GRANDMAS HOUSE ( with a few twists )

Intimate, eclectic, at times eccentric, romantic and whimsical Upcountry Volcano Village Mountain Cottage.

I treat my guests as I myself would hope to be treated while out in the world traveling.

This is Your vacation and Your special time.

As your host at the cottage I want to make you feel comfortable , well kept and at home while for the most part remaining invisible unless requested.

The cottage is Not a 'pack them in like sardines' rental to produce a maximum rental income.

It has two bedrooms, a large living room, 1 1/2 bathrooms, a wonderful and well equipped kitchen and a private forest deck.

There is room to roam and you won't be stepping over futons, pull out couches or tripping over your luggage or one another.

The entire private cottage space is yours.

The cottage has a maximum capacity for Four guests.

Living in a Native Hawaiian Rain Forest that is located at the 4,000 foot summit elevation of Mt. Kilauea and Halemaumau Crater has its challenges on air quality both inside and out. Volcano is beautiful beyond compare, but you have to work at cleaning / treating the air a bit. You don't need to unduly "Fear" the air terribly, but it is, at any rate a good and sensible thing to consider when visiting Volcano. The cottage is well equipped to keep these assorted elements under control. The active volcano by nature discharges volcanic gasses are called "VOG".

Thankfully most of the time we have our Trade Winds which take much of this to the South and out to sea. The rain forest is by definition, a Wet environment. Moisture, Mold and Mildew can present problems as well. The cottage has Three Levoit Carbon Hepa filters running throughout the cottage. These really all of the mentioned elements from volcanic gas, odors, spores to mold and dust and mildew , etc.

( good article on clean air and treatments: click here )

There are also Two dehumidifiers ( air moisture removal, which also run with air cleaning filters )

One is dedicated solely to the bathroom area. Dehumidifiers are essential in Volcano to keep a constant cottage humidity at a healthy comfortable 50% - 60%. There is a very nice built in heater / Electric Fireplace which is clean, efficient, cozy, charming and easy to operate. The beds are both equipped with heated Sunbeam mattress pads which are wonderful, cozy and warm. Top that with memory foam and heavy 200 gram Flannel Sheets and you get some real mountain comfort through the nights.

A bit of a step back in time, the cottage is adorned with a beautiful and interesting blend of Early American Folk & Impressionist Art, 19th c. photography, fine vintage floral and avian embroidery compositions and a wealth of other worldly curiosities from times past.

After exploring the Volcanoes National Park you can, at your will and leisure, come home ... plug into our tech saturated world to your hearts content OR be Bold and dare to opt out for a while and just enjoy the simpler pleasures of life that the lush mountain rain forest and its chattering, happy native bird inhabitants provide. Clear star studded evenings and night time Volcano viewing offer easily attained additional pleasures just minutes from the cottage.

The cottage is well stocked with many quality Ravensburg Jig Saw puzzles as well as many family oriented word and card games for fun evenings at home around the fireplace.

There is also a large and diverse island oriented library of many books on Big Island, Hiking, Birds, Fishes, Shells and Tropical Flowers.

The Kitchen area is extremely well appointed and it is entirely possible to produce home cooked or baked gourmet dishes if one is inclined.

The Kitchen is equipped with a wonderful KitchenAid Mixer.

There is a complete diverse assortment of Corning Amber Vision cookware as well as the more traditional cast iron and ceramic ware.

If you know how to cook or bake well, this kitchen will live up to your needs and abilities.

There are fine Old English Bone China antique dishes, tea cups and such to serve your creations upon.

There are also a wealth of specialty cook books in the cottage for inspiration.

The ever ready & willing waffle maker with fixings & French Press coffee maker make easing into your Volcano mornings simple and pleasurable. Fresh whole coffee beans, a variety of teas, lots of fresh island spring / deep well water are always provided for guests.

A creative, private and unusual mountain haven. The cottage offers 1200 square feet of quiet, room to roam open space with a high vaulted open living room clear story ceiling. The second floor master bedroom offers a cozy Cal King memory foam topped bed individually heated on both sides with exceptional linens ( Tribeca 200 gram Heavy Flannel Sheets which are truly heavenly )

There is an additional second smaller bedroom upstairs, with a nice cozy memory foam topped and heated, flannel sheeted Full Size bed.

Both bedrooms have their own internet connected televisions with Netflix.

There is also a small water closet upstairs for convenient evening needs.

This is a 1/2 Bathroom with toilet and sink.

The cottage is equipped with a Graco Pack 'n Play On the Go Travel Playard, Go Green with mattress, sheets and waterproof mattress pad, safety gates & electrical plug covers.

INSIDE the cottage is a NON SMOKING environment. (smoking is not a problem on the OUTSIDE deck area) There is a light daily house cleaning with a changing of bed linens and towels if desired. Propane gas for the fireplace is provided. High Speed WiFi & Ethernet internet access are provided.

Both bedrooms and the Living Room have internet enabled televisions offering guests Netflix, Music & Web Access.( 3 total)

A private open air deck outfitted with Lounge chairs is nestled under the canopy of the secluded rainforest of Hapu'u Tree Ferns, Magnolia, Camellia and a host of other native plants amidst the sounds of songbirds and at times our Native I'o hawks soaring overhead.

The cottage is vintage 1940's Hawaii and has been endowed with an eclectic, creative blend of materials in a Victorian / Deco manner. Located in the original historic section of Volcano Village, the cottage is about one mile from the entry to Volcanoes National Park. One could easily spend two full days exploring this very large park and still not see it all.

To be clear, the cottage is listed as having Two bathrooms.

There are in reality 1 1/2 bathrooms

A full bath and shower downstairs and a handy 1/2 bathroom water closet ( toilet and small sink ) upstairs with the bedrooms for evening needs.

Why Richard Hamilton chose Volcano Village

Why this property?

I enjoy hosting guests from all over the world.

I try to treat folks as I would like to be treated while traveling.

In Volcano this means in part providing 'comfort' and a home like environment for folks that rivals their own homes conveniences and furnishings.

Warm heated beds, gas fireplace, heavy robes, flannel sheets, fresh coffee beans, waffles in the morning and such.

Volcano can get chilly (no cold) at times and building in these creature comforts for guests is a common sense pleasure to provide.

The cottage is creative, even a bit eccentric and filled with an interesting blend of antiques and worldly curiosities.

It is a cozy and fun cottage to spend time in after exploring and it does know how to provide an environment of privacy, intimacy and creature comforts.

What makes this cottage unique

I pride myself on good, even great linens.

The beds are heated and covered with heavy weight flannel sheets when the season dictates and of course wonderful high grade Kassatex towels and robes.

One must above all else in Volcano, be cozy and warm and well fed.

The cottage does this with ease and a smile.

Guestbook comments from the owner

This cute little cottage gave me the same feeling I used to have when staying at my Aunt and Uncle's cottage on the lake growing up! Having never rented a place like this, I was pleasantly surprised and would highly recommend this cottage over an impersonal hotel. Richard made things very easy and was very attentive to our needs. The ambiance was warm and inviting when we arrived with a fire burning, cozy lighting and the best fruit tray and waffle mix waiting. After instructions on how to operate the TVs, locks and fireplace, I rarely saw Richard, but he somehow knew just what we would like and had it there for us. I was working in Hilo for the week and he even texted me to let me know of a bad accident that had closed the road, suggesting I might want to have dinner in Hilo.

The cottage is clean, well kept, has great beds, has a well-equipped kitchen, and the feeling sitting on the deck in the middle of a rain forest is very relaxing. Between the environment and the small treats Richard left for me, I felt very spoiled.

I highly recommend this cottage for adults, but would be a little hesitant to take young children unless they are angels who never pick things up. There are many collectibles throughout the cottage. It is obvious that Richard has put a lot of thought into every detail and really cares about the people he rents to, doing all he can to make them very comfortable. The only problem for me is that this isn't located in my back yard.

A Gem in Hawaii

This cottage is amazing! All of the art. antiques, photos and the best equipped kitchen. Richard the host shows you around, gives complete instructions and then is gone, not to be seen or heard from unless you need help. Very close to the park and several less used beaches. Two nights does not cut it. Next time it will be for a week. Thanks Richard.

Owner's Response: Aloha Edgar and Judy, Thank you for choosing to stay in my Volcano cottage. Also for the generosity of your time to write a kind review. It was fun and a pleasure to have you both be guests. Your love of "old things" was evident to me in the first moments that you walked in the front door. You both seemed like perfect fits for our little Volcano Village. I do hope that on your next trip over to Hawaii you will stay with us again. There is always a free and complimentary night offered to your family from mine. It would be our pleasure. As you discovered on your visit that Volcano while rural and off the beaten path is a great location to explore a lot of the different areas of the island from. I am glad also that you took the time to venture down to Punalu'u and the South Point areas to explore the coastlines in that special undeveloped part of the island. These areas are perhaps not the best for swimming as the ocean is a bit rough but it is extra special in this day and age to have so much untouched amazing Hawaii Coastline to explore while having it pretty much to yourselves. I am glad you made that early morning effort. The National Park area is quite large as you discovered and is indeed worth spending additional days seeking out all the great hikes and sights it offers. While hot and sunny Hilo and Kona certainly do have their own great attributes and attractions they do not have Volcano's special ever cool and fresh mountain air to relax in. Hot weather is nice but the cool mountain air of Volcano is for me personally the ideal. So glad you had a wonderful visit. Aloha with thanks and my best wishes to you both.....Richard

Please remember that there is always free and complimentary night in the Volcano cottage waiting for you here in the rain forest. I could tell that Hawaii suited you both quite well. It is indeed a beautiful island. Till we meet again, Aloha and with my best wishes to you both for health and happiness. Every Day is a Gift.

Wonderful stay in Volcano

  • 5 of 5

We wish we could have stayed longer than the two nights at Richard's rental in Volcano. He had so many interesting antiques, photos, books, puzzles, etc. that we just didn't have the time to enjoy. He was an excellent host, welcoming us when we arrived, and checking in on us during our stay. His house was very well equipped and comfortable with many thoughtful extra touches, such as battery powered lights on the staircase to light our way more completely. The fireplace gave a warm glow on a chilly evening. The proximity to the national park allowed us to see Pele's handiwork glowing after dark. I heartily recommend staying at Richard's property, and our family hopes to return on our next trip to the island.

Owner's Response: Aloha K and family. Thank you so much for taking your time to leave a few kind words about your visit to the Volcano Village cottage. This is very much appreciated. We enjoyed very much having your family as guests. You were all genuinely gracious and charming. I feel I have once again been blessed with wonderful guests. Please remember that there is an open invitation to your family for a free complimentary night in the cottage when you visit your daughter in Hawaii once again. We would love to have you. Till then and when, Aloha, with my best regards, thanks and good wishes to you all.

Just reviewing the other posts about Volcano House... I can only echo each of the glowing reports! I will always remember standing at my bedroom window looking out into the tropical rainforest. The cottage itself is a delight, with nostalgic and whimsical objects everywhere! From binoculars to umbrellas to toothbrushes, virtually every thing is provided. In advance of our arrival, Richard walked us thru the entire check-in experience, offering helpful tips about grocery shopping and road travel. He was on hand to greet us and saw to it that we were comfortably settled in. We do plan to return!

Owner's Response: Aloha V and R, Thank you so much for giving of Your time to leave such kind words of your visit to my Volcano cottage. The cottage is very much a memory and also a reflection of the cottage my own Grandparents had near Walden Pond in Concord, Lincoln Massachusetts. Those memories somehow never leave a person and are always good to recall as the "good old days". Thank you for being part of that in my little cottage. You were wonderful and gracious guests. Please remember that there is always a free complimentary night in the Volcano cottage waiting for you. With my sincere thanks and best regards, Aloha, Richard

Excellent location, attentive host, mixed feelings about the property.

  • 2 of 5

It's definitely one of the more unique rentals you'll encounter. Eclectically furnished, it's great for people who don't want a cookie cutter type of lodging. Our host Richard was attentive and came by every day to straighten up and make sure things were clean and stocked. A few issues though:

1) The biggest issue: there was a very strong smell of mildew throughout the house the entire time we stayed there despite keeping the dehumidifiers running full blast. I realize that Volcano is in a rain forest, but the house is not well set up to handle the humidity, especially with all the little throw rugs and hangings. They trap moisture and exacerbate the problem.

2) The upstairs water closet door has cut-outs that detract from the privacy of the occupant. It was disconcerting.

3) Internet access was good but there's no TV service. We tried to access news, weather and sports info from the smart TV in the living room but the user interface was very challenging.

I really wanted to like my stay at this property but that mildew smell was a big issue and I doubt I'll return.

Owner's Response: Hello R L, I am truly saddened by your Two Star review. That is way below what is acceptable. Two Stars is Terrible. However I will take it to heart and will improve those things that I am able to. I do want my guests to be happy. The issue of mildew you mention is a concern always for all residents of Volcano. It is indeed a rain forest and Does have its unique demands. I went back and looked at the accumulated rainfall history for your Three Day rental December, 26th, 27th and 28th. These totals are representing weather in Hilo and are likely quite similar. From December 1st, 2015 thru your departure on the 28th we had an accumulated total of 10.62 inches. A fair amount of rain. The cottage is equipped with De humdifier, Hepa filter and a propane Gas fireplace. Generally this is very adequate to deal with the rain forest. I would also mention that in Volcano we do get "vog". Vog is Volcanic Gas emission from the Volcano. That too can affect people with allergies and may have played a part in your reaction. Regardless, YOU were affected and I apologize for whichever the reasons both within and beyond my control. The small area rugs you mention are always cleaned, aired and washed. They are machine dried and never put out damp or stale. You mention the upstairs small water closet bathroom has privacy issues because of the Vents within the door. (these are part of the design to promote air flow in the cottage to help prevent mildew conditions) All three of the vents have LOUVRES in them and with a touch of ones finger, they can all be effortlessly closed for total privacy. Again, I apologize for not having this better explained to you during your welcoming and operational tour of the cottage. I will now put a small note on the door making this much more apparent for folks in the future. You mention also the Internet TV.and the difficulty with the Sony / Google operation interface. Yes, tech Can be challenging I agree. When I have guests in the cottage I make myself Very Available and Willing to help guests with any operational issues. I am literally a "phone call away" During my greeting and introduction to guests with the operation of the cottage, I always encourage people to ask exactly this type of question when they need further explanation. It is never a problem or any sort of imposition on me to be called on for any needs by my guests. I wish you had called me for a further hands on TV tutorial. I am very sorry my cottage disappointed you.

Richard is a great host!

Richard provided very detailed instructions and helpful hints prior to our arrival. He met us upon arrival, helped us unload luggage, and gave a detailed tour of the house. There were also numerous labels on light switches, instructions to use appliances etc. There were books and literature on local attractions.

The beds were comfortable. Richard also has a supply of helpful items; umbrellas, etc for guest use. The house was equipped for us to cook as well as relax. The house is eclectic and charming, surrounded by lush greenery.

Old Town Volcano Village is the original historic section of Volcano,

It is located about 5 minutes from the entrance to Volcanoes National Park.

I personally feel the Village is an ideal base to explore the entire island from.

I especially like to come back to the cooler mountain air after visiting some of the Hotter sea level areas of Hilo or Kona.

Volcano is at the 4000 foot elevation of Mauna Loa which rises 13, 500 above sea level.

From the Volcano area one can spend wonderful time exploring the National Park and night time volcano viewing is just a short drive. If one wants to go to the sea level beaches in Hilo or the Punalu'u and South Point areas these too are very easy, convenient and short drives.
