Overview

About the property

Lovely Apartment Adjacent To Taughannock Falls State Park and Cayuga Lake.

This cozy second floor apartment is next to Taughannock Falls State Park, which has the highest single drop waterfall in the Northeastern United States (33 feet higher than Niagara Falls). The location is perfect for outdoor activities including hiking the gorge trails and the newly completed Black Diamond Trail (which runs from Trumansburg to Ithaca along a former train route), biking, swimming, kayaking, stand-up paddle boarding, boating, and fishing. Hiking the nature trails along the gorges, which are up to 400' high, provides panoramic and dramatic views of the gorges formed by the ice age. Minutes from the Cayuga Wine Trail, which includes scenic wineries, distilleries, cideries and breweries. There are great restaurants nearby, many featuring free live music. Only ten miles to Ithaca and to Watkins Glen, across the road from beautiful Taughannock Stream that flows into the waterfall. You can hear the soothing sounds of the stream as you doze off to sleep. Peaceful surroundings and beautiful gardens. Saturday summertime lakefront outdoor concerts at Taughannock Park.

Newly renovated smaller second floor apartment in owner's country home, clean and comfortable, perfect for 1-2 people. The bedroom has a new queen size mattress, solid Amish-made oak dresser plus air conditioner. The cheerful sunroom/dining room has a cypress wood table and chairs (handmade by local Amish craftsmen) and looks out over the trees and expansive grounds. We call the apartment the Eagles Nest, since it sits above the magnolia trees and overlooks large silver maple and black walnut trees and several flower gardens. There's a fully equipped kitchen with refrigerator, oven and range, coffee maker, toaster and microwave. In addition there's a newly tiled bathroom, a den with two chairs and flat screen DirectTV with 63 channels and second air conditioner, a walk-in closet, and wireless internet connection. Linens, towels and soft cotton bedding and blankets are supplied, and several Metropolitan Museum of Art reproductions hang on the walls. Close to the quaint village of Trumansburg which offers boutique and art gallery shops, excellent restaurants, a large grocery store and liquor store, pharmacy, natural foods store and deli, bank, beautiful public library, new bowling alley and laundromat. The house was formerly owned by Robert Moog, who invented the synthesizer, and who invited many famous musicians to the home, i.e. the Beatles and Emerson, Lake and Palmer. The house will be included in an upcoming documentary about the life of Bob Moog, scheduled to be released this year.

Please note that this is a second floor apartment (as shown in the photos) and there are stairs leading up to the private entrance.

About Loretta Heimbuch

Retired graphic artist/teacher, originally from New Jersey and so grateful to now be living in the beauty of the Finger Lakes region of upstate NY.

Loretta Heimbuch purchased this apartment in 1977

Why Loretta Heimbuch chose Cayuga Lake

Bought this house in 1977 from Moog synthesizer inventor/musician Bob Moog who was moving to North Carolina to celebrate his break from the corporate world. Loved this house at first sight - and the incredible beauty of the Finger Lakes' gorges and waterfalls nearby.

What makes this apartment unique

Ideal location, next to the beauty of Taughannock Falls State Park and it's amazing waterfalls and breathtaking hiking trails, two minute drive to Cayuga Lake with water access and swimming beach, across the road from the stream that flows into the 215' waterfall, and midway between Ithaca and the 20+ wineries of the Cayuga Lake Wine trail and Finger Lakes wine country. Not to mention all the wineries on nearby Seneca and Keuka Lakes.

Quiet comfort

  • 5 of 5

The Moog House was perfect for our stay in Trumansburg. The apartment had everything we needed and the views of the garden and quiet countryside were relaxing. We found the blend of new and old to be charming. The owner was helpful in getting us settled. Would highly recommend this to anyone looking for a quiet spot to stay with nearby Taughannock Falls and other beautiful outdoor activities.

Great place to stay.

  • 5 of 5

We loved the location and the apartment up in the trees. Views from the apt (second floor) were enhanced by the nine (!) new single hung windows that opened. The breezes were great. A separate living area allowed for one to watch tv or read while the other slept. A well equipped little kitchen met our needs. Til next time. Thanks Loretta and Steve.

Very nice apartment!

  • 5 of 5

I enjoyed very much my stay - the apartment is clean with plenty of space for one - nicely cozy for two i imagine. I am a musician - and there was even ample space to set up my keyboard in the sunroom - Loretta, the owner, kindly welcomed the music, so i could play a few hours a day without worrying about using headphones - thanks Loretta!. The area is very quiet - i slept very well in the comfortable bed and enjoyed being awakened by a chorus of birdsong. It's a wonderful area to explore, with Taughannock Falls State Park's entrance a five minute walk from the apartment, and Ithaca about a twenty minute ride south along Cayuga lake. Watkins Glen with it's remarkable Gorge is about a thirty minute drive to the southwest. If you would like to explore this beautiful part of the country, for an individual or a couple i think this is a great place to make your home base.

Thanks Loretta!

Enjoyed our stay!

  • 5 of 5

We really enjoyed our stay at this quaint upstairs apartment. We came to the finger lakes for a wedding and found there weren't many places to stay in this particular area, but came across this listing. There was enough room for us and I was extra delighted to find a coffeemaker and some coffee in the pantry. The place was comfortable and had everything we needed. The property was quite lovely and also a quick walk to the Taughannock State parked where we hiked to see a waterfall. Our host, Loretta was flexible with our arrival and departure time and had a nice book of local businesses, places to eat and attraction which we found quite helpful. Thanks again.

Very quiet and serene

  • 5 of 5

The host was right on time, both very easy people to like!... As soon as you get of of your vehicle , your greated by fresh air and the sound of rushing river water. The apartment was clean, well stocked and cozy. The location and its views are spectacular I'd highly recommend it for hikers and bird enthusiast, every morning there's incredible birdsong. There's trout below the waterfall.

Tired in Trumansburg

  • 2 of 5

I did not sleep well at all during our stay because the bed was very uncomfortable. It was a thin mattress on wooden slats with no box spring. It leaned to one side and it felt like you were falling out. The chairs in the small living room were not comfortable either. The stairs that you had to climb to get to the apartment were very steep and dangerous. Near Taughannock Falls and close to Ithaca, but really needs improvements made to the property.

Owner's Response: We're sorry to hear that you didn't enjoy your stay and that you weren't able to sleep well. It is a platform bed with a new mattress, and we have never had any other negative feedback about the bed. We always accompany every guest up the stairs and suggest they easily prop open the outside door as they bring luggage up. There is also a photo of the stairs on the website. We appreciate your feedback and we hope you have a better stay the next time you visit the Finger Lakes.
