Nice cabin on hillside

  • 3 of 5

Close to Boone, Valle Cruis, Hawksnest. Lots of room for everyone with 4 bedrooms and four bathrooms plus a bonus area with a trundle bed. Clean with no smells. But the cabin could use some new dining and living room furniture (showing wear). Comfortable beds with linens and towels provided. Fabulous hot tub, rocking chair porches and swing. Be aware that private road to cabin is steep and on shady side of hill making it icey in the winter if recent snows. AWD or 4WD is a must have. Would stay here again.

lovely cabin, great location, but...

  • 2 of 5

Cherry Haven is a great cabin in a great location, convenient to Boone and surrounding areas. Having a bathroom for each bedroom was wonderful. Even though it snowed during our stay getting around was easy with our 4 wheel drive.

But there were many things that got to the point of being more than inconvenient. If the owners would put just a little into these issues we would definitely consider renting again in the spring.

The wood burning fireplace chimney needs a good cleaning(chimney), kitchen was not well stocked(ie 4 glasses) and pots that were there are old and damaged, oven would not regulate temp(only broil), dishwasher got stuck on cycle and ran all night, overall disrepair(blinds missing, doors broken/missing on closets, heater in upstairs bathroom broken, power downstairs kept going off, hot tub smelled like mildew).

With a little investment these things could be easily taken care of and make Cherry Haven a mountain cabin heaven.

We will be looking into spring and will inquire about these fixes before we commit to renting again.

I was shocked at the smell and lack of cleanliness

  • 1 of 5

First of all let me say that this cabin has a lot of potential. With that said, we left after about two hours of arriving. I first entered the home fully knowing the cabin allowed pets but was shocked at the smell. I am not a cat owner but have been so before so I am aware of what a clean home with a cat present should smell like. This cabin reeked of cat spray. So much so that we attempted to place dryer sheets near the window units in hopes of calming the smell. I did notice two new odor controllers on the mantle but they were no match. Downstairs was a different story, it smelled of mold and mildew and again dryer sheets did not help. The upstairs bedroom looked as if it had not been painted in many years. The walls had become dingy and they were littered with markings. There was a dresser there with drawer fronts missing. The living room contained several seating choices but the two couches were covered in pet hair. There was a rocker near the dining room that was too filthy for any of us to sit on. Near the hot tub there was a bench that if anyone sat on, I'm certain it would have fallen apart. I was frustrated to say the least at how someone considered this unit rentable and decided to step outside for fresh air and to gather my thoughts as I had every intention of enjoying my weekend with my family. I made a call to the rental company and left a message. We decided to head to a store to grab some food and was contacted by the rental agency. I explained the issues and she promptly moved us to another cabin about 40 minutes away. I was highly disappointed with the condition of the original cabin and frustrated with the inconvenience of having to relocate but there is no way we would have been remotely comfortable with the smell or condition. Hats off to Wendy for doing what she could to make it right. I hope the owners fix the issues as I could see potential in this cabin.

Family reunion

  • 3 of 5

A message was sent to the rental company detailing problems that we had. Aside from the uncomfortable beds; the majority of our concerns dealt with things that the rental company should have completed before our arrival.

We understand that it was a mountain cabin and would not be like renting a motel. We did have adequate space. We enjoyed our stay, especially the hot tub. The bathrooms and appliances worked well.
