautiful, convenient, and private location. The condo is a quick walk to the beach, and a lovely scenic walk (quick cab ride) to all other destinations throughout PV. We particularly loved being in the heart of downtown PV - It was charming, energetic, and beautiful. We loved the condo so much, we have already contacted the owners about coming back in the next year.

Thank you Donald and Al for coming to our rescuse!

This condo has thee most amazing view and is beautiful! We called about it after finding out that the place we had booked was not going to work for us and these owners went out of their way to make our stay wonderful! They provided us with phone numbers of taxi cab drivers( that speak English), directions in Spanish to their place, Carlos's phone number who could help you with about anything, grocery store locations, restaurants that were superb to eat at, and everything went off with out a hitch even with short notice of the booking. Really enjoyed the internet phone line to stay in touch with business and family back home. Planning on coming back! Why yes, we live in Iowa with snow! Mark, Debbie, Kerry and Mary
