About Thomas Ring

We are a family from Germany and live permanently in Ecuador since 2002.

We own another vacation rental (4Volcanoes Villa) which I manage, my wife works as family therapist and in equine therapy. We love living close to nature, with cultural experiences and of course sunshine all year round! Our three boys are born in this wonderful country and homeschooled - we truly love our way of life here. As former buisness consultants and managers of the award winning Hacienda Zuleta hotel, we know the hospitality industry quite well - take advantage of our contacts and insights!

Thomas Ring purchased this cottage in 2009

Why Thomas Ring chose Ecuador

San Pablo is an authentic village in a quiet rural setting, only 50 miles from the capital Quito and with endless activities within 1 hour driving around the house. The climate is perfect - Sunshine on 350 days of the year

What makes this cottage unique

The area is perfect for outdoor activities, shopping, there are restaurants close by and the cultural experience offered is amazing.

A perfect day: get up with the first rays of sun and hike up the Imbabura volcano. Come back, have a late breakfast on the terrace. Watch the horses in training. Later a trip to Otavalo, some crafts shopping, visit a cultural event or just watch the people at the plaza. Grab some fruit at the market and head for early dinner towards the lake, for a beautiful dining experience with sunset view at the shore. When home, you can count the stars of both hemisperes. Tomorrow you can do a trail ride and have tea time at a colonial hacienda. And change your flights - stay a little longer!

We named the house 4 Volcanoes Cottage because of its unique setting. Located at 2.600m in the northern Andes of Ecuador and within a 5 minute walk from the main plaza of the rural village of San Pablo del Lago, we are surrounded by 4 majestic peaks of (extinct) volcanoes: Imbabura, Cusin, snowcapped Cotacachi and the Mojanda rim.

Its just a 1,5 hour drive from Quito international airport, and yet another world. Indigenous walk their cows and sheep to the grazing field every morning. The land is worked the old fashioned way and fresh mountain air clears your senses.

We have renowned hotels with an excellent restaurant offer within a 10 minute drive and some of Ecuador´s major tourist attractions such as famous Otavalo market or Cuicocha crater lagoon are just 30 minutes away.

Perfect for families

  • 5 of 5

Outstanding. My wife, my two daughters (5&2) and I stayed for a month at this wonderful home in San Pablo this winter. After a tiring flight to Ecuador and a crowded taxi ride, I can't express the relief we felt when Thomas gave us the welcoming tour of the home. My wife looked at me and said "this is much nicer than the pictures on the web!" She was right. It is hard to get an accurate picture of what this place looks like until you are actually there, but you will not be disappointed. Just lovely. We felt completely safe the entire time there. Inside the walls of the property, our children freely played in the gardens and walkways. They loved riding bikes and playing with Thomas and Christina's three sons. San Pablo is just a short, safe walk away, where there is a vegetable market and numerous small stores that carried almost everything we needed for food for our trip. We did not have a car, and we relied solely on buses and taxis to travel the surrounding area. The bus goes directly by the gate of the property, making for a convenient ride to Otavalo and beyond. Thomas, Christina and their family were kind and hospitable, making us feel at home. We peppered them with questions, and they were always patient and helpful. They were laid back and relaxed, and made it easy for us as parents to relax also. Our 2 year old, Adalee, in the course of her many adventures, broke no less than 3 of their dishes, and peeled a wall decal off the wall during nap time. Thomas and Christina responded with a shrug of the shoulder. If you are traveling with children, look no further than this property. We can't wait to visit the Ring family, Antonio and Yolanda (the gardeners), James, Phophie and Bonnie (los perros) and their beautiful hacienda again.

Unique Mini Hacienda

  • 5 of 5

We absolutely loved our stay in Lagos de San Pablo. Thomas, Christina, and the boys made us feel at home. We rented their mini hacienda for a month. The layout is unique. Our lodging was made up of three buildings with a center courtyard. The master bedroom and bath were in one building with a fireplace, very romantic. The living room and another bathroom were in a second building where Internet was the strongest. The fully equipped kitchen, dining room, 2 more bedrooms, and a bathroom were in the final building. The attention to detail within the building was incredible. Thomas and Christina were extremely helpful with directions, advice, lining up a taxi to and from the airport, planning Galapagos, and placing calls to the vet in Ibarra. Our dogs loved running around the large walled property shared with the 4Volcanoes Villa. There was surprisingly little noise considering the closeness to the road. Once the locked property gate was closed you forgot the road was there. We had secure parking for our vehicle within their yard. We often left our room unlocked since the property was so secure. We walked to town often to buy groceries and some ready-made meals (ask about the roasted chicken). It was a short drive to Otavalo and just a bit farther to Cotacachi and Ibarra. We have been traveling through South America for 2 years and are already planning to stay with them again.

Lovely home for garden lovers

  • 5 of 5

We have rented many nice homes in Europe, Asia and South America but this one was special. There is a fish tank in the living room, a cat on your window board, and a cute little dog on your door mat. The home is much more beautiful than the pictures depict, every room has little colorful details and lots of storage space. Our hosts came up with little details such as a jar of their homemade honey, fresh flowers and a fruit basket, once we had an internet problem and they fixed it within minutes. The location is perfect, walking distance to the village yet a private oasis with spectacular gardens, all with a view of the surrounding volcanoes. We had a rental car but you could easily move around by bus. The owners were staying in the next-door villa which I understand they are also renting out sometimes, but we hardly saw them and had absolute privacy. There is also a little patio garden which is completely private.

Absolutely amazing, a trip I will never forget

  • 5 of 5

From exploring the nearby towns of San Pablo Del Lago, Otavalo, and Ibarra, to hiking to the top of the Imbabura volcano, to spending time at the beautiful 4VolcanosLodge with the Incredible Ring family, I have to say that my visit here was my absolute favorite experience through 6 months in South America. Even though I am not as confident in my ability to speak Spanish as I would like to be, Thomas, Christina, and the boys (Noah, Luca, and Elias) speak English as well as Spanish and German very well. The environment is peaceful, relaxing, and beautiful. Great place for travelers to just relax and enjoy or to spend as much time as desired exploring or interacting with the culture. Thank you very, very much to the Ring Family and I hope to see you again soon.

What a fantastic month in Ecuador: we will never forget :-)

  • 5 of 5

We stayed at 4 Volcanoes for a month and it exceeded our expectations! The property itself is exactly as portrayed in the photographs and, if anything, is more beautiful in person. Thomas and Christina were wonderful hosts and our 8 year old son loved playing with their boys! We especially loved the hike with Leo and Luca to the secret waterfall! After staying in Quito for a couple of days, 4Volcanoes was absolutely heaven. We loved sitting out on the patio, taking win the beautiful views of the lake and Imbabura volcanoe. Everything in the home was extremely comfortable. We loved our stay here and will definitely be back!

perfect family destination

  • 5 of 5

This was a dream come true. We had just embaruqed on a half year journey through SA and made this house our first stop. I wanted my kid to practice spanish with their boys and to get used to the climate and all in a quiet environment. thomas and Christina were so helpful with their insight and made us feel so welcome and "home".

We spent hours just hanging out at the horses, one day I took all the childred to Cucocha lake on a boart ride. We had a blast!

Thanks Leo for your guiding. You are amazing! It was so das when we had to leave but we feel we have made friends for a lifetime.
