About the property

3 Bedroom, 3 Bathroom fully-furnished cabin, private lake-front, quiet tranquil

Country Acres Retreat has 3 bedrooms and 3 baths plus an additional sleeping area and sleeps up to 10-11 persons. Also available within a few hundred feet, if needed, is a pavilion with picnic tables, chairs, gas grills, and a campfire circle of large rocks for relaxation, story-telling, or reminiscing.

This cabin features a full hickory kitchen with an eat-in bar area, and includes an electric range, microwave, blender, dishwasher, lots of silverware, plates, glasses, cooking utensils, and much more.

The Great Room features a rustic, native sugar maple hardwood floor which still shows the tap holes made by the 'sugaring' process years ago. The Great Room is furnished with a sofa, love seat, recliner, and a large, 'antique' plank-style table with a bench and chairs seating from ten to twelve people.

A tastefully decorated full bath and a bedroom with a queen size bed is on the main floor. One is struck by the rustically beautiful wooden floors, ceilings and trim.

The loft affords a beautiful view of the two-acre lake, and includes a king-sized bed (new in 2014), and additional sleeping space of two single beds on rollers for those 'extra,' younger guests.

The ground floor includes a bedroom with a full-sized bed with a single trundle bed underneath, a men's and a ladies restroom and shower, and a utility room with a washer and a dryer. Rounding out the ground floor is a family room with a queen sized sleeper sofa bed (new in 2014), a cot, a TV on 60-channel Dish Network plus the Pittsburgh local channels, DVD and a VCR. A small baby crib and a larger crib are also available as needed. Again, there is a beautiful view of the water.

** New in 2017 on the ground floor is a landscaped paver patio area and stone steps, perfect for sitting and relaxing while viewing the lake.

SPECIAL NOTE: All linens, towels, toilet tissue, coffee and hot cocoa mix are provided with the rental charges as a convenience to our guests!

About Ida Maust & Family

Wife & family of Mennonite pastor & strawberry farmer. Owners of farm for 40 years, formerly growing strawberries, corn, potatoes, broccoli, cauliflower, and other vegetables. Now the farm has been converted to beautiful hay fields.

Ida Maust & Family purchased this cabin in 2002

Why Ida Maust & Family chose Western

My nine children grew up on this farm while my husband was a teacher, pastor, and farmer. While walking on the farm, we saw that it was a beautiful setting to build a lake, pavilion, and later a cabin for when the family came home.

Decided immediately to rent out the cabin for vacationers and share the hospitality with so many more.

The area is quiet and private, let close enough to enjoy the local attractions and the mountains of Western Maryland.

What makes this cabin unique

The cabin is fully furnished, heated, and overlooks our private 2-acre lake. Also available within a few hundred feet, if needed, is a pavilion with picnic tables, chairs, gas grill, and a campfire circle of large rocks for relaxation, story-telling, or reminiscing.

A number of weddings have also been held on the farm in the beautiful setting of the lake area.

Whether you are seeking a peaceful retreat, a romantic getaway, or simply want to experience a natural wonder, you will find what you are looking for at the Country Acres Retreat.

Guestbook comments from the owner

Day 1: We arrived at the cabin a little later than we had planned. After driving nearly 11 hours today with 9 children, I was tired & ready to rest. We pulled in at 10:00 pm & I was amazed at what all the Lord had done! The cabin was beautiful. There was snow covering the ground but the porch had been cleared for us. It was so cold out & everyone was tired & hungry. We walked into thecabin & was greeted with a wonderful smell, :) It was a huge pot of chicken soup on the stove! I felt so welcome & so blessed that I began to cry & just say "Thank you Lord!" We were no longer tired because we were filled with such excitment of what all the Lord had done. We all explored the beautiful cabin & of course, enjoyed the delicious soup. It was so wonderful to see our 9 children, seated around the table, laughing & enjoying the blessings of God. Everything is so perfect. I kissed all the kids goodnight & red some from God's word. I then spent some time just thanking God for this wonderful place to come to. We coudl have never found a better place to stay. I wish we could spend every Christmas here because I can certainly feel the Lord's presence here! What a blessing. Thank you Lord & thank you for allowing us to visit with this little piece of Heaven on earth.

Day 2: What a wonderful day we have had today. We finished the soup & had hot cocoa. The little kids loved teh sand toys & balls. The older kids enjoyed volleyball & exploring the woods. They all loved watching the ducks in the pond. It was cold out but no snow today. Our 7yr old sat back in the chair today after a long day of play & said "Mom, God has been so good!" i had to say "yes son he truly has" The kids are now playing.

Day 3: That kids wante dto go fishing so bad. Their Dad told them it was too cold to fish but they wanted to give it a try. They fished for about an hour and caught nothing but weeds. I told them we coudl have weed stew for dinner. I hid some coins all through the woods & let them go exploring for hidden treasure. They all collected pine cones & leaves to put in their memory book. We had watched a movie earlier that was about a wild black horse that had 2 teens trained. It was a wonderful family movie. The neatest thing about it though was that we later saw a horse that looked just like it!! We went for a walk in the woods & at the end of the woods there stood 3 BEAUTIFUL horses! The mare was just like the one in the movie!

Some Good, Some Surprises

  • 4 of 5

We booked this cabin based on the listing's claim that it was quiet and tranquil. For the most part, it was.....when ATVs weren't tearing around the lake. Our very first night, we sat down for dinner out on the deck and ATVs began to go around the lake repeatedly. It was so loud we couldn't hear our own conversation. Calls to the owner ended with voice mails being left, but I did talk to them the next day and they said their grandkids were riding them and they'd ask them to stop. They did not stop, so the quietness and tranquil surroundings were shattered for 5 out of our 7 nights. We felt somewhat cheated in that sense.

The cabin was clean enough, considering the grandkids did the cleaning. I cleaned the refrigerator when we arrived so that no one would think we'd left it the way we found it.

The beds were comfortable.

It is close enough to Deep Creek Lake for us to go and enjoy some boating without a long drive.

The listed amenities are not consistent.....for example, our boys were really enjoying the canoe and looked forward to using it on the weekend, but someone came and took it on Thursday evening and never did return it, so, again, we felt cheated as the promised amenities were part of the reason we rented the cabin. The canoe being taken away was a real bummer for us.

The grandkids going swimming in the lake did not bother us, but it would have been nice to know who they were in advance since, while they swam, we were the only adults present. We felt if something bad happened (which is not unreasonable with kids in water) we would certainly be questioned and that caused anxiety.

Overall, I think this cabin has the potential to be a great vacation spot. We felt like some of what we paid for - the quietness and use of a canoe, etc., were not what they were advertised to be and we felt cheated to pay for things we were told we'd have, but that were not available.

It is a lovely cabin and we saw a total of only 2 mosquitoes the entire time we were there.

Taking walks around the lake was quite enjoyable when the ATVs were not running.

This was our first vacation in 5 years due to several crisis situations, including cancer, so we longed for a quiet, tranquil spot where we could be rid of anxiety for at least a week.

We are leaving it 4 stars because some of what was promised did hold true. I would rather give it 3.5.

My son fixed the peddle boat, which was broken when we arrived. We are not sure how long that fix will hold.

Owner's Response: Tricia, Thank you for staying with us and we appreciate your feedback. We strive to have our cabin be a place to getaway and relax and refresh, so if we fall short we definitely want to address it. One of the benefits of being on the farm is to get away from having neighbors right up against you on all sides like you may have at other locations on the lake for much more money. A suggestion that we have for our guests that would like an extra amount of privacy is that the pavilion and lake can be reserved exclusively for a small additional fee of $35 per day. At times our neighbors or family ask to go swimming or hold an event at the pavilion, and we try to balance that with the desire to not interfere with guests in the cabin. However, if our guests reserve the whole property, we won't allow others to use it. I apologize for the noise that you had from the children riding ATV's. We have asked them not to ride near the cabin or lake when guests are present, and we will reinforce that to them. Although we want them to enjoy their farm, we do not want them to disturb our guests and we will do our best so that it doesn't happen again. The canoe is a family member's and they happened to be going on a canoe trip with a church group that weekend so they took it with them. I believe that was the first that ever happened, but I realize that although we don't charge for it, our guests enjoy it, so we will be purchasing one that we can count on will stay at the lake so it is always available. We will take a look at the peddle boat as well to insure it is in working order. We do apologize that our cabin was not exactly what you needed, and we thank you for letting us know what did not meet your expectations. If we don't know, then we can't make adjustments to be the best we can be. We would be happy to credit you back a portion of your costs for what you feel you is right. We hope you find the changes we are making acceptable - four stars is never good enough and we hope that next time you will wish you could give us six stars!

This cabin is amazing!!!! Very clean and private.

  • 5 of 5

My family and I really enjoyed our 2 night stay at Country Acres Retreat July 10-12 2017.As we walked into the cabin, we were greeted with a warm welcome card and a bottle of jelly. The owner Ms. Ida drove down to the cabin to welcome us and she was able to answer all our questions. The cabin is very clean and private and the lake is a plus!!!! The kids had fun making s'mores at the pavilion and canoeing on the lake. Overall, my family and I had fun. My kids made me promise to bring them back 2018 summer. So we will be back. Before I forget, the cabin is fully stacked with towels, blankets, kitchen utensils and the big pot was a plus. The cabin is home away from home. Just bring groceries. I gave this cabin a five star ⭐️. Don't hesitate, just book it, I promise you will not regret. Thanks Ms. Ida for sharing your beautiful Cabin with the world 🌎.
