About Bob and Pam Hankins

Little Cabin in the Woods is the result of two couples dreaming of the ideal get-away. Rod and Anita, both educators, and Bob and Pam, a lawyer and an educator, are long-time friends who dreamed of owning a cabin as a home-away-from-home. Now retired, we enjoy traveling, grandchildren, the St. Louis Cardinals, corgis, and spending extended periods of time at the cabin.

Bob and Pam Hankins purchased this cabin in 2007

Why Bob and Pam Hankins chose Arkansas

Little Cabin in the Woods was not purchased---it was designed and built by the owners! With the assistance of a Mennonite father-son team, the cabin took form over two years of persistence and hard work. Our 'fingerprints' are all over the cabin. We painted and hung the cabinets, laid the hickory hardwood floor, made and hung the curtains, and decorated.

Little Cabin in the Woods is a labor of love for us. It provides a get-away and a place of solitude that is unmatched in one of the most beautiful best-kept secrets in the US----Newton County, Arkansas.

What makes this cabin unique

We created the ambiances you will enjoy! The cathedral-like windows that stream the outdoors in, the wrap-around deck, the jacuzzi tub, the handcrafted cedar bedstead, the photos, the stain-glass window in the front door are among the unique features of the cabin.

Little Cabin in the Woods is remote enough to give you the feeling of solitude yet close enough to Jasper to allow you to run into the grocery story to pick up that forgotten item.

I loved the cabin and would recommend it to anyone.

While the road was a little rough, the cabin was excellent. We had two mid size trucks and were able to park easily. The porch and deck were great areas to relax. I loved the aromatic cedar but the smell was a little strong (at first) for some of the others in our group. We had plenty of space for 4 adults and 4 kids. The loft's king sized bed was really comfortable. Having 3 full bathrooms was great. There were plenty of supplies. The hosts were easy to work with and got us in, even with our last minute reservation. I really appreciated the extra check-in information that was sent and the informational binders in the cabin. The only negatives were the Jacuzzi tub not sealing, even after following the directions. It seemed to seal but the tub would not fill completely and the water leaked out. Black wood ants were bad in the kitchen/ dining area and loft bathroom. We couldn't find cookie sheets so we bought some and "gifted" them. It would have been nice for the thermostat to have been adjusted before arrival, as it took a while for the cabin to cool off. All those were minor things though and didn't keep us from enjoying the cabin. The sunrise view from the deck was beautiful and we saw several deer in the driveway.

Owner's Response: Thanks for your review. We are pleased you enjoyed the cabin. We appreciate your note and will check and correct the issues you identified. Also, thank you for understanding that we do not want to waste energy with a low air temp until guests arrive. We sometimes have days or weeks between guests, and do want to do our part to conserve our earth's resources when possible. And, yes, the sunrises there are amazing! Thanks again. Beautiful setting

  • 4 of 5

Very nice cabin, tastefully decorated in a lodge type theme. Nice big bathrooms, well equipped kitchen. The basement bedroom is a little bit creepy, probably because it's dark down there. The view from the deck is probably amazing in the winter when there's no leaves on the trees. That would be my only complaint.... maybe clear a few trees so you can take in the breathtaking view! Overall though I would definitely recommend it! Close to charming little Jasper and close to several river outfitters. Also great hiking in close proximity. Grocery store only a few miles away.

Owner's Response: Thank you for your review. We appreciate your thoughts and agree the location is convenient. We are pleased that you enjoyed the spacious rooms and well-equipped kitchen. We will review the lighting in the basement. Unfortunately, a couple of the trees are not on our property; even so, we think the view is amazing whether "leaf on" or "leaf off." Thanks again for staying with us. Rod and Anita Bob and Pam

awesome family cabin

  • 5 of 5

My family, six adults and 1 child, stayed here for a week. The cabin is more beautiful in person then pictures show! It is so roomy, yet cozy and charming. The view off the porch is lovely. The downstairs bedroom, not pictured, is just as nice as the other two. It is the most well stocked house we ever rented from VRBO - had everything we needed and then some. It is centrally located just about 5 minutes to the town of Jasper. We loved Jasper!! Emma's Junk museum was a fun stop for all of us. Emma recommended the Lost Valley Trail and it was our favorite hike of the week. Low Gap Cafe was also great. We definitely would love to stay here again!

Little Cabin in the Woods is located within miles of the first designated national river, the Buffalo National River. With multiple 'put-ins,' the river offers leisurely canoeing, off-river exploration of historical sites, hiking, and horse-back riding. The road 'up the mountain' (74 West) is a beautiful scenic drive. Don't miss dining at the Low Gap Cafe for unbelievable cuisine! Highway 7 South also provides a lovely scenic drive. Stop at the Arkansas Grand Canyon for a breath-taking view. While at the Arkansas Grand Canyon, enjoy lunch or dinner at Cliff House Inn.

Be sure to make a visit to the Ponca area part of your trip! Ponca is approximately 12 miles west on Highway 74. (Turn right onto 74) View elk from the comfort of your vehicle. (Elk were re-introduced to Arkansas recently and are thriving. Elk can be viewed by turning left onto Highway 43 and driving a short distance. Additionally, enjoy the historical 100-year-old Boxley Baptist Church which still holds services, the historical farmstead, and the Elk museum in Ponca. Jasper, the county seat for Newton County, has its own delights. The Ozark Cafe is a time-honored tradition that serves down-home cooking to visitors and locals. Antiquing at Emma's Museum of Junk is a treat not to miss. The Chamber of Commerce offers hand-crafted items from local craftsmen as well as information about the area. Want to float the Buffalo? Several concessionaires offer canoe rentals, drop-off and and pick-up services.

Of course, Branson and all its entertainment venues is just one hour away from the cabin.
