About the property

5 Bedroom, 5 Bathroom With Garden

Bold colors and contemporary art against classic period detail create a sophisticated and playful atmosphere in this large Italianate Victorian. Situated in the heart of Portland's historic West End, the house has three comfortable bedrooms on the second floor: one with a king bed; one with twin bunk beds; and one with a twin bed and a double sofa bed - each with an adjacent bathroom. There is one delightful bedroom with a queen bed and a bathroom on the third floor, and a second large bedroom with a queen bed and twin bed with a private bathroom. Play pool in the third floor suite, or luxuriate old school in one of two claw foot tubs with the breeze coming through the large bathroom windows and skylights. The shade garden along the side of the house is a perfect setting for morning coffee before heading out to wander the brick sidewalks and cobblestone streets of the Old Port, or an evening prosecco before strolling to one the many award winning restaurants just a short walk away. Explore the beautiful beaches and rocky coastline within easy driving distance of Portland, or take a ferry to one of the many islands in Casco bay. This is a comfortable, funky, and spacious home base for your family, friends and your dog to explore the beautiful coast of Maine.

About Erik Mercer

My partner, Sandro, and I moved here from New York City while our dear friend Rachel was pregnant with our second daughter. Looking for a saner place to raise children, we chose Portland because my family is here and because it is a progressive place where we knew no eyebrows would be raised at two dads raising two girls. I am a social worker and Sandro is a writer and Italian teacher. We rent the house during the summer when we travel back to Sandro's home in Sardinia to spend time with his family, and give our girls the chance to immerse themselves in delicious Italian culture and speak better Italian than me when we get back even though they are 3 and 4...

What makes this house unique

When we initially asked our broker to see this house, he said, 'Are you sure? It's an oddball.' We insisted and realized as soon as we walked in that it's quirky layout, wonderful details and the absence of uninspired renovations were a perfect match for us. The house has undeniably good energy (verified by several of our hippy dippy friends and one psychic) that we felt right away. Pulling up carpets to find extraordinary wood floors and discovering that the fireplaces actually DO work were just the beginning of our love affair with this house. We dug it the moment we walked in and we dig it just was much 4 years later!

Gorgeous, spacious, & perfect home away from home

  • 5 of 5

My family and I stayed in Erik's beautiful home for a week in July and we could not have had a better experience. Erik was communicative beforehand and provided us with clear instructions. Once we arrived the house was pristine and had plenty of space to accommodate all 10 of us. We were staying in the house because I was getting married in South Portland. The top floor was the absolute perfect place to host the bridal party as we got ready on my wedding day. The house is so lovely that our photographer insisted that do several portraits inside. We highly recommend staying here!!

Portland Victorian Duplex with lots of room to roam!

  • 4 of 5

Location is perfect as it is within an easy walk to downtown Portland and all the happening restaurants and boutiques. The home is a lovely old Victorian duplex with lots of space to stretch out in. We were in Portland for the wedding of our son and new daughter-in-law and it was perfect as a home base. Particularly when there were so many family members in town and it gave us a place to chill. If we had been in a hotel it would have been very difficult to have all the family in one location.

Bear in mind that the third floor is a bit of a trek so if there are elderly family members, you will want to locate them on the second floor. Also the third floor gets a little warm, but fortunately the weather was on the cool side so we didn't need the A/C units on constantly.

Thanks for the fun stay in Portland.

Beautiful and Functional Wedding Home Base Rental

  • 5 of 5

We came across this beautiful home while looking for a larger place in Portland for my family to stay the days leading up to and after my wedding. I really wanted to see the place in person before reserving and Erik immediately coordinated a date where I could do a walk through of the house. The pictures are gorgeous but it was even more gorgeous in person. The booking process was very easy and I actually returned another time to show my fiances family the home and Erik was happy to let me do that. The place is gorgeously vintage yet still has modern flair and a warm home feeling. I have a large family and a lot of people coming and going so this 5 bedroom home worked perfectly and the 3 levels helped to let people have space when needed. It is tough to find something so big in the old port and we were happy to stumble upon this. It was the perfect back drop and home base for my wedding. My photographer also thought so as she had spent a good hour or so just photographing us getting ready there in different spaces and small details of the house. I had a wonderful experience on such an important day and I cant wait to return and stay again for vacation someday.

Thanks Erik!

Beautiful home in a wonderful neighborhood. Couldn't ask for more!

  • 5 of 5

This was our first visit to Maine, and we can't wait to come back! Erik's home and his responsiveness and attention to detail were outstanding! We immediately felt at home in this superbly decorated house. There were six of us and everyone found their favorite spot or nook.

We were a short walk from a great little market (one of Erik's many excellent recommendations), and a nice walk to the Arts District and Old Port.. The location was a great home base enabling us to take day trips to Acadia National Park and to area beaches and beautiful towns along the coast.

It was truly one of our favorite family vacations!

Beautiful home, great neighborhood

  • 5 of 5

We absolutely loved staying in this beautiful, large house on a lovely street in the West End neighborhood. It's on a very quiet street and is incredibly private. It's a charming old house that is beautifully decorated with a lot of fun modern style. The new 3rd floor loft area is incredibly cool, too. There's tons of space, and it's very comfortable. We had the entire bridal party stay there for my wedding, and the house was honestly one of the highlights of the whole weekend! Working with Erik was a pleasure as well. Communication was great, and he was so nice. We loved everything about this experience.

Perfect Place in Portland

  • 5 of 5

Destination wedding and needed a place for the bride's family and friends, a tall order! Was in peak tourist season, and never been to the area. The pictures were awesome, but the house was beyond that. Our group of 10 walked around for days with our mouths open savoring the detail and beauty of this home and neighborhood. Every room, every wall, every floor unique and restored. We wanted them to talk and tell us the history of this home and the families it knew. The love and comfort in this home was everywhere and felt so welcoming and spacious. Never felt crowded even when visitors and extras came to visit, and even a few slept on a couch or two when the opportunity was needed. We managed with ease, with the helpful list of restaurants and contacts in case of anything list left by our hosts. Every recommendation was spot on. Portland really has exceptional restaurants, and plenty, so honest reviews welcome. Neighborhood walks, runs, exploring the streets was safe and so beautiful. Gyms, yoga, coffee spots, local pubs, nail salons all close by. Our group ages ranged from 20's to 70's and off in many directions. Two cars were adequate with Uber picking up the late stragglers and wandering explorers as some went on day trips and others just walked . Parking very convenient at home, not so much in the city, but huge summer population also. Super bonus were all the bathrooms! Listing says 3.5 but NOW 4.5 which is so needed with a group of people and so hard to find in the Portland area. Obviously, we all LOVED this place, location, and experience. It felt like a dear friend opened their home to us, and we truly appreciated it all. Would come back, and strongly encouraging friends to put this and Portland on their bucket list. The only restriction on rental would be for non-stair climbers. The second floor pretty easy to navigate, but third a bit more for the non-physically able, and has 2 lovely bedrooms with full baths up there too. Also a great sleeping couch and pool table. As our group came and went, musical beds seemed like fun to experience each area. Even the bride and groom came to stay the last 2 nights with us!! The groom lost his wedding ring too, but thankfully found after we all left and kind family and friends on property promptly arranged for easy pickup! THANK YOU owners for this wonderful time, it made every moment there so special. I truly plan on coming back and grateful for your warm hospitality and special touches.
