About april aboud

i am originally from Toronto, Canada. i hold a business degree in Advertising and Marketing, and worked in that field and Publishing for over 25 years before i looked to make a change in my life. when i first left Canada i came to Costa Rica in the winter of 1992, (over 25 years) and fell in love with the area right there and then. I purchased a little piece of paradise where i am now living permanently. I am an artist that has a contractor business here, and i also publish our local newspaper called THE DIRT ROAD. i am currently divorced, living on the property in my first home i built myself back then when there was no electricity and no water, with just 3 Costa Rican’s and a lot of luck. I live here permanently with my two dogs, Akun and Nicoya. I am an entrepreneur from the start, when i came to Costa Rica our village had just got electricity so i started our first bakery, called 'la casa Rosa', delivering pizza and fresh baked bread to our very small population...i later moved on to the manager and chef at Star Mountain resort in MalPais...i also had a massage practice and created beach parties for the young tourists in the early years... Shortly thereafter i purchased this property and started building my paint contractors business. In 2009 i started our village newspaper called The Dirt Road. i have worked in the many homes of Mel Gibson as the main Paint Contractor and color consultant here in Costa Rica and MalPais, and well as many other homes of the rich and famous here. I fell in love with our area the moment i saw it, and still believe it is the best part of Costa Rica. over 25years have passed and I'm what most locals refer to as an 'old school' resident. i love it here and especially grateful i can share my love of the village, and the incredible nature with my guests.

april aboud purchased this house in 2000

Why april aboud chose Santa Teresa Beach

I have seen all of Costa Rica in my first 5 years when I came here in 1992 and besides Playa Santa Teresa being voted as the top 5 beaches in the world, i personally don’t think there is a more beautiful beach anywhere. I have watched this area grow from No electricity and No phone lines, and a population of about 30 families, with only 2 little local restaurants, 2 public schools, no banks or even a grocery store; into the current village we have now, which includes 4 private schools, 30 international cuisine restaurants, 10 yoga studios and spas, famous surf breaks, 5 grocery stores, banks, doctors, and a population of over 1,000 families. And i still love it here ! In 2000 I decided it was finally time to buy land, and although i could have traded my car for a piece of beachfront land in 1994, when i started to look for my paradise, i looked to the small hillside that follows our coastline for miles. i wanted to be up and above the growing crowds, but still close enough to be a part of the village. This is a very special piece of land, above the emerald green jungle, looking at the gem of the pacific for miles and miles. I own this little knoll overlooking the best of the best. I have NO neighbors on either side of me, (because I’m on this knoll). I rest about 50 meters above it all, so you can actually see the beach, the palm trees and the surfers catching the waves. Whether you like watching the monkey’s pass by, tropical birds or relaxing with a cup of tea and a good book, or how about a margarita to watch the amazing sunsets, or sit by the pool and stargaze all night. The Emerald Abode is my own private sanctuary, and i'm happy to share it with my is truly the gem of Santa Teresa for me. this is a non-smoking property.

What makes this house unique

Over the past 25 years i have had many visiting friends and family, all saying the same thing about my property. Everyone that visits mentions the amazing energy of the land and the truly amazing large views. But it wasn't until 2013 that i decided to build a rental home to share this beautiful piece of paradise with others. So my second home, the Emerald Abode, was designed for the visitor. This Tropical house was designed open air to nature, to take advantage of the amazing views, the sound of the ocean waves 24/7, and fresh air! Each room has a large ocean view, with the jungle below creating an emerald carpet, making a perfect back drop for sitting back and relaxing. Some have said the view inspires, and as an artist i know why. Living outside of the hustle and bustling of the big cities and even our little village here, one can hear the tropical birds and migrating monkeys in the early morning, watch the iguana’s and little gecko’s playing all day, and hear the crickets and tree frogs at night, but the most spectacular part of this property, is to see and hear the ocean 24/7. The rhythm of the ocean is really hypnotic and can roll away even the most stressed situation, making this the perfect relaxing and romantic place in Santa Teresa. Dreams feel possible when you’re sitting and enjoying the Emerald Abode.

Peaceful retreat from life

  • 5 of 5

We were so blessed to have 6 nights at Emerald Abode! The picture of the woman in the pool is what drew us there and it was definitely the highlight of our stay. It was so peaceful and beautiful we could have stayed right there all day! The pool has jets in it, no chlorine as it is run on a filter system and heated by the sun. It was the perfect temperature all the time. Laying on the loungers and looking at the star filled sky at night was awesome! We enjoyed the 'open air' feeling of the abode. April was very helpful in any way we asked- a WONDERFUL host! She gave us a rep to call for a car rental and advised on a 4 wheel drive, which we now know is definitely necessary. She set up a horseback ride for us on the beach that was a lifetime dream and was beyond my expectations! Don't miss this! Sleeping at night with the ocean air and sounds of the waves was amazing as well as the sunsets! We are so glad we did not overbook ourselves and had lots of time to just relax and found a few very secluded beaches with shade too. Enjoy!

Owner's Response: i love reading how wonderful my guests vacations were. i would hope all Hosts feel the same, some kind of personal responsibility to provide the best you can, and you know you are doing it right when your guests have a great time at your property. i know we can not always please 100%, that is impossible odds to even suggest, and that is a wonderful part of traveling, you get to see and view and live in a whole new experience. But lets face it, some people travel better than others, and CR suits some people better than others too! if you are considering CR and the Emerald Abode, maybe i can say this: "My perfect guest if i could draw a picture (in other words, the common characteristics of my guests that have simply LOVED the Emerald Abode).. The first thing that comes to mind that they all have in common is They Are Happy People; They are Adventurous not only in travel but in life choices for work play family etc; They LOVE nature and want to experience something REAL, first hand and not just in photo's, things like Iguana's, Monkeys, Gecko's, exotic birds; and they are interested in our area, the Dry Tropical Rain Forest. CR is not Florida or California or even Mexico.. we are 8 degrees north of the equator, this makes for different weather conditions (over 200" annual rain), different vegetation (tropical jungle), different animals (monkeys, sloths), even different ocean - warm water yearly, and beaches - clean and un-populated. The fact is CR is different than what most people are going to expect, and that is what is so amazing about this country. i first came here in 1992 and was transfixed by the warm ocean, pristine beaches, kind people, and the monkeys and iguana's. 26 years later i am still transfixed by it's beauty, daily. As we say here 'PuraVida', 'Pure Life'. The sunrise morning walks i take on the beach with my dogs, the sunsets that linger into amazing deep oranges and reds, the ocean and jungle views from my property that melts all my stress away, stars that go on forever, even just simply hanging in my hammock and staring out into the day or the night is a wonderful peaceful experience i cherish. My guests that LOVE it here can FEEL this in the air as well. It's hard to miss if you are open and adventurous in nature, and still carry a little child in your heart. The Village of Santa Teresa/MalPais is very unique in all of CR, and the Emerald Abode is my little piece of Paradise that i like to share with other like minded guests.

Relaxing private oasis in the hills overlooking Santa Teresa Beach

  • 5 of 5

Emerald Abode is a unique, well maintained, 1 bedroom getaway in the trees! The patio is an open air combination kitchen and patio, complete with a hammock. In the bathroom, you can slide open the mirrors to reveal another opportunity to open the house up to the outside. The plunge pool is a necessary cooling opportunity on a hot afternoon or when watching the sun set over the ocean. We never ran the A/C in the bedroom, the screens allowed a breeze to come through and we were perfectly comfortable.

April, the property owner, is a wealth of information and will ensure you have the perfect trip. She ensures there are provisions for coffee, tea and some basic foods to get you through your first night and morning without having to go shopping. The cold beers were a really welcome sight on our first night!

You will definitely need an ATV or 4 wheel drive to get up the road to the property. There are then two flights of steps to walk up before entering the home. If these two things are within your comfort zone then this is the place for you.

We walked up to the property from the beach on a couple of occasions. It's very doable as long as you expect the walk to be steep! It took us 5-10 minutes - We are an active 50 + couple. We visited this area for the surf. We were not disappointed! Santa Teresa and Mal Pais have some great surf spots.

There are plenty of restaurants nearby:

Our favorites were: The bakery for brunch and El Facon, Casa de Mar and Habaneros for dinner. (The latter has a great happy hour deal).

Our one disappointment...... Our stay was too short.. I recommend at least a 2 week stay.

Loved this vacation get away. From the moment we met Ms April, we knew we had a great time coming. House was fantastic, location was a view that words can’t describe. It truly felt like we lived there. Meeting her friends around town to spending time with her dogs was nothing short of awesome. It was the vacation we were looking for. Thank you for a fantastic memory!

Owner's Response: I am always so thankful when guests tell me what a great vacation they had...these guests in particular wanted to see the area thru local eyes, so i offered suggestions to direct them to all the local hangouts, to get the insider point of view, by the time they left they felt like family... some guests love that kind of connection when they travel, other guests are more self sufficient where i only see them at check in and check out, with maybe a quick hello in between.... what is important for me as a host, is that my guests feel comfortable on my property and have the vacation that best suits them... how i can help vacillate that is one of my main goals as a hostess... as far as the house is concerned, i also present the house as if you were family coming to vacation with me... providing top quality sheets, towels for the house and pool and beach, organic soaps and shampoo's, hygiene wipes, kleenex, paper towels, toilet paper, snorkeling gear, beach mats, cooler, traveling coffee mugs and water bottles, bug sprays and so much more.. and for guests staying 5 days or more, i also stock the fridge with a welcome package including 6pk of CR Beer, Bottle of White Wine, bag of Ice, Breakfast items including Free Ranged Eggs, Bakery Fresh Bagels, butter, milk, basket of fresh Tropical fruit, CR premium Coffee, import Teas, organic cane sugar, and a ton of condiments for your cooking pleasure. (welcome package is a little different for reservations under 4 nights)... bottom line is that i try my best to provide a special home full of love and thoughtfulness for travelers, in the hopes that they have an incredible vacation and memories to last a life time... the Exterior Beauty that surrounds the Emerald Abode, and my amazing ocean views, and big star gazing nights are not of my making, but rather a blessing from Nature... what i try to do is provide a home, and an experience that reflects that beauty.. that is the least i can do for your reservation... if this sounds like a good fit for your next vacation/Honeymoon/Anniversary, connect with me.. i love sharing my little piece of paradise with wonderful happy people... i hope to hear from you soon ! cheers, april

Everything about April and Emerald Abode was extraordinary and memorable!

  • 5 of 5

From the moment we arrived, April made us feel special and well-taken care of. She thought of everything, including stocking the fridge with essentials, and offering insider tips on rum liqueur for amazing pina coladas! Her fount of knowledge about the area was so helpful- she has truly created a paradise for 2 in Emerald Abode. We tore ourselves away to ride horses, sail, hike and explore... but every evening we ended up in the plunge pool overlooking the pacific and looking up at the stars! An added attraction for us was as much doggie company as we wanted- loving, gentle and highly entertaining! If you’re thinking about going to CR, come here! You’ll thank us later...:)

Owner's Response: i can't say enough about how fortunate i have been to be the host for so many wonderful couples... the Emerald Abode was designed to accomodate 2 people in the most natural way possible.. what that means is the house is a tropical setting for you... no need for thick walls to keep out the cold, here in CR most homes are designed to let you experience nature.. that means the bedroom has 4 walls and a/c for your added comfort, but that the rest of the house is open to nature. The best thing i can offer is a unique CR experience, and i believe the house is designed just for that.. lots of privacy, lots of blue sky and big ocean views and the opportunity to see Monkeys and birds and iguana's . if you are looking for a true CR experience, come and enjoy the Emerald Abode.

Beautiful, Peaceful property. Amazing views with comfortable accommodations

  • 5 of 5

We loved this property! April had a welcome basket in the refrigerator when we arrived, as well as a stocked bathroom with anything you forgot. There is everything you need for lounging on the beach or if you are going snorkeling. April has a dossier filled with information about everything in Santa Teresa. Her recommendations for us were spot on and welcomed! The house is clean and has amazing views of the Pacific. This is a rustic home, the living areas are all outdoors, and you have to adapt to living with the jungle in your living room ( we counted 8 geckos in the house, which we welcomed because they kept the insects in check). The bedroom is the only enclosed part of the house. There was air conditioning in the bedroom, but we did not have to use it, and welcomed the sound of the waves as we fell asleep. Amazing sunsets! The road up to the house is steep and you do need 4x4. We chose to walk up and down the road to town and beach, which was strenuous, but welcome exercise for us. You need to be in relatively good shape to do this. April's dogs were delightful, well trained and made us feel safe, without intruding on our space. This is a very special property, that is not the typical vacation rental. If you are looking for a remarkable and memorable Costa Rican experience, Emerald Abode in Santa Teresa is the place for you. One of the best vacations we have had!

Owner's Response: so many of my guests comment on just how wonderful the house and property are.. i have been blessed with an incredible piece of paradise.. the house sits on a little knoll with no neighbors, so privacy is key... it is on a small hillside, so most guests have rental cars to get around town. Centrally located in the Middle of Santa Teresa and so easy to get to the neighboring villages of MalPais, Playa Hermosa and Manzanillo, all only minutes away... this couple where very athletic wanting to keep up with their personal exercise program so they enjoyed walked and hiked around, but most guests enjoy getting in some exercise when Horse back riding, or Zip Lining or hiking to the Waterfalls and Snorkeling in our Tidal Pools .. and other guests just love sitting and relaxing around the pool and house and taking in the amazing large views.. i can help organize and make reservations to personalize your vacation activities, or you are welcome to do it all yourself... the point is this area has so much to offer so many different types of people and their vacation dreams.. all are welcome to enjoy the perfect vacation at the Emerald Abode.

My FAVORITE place to stay and relax

  • 5 of 5

If your visiting Costa Rica, Santa Teresa is a must visit and I could not recommend a better place to stay. The owner, April, has done everything to make the stay comfortable and relaxing. She has lived in the area for many years and I found her recommendations and information very helpful.

The view is spectacular! Relaxing in the pool and watching the sunset is something that my wife and I will never forget.

We would recommend this place highly and will be our place to stay on our next visit.
