Fall Rhapsody or Thanksgiving
About Donald LeBlanc
59 years old, born and raised in Ottawa. I have 5 kids, mostly grown up, two in university now. I am an Engineer working with National Research Council Canada for the last 17 years. I consider myself a handyman and do most of my own repair and upgrade work myself. I live in Ottawa, about 1.5 hours from my cottage.
Donald LeBlanc purchased this Cottage in 2004
Why Donald LeBlanc chose Les Collines-de-l'Outaouais Regional County Municipality
Good location for a large family get together. Shallow water and beach for kids. 5 bedrooms lets couples have their own spaces. Modern kitchen and screened in porch allows for the comforts of home while in the country setting. The lakes on the Quebec side are just beautiful with the hilly terrain. Its far enough from the city that you can actually see the stars and the milky way on a clear night. Clean air and very little light pollution.
What makes this Cottage unique
I bought the place for the bedrooms, as I have a large family myself. But the thing that makes it great we find is the screened in porch. It makes such a difference not having to battle with blackflies, mosquitoes, wasps, and flys at dinner time. Overlooking the lake at lunch or dinner, and even having a coffee at breakfast when the lake is mirror smooth is such a wonderful experience.

The cottage was well kept and as presented, It was a great place to get away for the weekend.
Coming into the slow season it was good to have a group that followed my main rule which is to leave the place in the same shape you find it. I can now move on to a few repairs like my sink and painting the deck. Hope to see you all again soon. Thanks guys.
Great stay, awesome location
We had a great weekend staying at this very spacious cottage. The pool table was a very fun extra. The cottage is located right on the lake Sinclair witch was great for our fishing weekend. The fishing was awesome, we must of caught 200+ bass over our 3 days. We did catch a few pikes but didnt hook into any monsters. The neighbour has a boat launch witch was easy to use and right beside the cottage. The water is a little mucky, especially on the right side of the dock. He has a very big dock, easy for us to tie both our boat to it. Huge table upstairs, fun for everyone to eat together and play cards in the evening. Two fridges, plenty of room for all your food. Upstairs sink wasnt draining, so that caused us some issues but we did know about it coming in. Donald was very nice and easy to talk to. He answered all of our questions quickly, even returned my charger that I had forgotten. Thank you Donald.
Great bunch of guys, left my place very nice and clean after the rental. The sink is an issue I will be dealing with this fall as it would be very disruptive to sort out right now.
For the future, I have just found out the municipality has a brand new bylaw preventing people from using their own boats, so in future that will be a problem. I might look into getting a motorized boat myself in that case, but early days for that. Will keep you posted. Glad to hear you had enough room for food. Something I intend to expand on a bit.
Happy to have been able to return the lost charger. I know from my own travels that sort of thing is just frustrating.
I look forward to seeing you folks up there in the winter sometime with the kids in tow for a little tobogganing on the hill down to the lake.
We were scheduled to stay here for 3 days and nights. We were totally unimpressed when we arrived and told the owner we would be leaving. By morning we were gone. We know what to expect in a cottage but this was ridiculously sub-par. The front yard has junk such as cinderblocks and spare BBQs in it and a rusting minivan. The deck is a peeling mess and is missing any sort of railing which is necessary as it is over 2 feet high. It's surrounded by raspberry bushes growing through the deck and making it hard to see any hazards. Our dog fell off the deck within the first hour. Not safe for kids either. On entering we were Immediately assailed by the smell of some sort of chemical masking an underlying foul odour. The first thing the owner showed us was how to use a plunger to drain the kitchen sink with each use. The first thing we did after he left was clean the sink and counter. The dishwasher was loaded. The stove is ridiculous. The temperature doesn't appear and you can't tell if it is on. It's not clear what the buttons do or if they even work. We were less than impressed by the room in the basement where the water enters the cottage as there is standing water from leaks or condensation and the dampness and must permeates all the couches and beds. There is dirt and mold in the bathroom. There are mousetraps all over. Pillows are old, stained, smelly and ripped. Just as well that we brought our own linen but even then it was an unpleasant and sleepless night. The beach looks OK but under water it is a slimy ooze with debris in it. Two of the kids cut their feet and wouldn't go back in. The paddle boat rudder didn't work properly and wasn't safe to use. We took pictures to support a complaint. First thing next morning we packed up and left after calling the owner to say we were leaving as we said the day before and that we would contact him to explain why. We called him back later and sent him a list of deficiencies and recommendations as well as some of the pictures. He asked for this when we called to request a refund. Instead of a refund he threatened to give us a bad review as renters and to withhold our damage deposit. He claimed that we left the cottage in a bad state and did some sort of damage to his water system and left some feces in his water closet and a bunch of other malarkey to justify keeping the fees. Altogether very embarrassing and a waste of time for us and our friends visiting from out of town.
I have to set the record straight on a few points. I did not threaten a bad review, rather the opposite, I was verbally threatened with a bad review and court action. The crux of the matter is that the renter's overseas guest saw mousetraps and was severely put off and felt they had to leave the next day. I asked if they had left the place in good order and was told they had. Unfortunately this was not the case as when I arrived I found water literally streaming out on the floor and worse. No cleaning had been done at all. Garbage was not taken out, dirty laundry left, cheerios on the floor and the dehumidifier was unplugged. I spent 15 hours cleaning, disinfecting and replaced the leaking water system which is now quite dry. I ask people not to flush wipes or feminine products into a country septic system as my sign states. At this point in time I reverted to withholding the original fees, I had offered a refund under threat, but as I was aware of their dissatisfaction I did return their damage deposit as partial compensation. I too had taken pictures as I expected an unfair review.
To some specifics, I have made some cosmetic changes as I am open to positive suggestions. The sink only became an issue this summer and will be repaired in the fall as it would be too disruptive during anyone's stay. I have met all safety requirements and have gone beyond by providing an AED and first aid kit for my guests. I inspected the boat and it is fine, riding a bit high with only 2 young boys is expected in a craft rated for 4 adults. All I can say about cut feet is that children (and adults) really should be wearing water shoes in any healthy Canadian lake as random sticks and clams will always be present. I have some shoes available for my guests but suggest you bring your own to ensure a good fit.
I did not claim they purposefully damaged my water system, other than jamming the sump pump with wipes etc. I believe this results from a lack of understanding of country plumbing, not malice. My main concern was not being told of the flooding which had the potential to do severe damage if not dealt with immediately. I show every group the water shut off but in this case it was left running. Also of significant concern, the alarm had not been set and windows were left wide open. In a country setting with wildlife, this had the potential to have turned out much worse than it did.
Nice, Spacious Cottage
Really spacious - kind of cluttered though. The kitchen sink did not drain properly which was a bit of an issue. Overall though, we really enjoyed our stay.
Relaxing & unplugged stay
We enjoyed the open kitchen and spacious living space. A big plus is the screened in porch with a beautiful view of the lake.
Pool table in the basement was an added plus. Loved the fire pit down by the lake. The water was crystal clear and we enjoyed kayaking, paddle boating and canoeing . We were disappointed with the extended shallowness of the water and the murky bottom. A few minor adjustments and a little less clutter would go a long way. Overall a wonderful family getaway.
We rent cottages every year and so far this one was our favorite. Donald was very helpful and always reachable. You have everything in the cottage. Paddle boat, canoes, over 15 life jackets, new release DVD collections, multiple board games, a lot of utensils and cutlery. Cottage itself is in a beautiful private area with big lake in the backyard. We caught over 50 big bass fishes in just a week. We will definitely come back. Thank you so much Donald.
