Overview

About the property

2 Bedroom, 1 Bath, Sleeps 3 on Lake Marion

This Scandinavian inspired beach cottage located on the banks of Lake Marion in East Marion offers water views from every angle. Situated just a 1/2 block from Gardiners Bay it’s an easy 5-minute stroll, either via beach or road, to a small, quiet community beach. But if all you’re looking for is some sand between your toes there’s a small bay beach located just steps from the front door.

The interior is awash in light with bleached wood floors and a white-washed, vaulted, wood ceiling. The furnishings are stylish and minimal with an eclectic mix of modern, Danish Modern, industrial and vintage. The living room opens out through French doors to a cozy screened porch. Throw open both doors to connect the living room and kitchen and view of the lake. The master bedroom has just what you need, a queen-sized bed with white Egyptian cotton bedding. And the back sitting room, with a small work table and daybed covered in cozy pillows, opens out through a set of French doors to a wood deck and Lake Marion. It's where you can grab a morning coffee, plan your day and watch the swans and geese go about their day. A hammock swings from the Maple tree, and a red canoe beckons to be taken for a spin. New modern appliances in the kitchen, WiFi, AC and a quiet ceiling fan, make your stay comfortable. No TV makes your stay peaceful.

It’s an easy walk or bike ride to the village market and farm-stand, and just a bit further to the local vineyard.

Stylish and casual. BlackBox is the perfect haven for a North Fork get-away for two.

A beautiful and special place

  • 5 of 5

We booked the BlackBox for our week-long summer retreat to the North Fork. The cottage looks and feels just like the photos have captured. The property is spotless and well maintained: no details are overlooked. The location is very convenient to all destinations on the eastern end of the North Fork. If you like quiet, contemplative settings this is the right place. The porches on the front and back of the cottage are perfect places to sit, dream and work on creative projects. The kitchen is well-equipped; comfortable beds and furniture; Wifi works great if you need to connect to the outside world; the cottage has air conditioning, but we never turned it on. Overlooking the lake is like having your own private bird sanctuary.

Our only caveat: while Joni has made exceptional use of a small space, it is small: the bathroom, for example, is tiny. We found all this incredibly cozy. The Danish word is "hygge." Highly recommend as a romantic getaway for two. We plan to go back!

Highly recommended! Beautiful, well-designed cottage in an idyllic setting.

  • 5 of 5

This is a beautiful cottage in an idyllic setting on a lake and a short walk to a community beach. My husband and I stayed here for a week in July and it was really the perfect getaway. The house is beautifully designed and very comfortable with high quality and thoughtful touches throughout. The deck on the back of the house is lovely and has a gorgeous, mesmerizing view of Lake Marion. We love to cook and the kitchen had everything we needed, and there was also a high quality grill in the backyard. The house is a short drive to Orient and Greenport and really anywhere on the North Fork. Joni, the owner, was lovely and very responsive to all of our queries. I'd highly recommend to anyone looking for a quiet, comfortable getaway. We will be back again!

Idyllic cottage by a lake- steps to the bay

  • 5 of 5

The cottage is beautifully located by a glittering little lake and steps from the bay and sandy beaches. The design of the home and thoughtful touches are worthy of an upscale boutique hotel. From the cottage you can easily bike to Orient/Orient Point or Greenport, for a mix of spending time in the North Fork's natural beauty or dining/shopping. I especially enjoyed taking coffee in the morning on the back deck and ending the day in the hammock by the lake and moving to the screened porch for late evening reading. Every location was designed with elegance and comfort as a top priority.

Wonderfully designed cottage on the lake

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I spent a week at the Black Box in July and had a hard time returning to city life. The interior is beautifully designed in grey and white Scandinavia meets antique sale style. There were small thoughtful touches that made everything more comfortable: tennis racquets when we'd forgotten ours, beach chairs, binoculars, and a tray to carry your drinks outside to the deck. We ditched our car most days and biked to Greenport, walked to tennis courts or the country store, or took brief canoe rides. Without a resident permit beachgoing on the North Fork can be difficult (and Lake Merion is not for swimming)--but Orient Point is open to non-residents and is not far. The view from the back den (with cozy daybed) and deck (chaise lounge) overlooking the lake was peaceful and quiet. We watched osprey dive for fish, and dozens of shore and songbirds. Despite the close proximity of neighboring houses on the residential street the house feels like a quiet coastal retreat but is very close to all the food and sightseeing of the North Shore. I would return every weekend if I could.

Perfect!

  • 5 of 5

Staying at Joni's house was the most wonderful experience and perfect antidote to living in Beijing, China for the past 2 years. The house and location were amazing and Joni responded very quickly to any questions. I would rent this house again in a second. We spent three amazing weeks there and I wish it had been longer. The lake is wonderful for canoeing and the bay is just down the street for a quick morning or sunset dip. The house is well appointed with everything you need and is airy and light. I dream about sitting on the back deck with my morning coffee and watching the swan family swim by. The photos in this listing are 100% representative of the house and it's surroundings. It was so nice to be at a place that you felt comfortable in immediately, which made the entire stay perfect! Thank you!

Peaceful getaway

  • 5 of 5

My wife and I thoroughly enjoyed our week at the house, and in the quiet town of East Marion. It was our first time in the North Fork and we couldn't have picked a better base to experience the area. Joni's background in design clearly shows through--seldom does a locale so well approximate the photos advertising it. Though a small space, the top to bottom renovation smartly makes the best use of the three rooms. And the many windows and open doors created enough of a cross breeze that the air conditioning wasn't necessary during most of our trip. Though we did explore the surrounding villages (especially Greenport), we were just as happy to lounge around at the black box and cook in its kitchen. It couldn't have been more comfortable, and Joni is extraordinarily accommodating.
