WHERE THE MAD RIVER MEETS THE PACIFIC SURF: The Whale's Tale Cabin is a cozy bungalow style cottage sitting on the bluff overlooking the mouth of the Mad River as it meets the crashing breakers of the Pacific Ocean. From the western rooms and deck visitors can enjoy whale watching, viewing the myriad of wildlife on the Mad River, and just relax, taking in all the beauty that nature has to offer.

The Whales Tale Cabin is a home built in the 1960's situated in an eclectic neighborhood of million dollar view homes mixed with modest residences in the small community of McKinleyville just a few short miles north of Arcata off of Highway 101. To maintain the cozy mood of a cabin we have maintained the rustic feel of that time period while presenting an impeccably clean and comfortable ambiance with simple furnishings. There are three bedrooms, one very comfortable King Bed, one very comfortable Queen bed, and Two Twins. There is a wood burning fireplace for ambiance. (Bring your own firewood or Duraflame logs; the furnace provides great heat). It is a very short drive to gain access to the beaches and there is no direct beach access from the cabin. Several Redwood groves and parks are very close. There is a flat screen TV in the Living Room and one in the Master Bedroom, with basic cable service; and an old boom box to play CD's., and a DVD player. There is also free WiFi to keep you connected with the 21st Century.

The quiet and secluded cabin is near downtown Mckinleyville, with a full service cinema, restaurants, and shops. The picturesque fishing village of Trinidad with its famous lighthouse is just ten minutes to the north. Parents and visitors to Humboldt State University are only 10 minutes from the campus. Nearby are gorgeous beaches, Patrick's Point State Park, Redwoods, hiking trails, and the artsy old-style lumber town of Arcata is just 10 minutes south. The Whale's Tale provides an exquisitely serene, relaxing, and private break from the usual mad rush of our hectic lifestyles. Call or E-mail for information.

DRIVING DIRECTIONS AND GREAT INFORMATION: In order to protect the privacy and security of guests, and your booking we will provide driving directions, lock box code, information on beaches and parks from a local's perspective, and other good information that will enhance the enjoyment of your stay. About Richard

We grew up in Arcata and Blue Lake and love the ocean, beaches, and Redwoods of Humboldt County. Among the owners are a chiropractor, and a school administrator, an orthodontist, and a retired school psychologist. We all have grandchildren, but remember, 60 is the new 40 (or something like that).

Richard purchased this house in 2005

Why Richard chose North Coast

The views are fabulous and the river amazingly alive with wildlife; we keep the Whales Tale Cabin immaculate, and the value is great. Truly a "one of a kind" property. Very private. Very comfortable. Very cozy.

What makes this house unique

Incredibly Private, Serene, Relaxing, I think the best views within miles, Comfortable, Convenient Location far enough away and yet close enough to conveniences.

Guestbook comments from the owner

Before the whole glow faded, I wanted to write and tell you how very much we enjoyed our time at Whales Tale. I wished we had another day or two there. What an amazing view! And such a lovely, comfortable house. The weather was absolutely perfect, raining one night and clear and bright during the days. We woke yesterday morning to a double rainbow over the dunes. Thank you so much for allowing us bring our dog along and for sharing your cabin. You are a lucky man to own that place. I think I'd never leave if I did!

All best wishes, Joanne

Stunning sunsets, fun days, restful nights!

  • 5 of 5

Arrived later than we'd planned, just after sunset, but walked in to a still-colorful and dramatic sky out the big beautiful back windows that took our breath away! We could feel stress melting away as we settled into this lovely spot for a few days. Like so many others, we loved the view and enjoyed exploring Patrick's Point, area beaches, and the shops of Arcata's darling square. That said,

I wanted to share some aspects that really landed this home in the outstanding category for our family. Beds and linens VERY comfortable. Clean, clean, clean. Everything we could ever need kitchen-wise. Giant fluffy towels for the fantastic hot tub. Nicely appointed, warm, inviting - feels like a beloved family beach house, which it exactly what it is - where you come to relax and reconnect. Not too big, not too small - JUST RIGHT. Owner is friendly and responsive. Easy parking for our trailer during our stay. Dog friendly. Quiet neighborhood. Good wifi. Great for a family, but would work for couples or friends looking to get away. I'm already trying to figure out how to get back here by myself or with a friend for an art and writing retreat!

Outstanding.

Delightful, pristine, well appointed, comfortable, in a stunning setting overlooking the river and the ocean. Quiet, hearing only the sea. Wildlife. Sitting in the hot tub overlooking this was sublime. Fireplace cosy. House well tended and clean. Owner is gracious and friendly. We had a wonderful stay and highly recommend.

Truly 5 Stars!

  • 5 of 5

Hi Richard,

Returned yesterday evening from some very special days in Humboldt County!

We enjoyed our time at the Whale’s Tale very much – it was so comfortable and completely relaxing. We found the view out the back ever changing and mesmerizing! In addition to beautiful cloud formations, roaring sea, and tidal changes in the river, we enjoyed watching an osprey perch on the big dead tree that rises from the river bottom. We were also amazed and surprised as we watched a school of salmon come up the river – some of them coming almost completely out of the water. And while not completely certain that we saw otters – we definitely did watch two furry mammals swimming in the river. They were a ways off so maybe they were just muskrats --but a quick look up on Google said that otters do inhabit the lower reaches of the Mad River -- so maybe.

When we arrived Tuesday afternoon the forecast told us we had only Wednesday to enjoy outdoor activities but, instead, the storm held off until Saturday morning! We hiked in the redwood forest in Prairie Creek State Park, searched for agates at Agate Beach, took a long walk at extreme low tide at Clam Beach, took some special photos at Luffenholtz Beach, and walked a stretch of the Hammond Trail. We visited some shops in Arcata and Trinidad and one of our favorites experiences was walking along misty trails in the Arcata Community Forest.

We tried to take in as much as possible over just a few days and it was really great coming ‘home’ at the end of an adventurous day and enjoying the peacefulness and serenity of your lovely home. We want to come back!!

Owner's Response: Thank you for your kind review. Your words expressed the magical feeling my wife and I got when we first entered the cabin 11 years ago and "had to make it ours." We love sharing it with our guests.
