About april aboud

i am originally from Toronto, Canada. i hold a business degree in Advertising and Marketing, and worked in that field and Publishing for over 25 years before i looked to make a change in my life. when i first left Canada i came to Costa Rica in the winter of 1992, (over 25 years) and fell in love with the area right there and then. I purchased a little piece of paradise where i am now living permanently. I am an artist that has a contractor business here, and i also publish our local newspaper called THE DIRT ROAD. i am currently divorced, living on the property in my first home i built myself back then when there was no electricity and no water, with just 3 Costa Rican’s and a lot of luck. I live here permanently with my two dogs, Akun and Nicoya. I am an entrepreneur from the start, when i came to Costa Rica our village had just got electricity so i started our first bakery, called 'la casa Rosa', delivering pizza and fresh baked bread to our very small population...i later moved on to the manager and chef at Star Mountain resort in MalPais...i also had a massage practice and created beach parties for the young tourists in the early years... Shortly thereafter i purchased this property and started building my paint contractors business. In 2009 i started our village newspaper called The Dirt Road. i have worked in the many homes of Mel Gibson as the main Paint Contractor and color consultant here in Costa Rica and MalPais, and well as many other homes of the rich and famous here. I fell in love with our area the moment i saw it, and still believe it is the best part of Costa Rica. over 25years have passed and I'm what most locals refer to as an 'old school' resident. i love it here and especially grateful i can share my love of the village, and the incredible nature with my guests.

april aboud purchased this house in 2000

Why april aboud chose Santa Teresa Beach

I have seen all of Costa Rica in my first 5 years when I came here in 1992 and besides Playa Santa Teresa being voted as the top 5 beaches in the world, i personally don’t think there is a more beautiful beach anywhere. I have watched this area grow from No electricity and No phone lines, and a population of about 30 families, with only 2 little local restaurants, 2 public schools, no banks or even a grocery store; into the current village we have now, which includes 4 private schools, 30 international cuisine restaurants, 10 yoga studios and spas, famous surf breaks, 5 grocery stores, banks, doctors, and a population of over 1,000 families. And i still love it here ! In 2000 I decided it was finally time to buy land, and although i could have traded my car for a piece of beachfront land in 1994, when i started to look for my paradise, i looked to the small hillside that follows our coastline for miles. i wanted to be up and above the growing crowds, but still close enough to be a part of the village. This is a very special piece of land, above the emerald green jungle, looking at the gem of the pacific for miles and miles. I own this little knoll overlooking the best of the best. I have NO neighbors on either side of me, (because I’m on this knoll). I rest about 50 meters above it all, so you can actually see the beach, the palm trees and the surfers catching the waves. Whether you like watching the monkey’s pass by, tropical birds or relaxing with a cup of tea and a good book, or how about a margarita to watch the amazing sunsets, or sit by the pool and stargaze all night. The Emerald Abode is my own private sanctuary, and i'm happy to share it with my is truly the gem of Santa Teresa for me. this is a non-smoking property.

What makes this house unique

Over the past 25 years i have had many visiting friends and family, all saying the same thing about my property. Everyone that visits mentions the amazing energy of the land and the truly amazing large views. But it wasn't until 2013 that i decided to build a rental home to share this beautiful piece of paradise with others. So my second home, the Emerald Abode, was designed for the visitor. This Tropical house was designed open air to nature, to take advantage of the amazing views, the sound of the ocean waves 24/7, and fresh air! Each room has a large ocean view, with the jungle below creating an emerald carpet, making a perfect back drop for sitting back and relaxing. Some have said the view inspires, and as an artist i know why. Living outside of the hustle and bustling of the big cities and even our little village here, one can hear the tropical birds and migrating monkeys in the early morning, watch the iguana’s and little gecko’s playing all day, and hear the crickets and tree frogs at night, but the most spectacular part of this property, is to see and hear the ocean 24/7. The rhythm of the ocean is really hypnotic and can roll away even the most stressed situation, making this the perfect relaxing and romantic place in Santa Teresa. Dreams feel possible when you’re sitting and enjoying the Emerald Abode.

tough to get to...tough to leave!

  • 4 of 5

this was a wonderful place to call home during our stay in santa teresa. although perched on the side of a hill with a killer view of the pacific ocean, the long uphill driveway to get there was a bit of a nightmare...huge ruts, rocks, and a sink hole like no other. but once there, it paradise with a private pool, parrots, howler monkeys, iguanas, and two person hammock. april is an unreal host offering endless info for a unique wonderful experience in this off-the-beaten-path paradise.

Owner's Response: i'm always so happy when guests talk about how wonderful, adventurous and unique their experience at the Emerald Abode was. That is why i created a rental, i own a small very unique piece of paradise, and i love to share it with others. I guess that is why my guests also comment on what a great host i am. It comes natural to me, for i like to help others get the most out of their experience, and i feel privileged to have an incredible place to share. So it is wonderful to be appreciated by my guests. It makes the world a little bit nicer. Costa Rica is a country overflowing with Nature, which is the Main reason why i and many others have settled here, and our MAIN tourist ATTRACTION! And what an AMAZING DIVERSITY OF NATURE WE HAVE, almost second to none in the world, and getting smaller every day! As you may have read in my profile, i have lived here in this village since 1992. So i know a few things about living here that traveler's don't always realize. Being a 3rd world country often means going without the luxury's that North Americans are use to, like infrastructure. what that means to Tourist is that you will be submerged in nature, and not technology and concrete. This country puts more MONEY INTO NATURE, and protecting it, then it does into infrastructure, and that includes roads. So outside the capital most areas have dirt roads, and more recently in more affluent areas asphalt is being used. Few Tax's means little money to maintain these roads, so the Municipality only repairs our dirt roads 1once a year, and so sometimes the roads are great and sometimes not so great. But they do not maintain hillside roads anywhere in the country. Fortunately our neighbors work together after the rains have stopped in late December and fix our communal road. ROAD UPDATE ..dec. 28th 2017 the road in my neighborhood and property has been repaired. No more pot holes and ruts, etc.. :) NOTE to my older generation guests.. this wonderful couple where in their 70's with some physical hip and back issues, for these kind of traveler's driving on CR dirt roads can be challenging . So if you are under 50 chances are you will not even notice or care so much if the country has lots of dirt roads to travel on. Right when you get off the plane, New and Very Exciting things are awaiting you, making CR a wonderful vacation destination for adventurous travelers!

Perfect Honeymoon!

  • 5 of 5

We stayed at the Emerald Abode for 7 nights at the end of August 2017 for our honeymoon and loved every minute of it! Leading up to our trip, April was remarkably helpful in answering questions and providing information about all aspects of the trip. Our flight from Toronto was delayed several hours, however, April assisted us with changing car rental arrangements, ferry schedule, and directions.

During our stay, we explored the town and surrounding villages, went to the nearby waterfall in Montezuma, went zip lining in Mal Pais, snorkeled in the tidal pools, walked the beach, and relaxed at the beautiful property. There really are no words for the view of the ocean from the comfort and privacy of our own pool! We experienced a couple of pretty awesome storms, but were fortunate to have almost perfect weather for the whole trip.

On several mornings and evenings, we had howler monkeys come and visit in the trees nearby, including often in the tree directly in front of the house! There are tons of restaurant options in the town, and we found most of them were fantastic! April made recommendations and was always helpful when we had questions about anything.

We would highly recommend this place to other couples and we are already discussing a return trip to celebrate an anniversary in the coming years!

Most Interesting Trip Ever

  • 5 of 5

The Emerald Abode is an ideal vacation destination for young, agile, adventurous travelers, and physically fit seniors. It is everything that is promised. The scenery is stunning, April is exceptionally knowledgeable and helpful, restaurants in the area are plentiful and the food is eclectic and good (especially at Habanero); and the attractions in the area are splendid. The home has enough conveniences to keep you comfortable: A fully operational outdoor kitchen, which April stocks with some cool stuff before you arrive; a screened bedroom with glass doors that can be air-conditioned if needed (We did not need the AC during our stay.); a bathroom with a large shower; and, of course, the pool. April also provides wi-fi, which was important to us, as Hurricane Harvey pummeled our home in Houston while we were in Costa Rica. If you are in your mid-sixties to early-seventies or over, as my husband and I are, there are a few things you should be aware of before you book. There are a lot of steps up to the house, so you have to carry, rather than roll your luggage when you arrive and depart. Many attractions in the area require a level of physical fitness that I used to have, but don't anymore; and for old fogeys, used to flat, smooth, well maintained US highways, the roads in town, and especially up the mountain to the abode, are a bit scary. All in all, the Emerald Abode is a terrific place to vacation. I just wish we'd done it five years ago.

Hidden Paradise!

  • 5 of 5

Little known paradise overlooking the Pacific in a dry, tropical jungle! Perfect for a couple, who desire privacy, beautiful views, nice dipping pool, security and comfort, and close to great dining and activities. April is a very thorough Hostess, who will help you as much as you wish. Her conscientious attention to detail made our trip even better and was much better than just renting from a faceless company by far! Most amazing and relaxing trip I've ever taken! Sport fishing (check out Capt. Jason and Alva in fishing village), Sailing (Swagman!), Sightseeing, Spa treatments (Florablanca Resort), unique animal and bird watching were some of the fun things we enjoyed. We were concerned this might be a bit too exotic for us (we don't ever rough it) and maybe bugs would be a problem or our lack of Espanol. Very comfortable, no bug problems, and most people speak English. For dining you can't go wrong at Habaneros (bring cash- and one evening they even cooked up our fresh Red Snapper catch for dinner) or Nectar's at Florablanca Resort. Million dollar views!

Romantic, Private, Heaven on Earth

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I truly enjoyed our stay at Emerald Abode. The home is perched in the mountain overlooking the jungle and sea below and has a fantastic view. Everything was very clean, very private, and the accommodations were quite comfortable. It was absolutely wonderful! We chose to sleep open air with the screens but there is an air conditioner for those who choose not to. There was a pleasant breeze all night and howler monkeys howling at the full moon as it set over the ocean at 4 am. What a treat! We enjoyed cooking in the stainless steel kitchen, showering in the open air shower with a view of the sea below and sunbathing in the private dipping pool. Emerald Abode is a place where you can relax all day and rejuvenate. Everything you need is right there. April is very accommodating and tries to help you in every way with directions, assistance going up her road, good places to eat, nice things to do while you are there and anything else you might need. April is unobtrusive but makes herself available if you need her. She was a great host. Thank you April! We highly recommend Emerald Abode to anyone traveling to this area and would certainly stay here if we return. Oh! And I should not forget - April had a huge bowl of delicious fresh fruit waiting for us that lasted the entire stay, frozen fruit for cocktails, and every toiletry you could possibly need. There was a large amount of storage for all your belongings and lots of brochures to help you choose activities in the area. The dogs were very friendly and did not bother us at all. They really didn't even come around but we knew they were present below and keeping us safe. We just loved Emerald Abode and know you will too!

A Memory Maker

  • 5 of 5

Emerald Abode was a perfect setting for our Mother Daughter get away. It was our first trip to Central America....and we felt completely safe and secure the entire time. April thought of everything to make our stay perfect and comfortable....from the well stocked fridge and kitchen....fresh and frozen (for smoothies) fruits.....delicious coffee.....and local beer! As animal lovers the dogs were a joy to be around....but never intrusive. The Howler monkeys were fun to watch and wake up to in the morning....the recommended Quad rental was a complete blast to get around in (after a rocky start of learning how to drive it!) such a fun way to get around and see the sites. Things we loved...just hanging at the very private house and in the lovely pool after a long day of exploring....OSA: live music at the bottom of the hill...snorkeling!....learning to surf!....tidal pools are beautiful!....and facials at Bambu Florblanca .....ahhh...and so much more!!!!.....There are rules to the house but they are what keeps the Emerald Abode the safe, beautiful and relaxing place that it is....I highly recommend this house....especially if like us this is your first trip to Costa Rica....thank you April....for a fabulous time!
