About the property

Great Views Of The Lighthouse And Bay!!!

Summer weekly booking schedule is FRIDAY to FRIDAY: June 23, 2017, to September 8, 2017. All other times a two night minimum. (There is one shorter period currently available if you are looking for less than 7 nights during summer - Jul 30 to Aug 4 (5 nights). Please send an inquiry email if you wish to book the 5 nights.) For all other bookings you may make a reservation request click on the "Request to Book."

The Bay Watch Cabin has an awesome view to the lighthouse, West Bay and out to Lake Superior. New flooring this year throughout, and some new appliances, fixtures and furniture. Comfortable bed covers, club chairs and colorful rugs are part of the cabin's decor. The Bay Watch Cabin was built in the 60s, and is comfortable and homey with a slight retro feel.

Relax in the Adirondack chairs around the fire pit in the back yard while cooking your steaks on the charcoal park grill a few feet away. The Bay Watch Cabin's deck is great for relaxing and taking in the view with a cocktail or morning coffee, or for having a romantic evening dinner.

It is just a short walk to the center of town, and the beach access road is only about 100 yards to the west (there is also another road to the beach to the east). The Bay Watch Cabin is set back only one lot from the beachfront, and on the bay side of the road. So, no houses or road in your view to the lake.

The Bay Watch Cabin is a compact 2 bedroom and 1 bath cabin. The bedrooms are large and the cabin is well appointed for a short or long-term stay. The master bedroom has a queen size bed, and bedroom 2 has a full/twin bunk bed.

So, whether you are a family of 4 or 5, or two couples, this would suit you well. At Bay Watch Cabin the beds are all made up for you and the bath linen, kitchen linen and kitchen items are all onsite ready for your use.

The Bay Watch also has an additional fold out bed and a queen futon. These can be made up for additional guests for a small additional fee. See the guest guide below to get an idea of how it could feel with additional guests.

The kitchen is compact with a full size fridge and a new gas electronic range. The laundry has a stacked front loader washer and dryer for your use. The house also has a large gas heater which easily caters to the whole home.

The living room comes appointed with a flat screen television, cable television, queen futon chair, and two club chairs. There are also a variety of DVDs, and games for adults and children, to use for those times when you are indoors or just want to relax.

At various times each day at the Bay Watch Cabin you will hear the Catholic Church chime their lovely songs across Grand Marais. Come and take in the peaceful surrounds of Grand Marais with one awesome view.

CHANGE OVER DAY: From late June to early September weekly (7 nights) bookings from Friday to Friday. All other times a 2 night minimum with change over day open.

OPEN: Currently open from May to early November. Closed early November through April (subject to weather). Feel free to inquire.

INTERNET: No WiFi in the Bay Watch Cabin. Free WiFi internet available at various places around town, including (subject to change without notice) at the Diner a short distance away and at the Grand Marais Outfitters in town.

2 renters = perfect size

4 renters = almost perfect size except you'll have to share a bathroom

5 renters = getting a little tight as 3 people will share a bedroom, and only 1 bathroom

6 renters = you'll need at least one additional sleeping item made up ($30 per item), and the bathroom use will be a little inconvenient, plus there will not be enough living room and dining room seats for all

7-8 renters = all beds and extra bedding filled to capacity, additional sleeping item makeups needed (1 fold out and 1 futon available @$30 per item), inconvenient bathroom use, and not enough seating

9 renters = can't do it

Ten things to do around Grand Marais:

1. Visit the local restaurants: The West Bay Diner (you will wait for your food, but it is good), The Sportsmans (a real U.P. feel to it), The Dunes Saloon (the local watering hole with some really good pizza), the Breakwall Bakery and Cafe (the newest restaurant in town).

2. Swim at East Bay or West Bay beaches.

3. Walk Agate Beach from the lighthouse to Sable Falls. Or walk along the road to Sable Falls west along Carlson Street and H-58, then down the side of the falls, and back to the Lake Street in town.

4. Walk the trails both east and west of Grand Marais.

5. Visit the Agate Museum and other antique and gift shops in town.

6. Thursday night is farmers' market in the town park - locals sell their homegrown and homemade goods - there are some excellent cooks living in Grand Marais.

7. See Dennis/Kim at the Grand Marais Outfitters to organize or rent a kayak, a four wheeler, or a charter boat tour/fishing expedition.

8. Visit the log slide lookout about 13 miles west of Grand Marais off H-58.

9. Visit Pictured Rocks that is about 40 minutes west of Grand Marais off H-58.

10. Use the grill on the grass area, cook your steaks, sit on your deck and enjoy your steak with a cocktail or soda while looking out at the lighthouse and water.

FROM H-77 - Travel on h-77 toward Grand Marais, go down the hill into town, turn right on Randolph St and continue on veering to the right onto Grand Marais Avenue. Follow Grand Marais Avenue for about 500 feet, and the cabin is on the left about 100 feet after the Catholic Church.

FROM H-58: Travel into town along H-58 (turns into to Carlson Street when you enter Grand Marais. Cross H-77/Main Street and head toward the bay and then swing to the right and follow Grand Marais Avenue for about 600 feet, and the cabin is on the left about 100 feet after the Catholic Church.

(If the Bay Watch Cabin is unavailable for you please check out Anchor House #682005, the Ridge Road Cabin #294031, or the Bay Cabin #421494)

Great experience

  • 4 of 5

Our vacation was wonderful! The breeze off the harbor was amazing and we sat on the deck and watched herons fly in, and people boat in the harbor. We drove 2 minutes to watch a fantastic sunset every night and our grandson swam at various wonderful beaches. Glad we brought a lot of food because there were only a couple of restaurants in Grand Marais. Drove to Munising and Whitefish Bay, each an hour from Grand Marais. Wonderful time!!

About what we expected

  • 3 of 5

We stayed two nights as a base for touring the Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore and found this cabin to be about what we expected. It's a bit dated and small, but it was fine for my cousin and I as a base to sleep each night. We didn't cool any meals, but the kitchen was suitable. Large washer & dryer. It was not a place we would want to hang out all day, but that's why you go to the area -- to get outdoors.

Grand Marais is a tiny town, so the choices are not that many. The view of Lake Superior off the deck and from the living room/kitchen is very nice (though the bugs are super aggressive outside). The cabin is a short 10-minute walk from the town and marina area, where you can find all the basics (cafe, brew pub, provisions, etc.). Pictured Rocks is spectacular and a great place to spend a day or several enjoying the sights, hiking, kayaking, etc.

Owner's Response: We are sorry to hear that you found the cabin and Grand Marais only sufficient for your visit to the pictured rocks area. We appreciate that you indicate that the cabin is what you expected because we try to describe it accurately in the description and photos. We haven't yet posted photos with the new range, rugs and curtains or the recent additions of a fire pit and new grill but we expect to do that before next season. We also appreciate you advising guests about the some of the Upper Peninsula bugs and want people to realize that early in the summer season you will find some additional insects in the area, but as the season progresses they do lessen and are minimal in the fall.

Frequent UP visitor

  • 5 of 5

The Bay Watch cabin was wonderful. Great view of the bay and Lake Superior, where we watched freighters both day and night. Close and convenient to town, Pictured Rocks, Munising, etc... We have stayed in Grand Marais previously, which is a quaint UP town. We really enjoyed our stay and would definitely consider staying here again if/when we return to the UP.

Bay Watch Cabin

  • 4 of 5

We loved our stay in Grand Marais. We liked the cabin very much. The only minor concerns we had that are very fixable were that based on the cabins age, it was very musty when we first arrived, so the windows being opened before guest arrival will minimize this. Second is the age and condition of the folding beach chairs, which were unusable. On the positive side, the cabin is very well located and has a great view. The caretaker is excellent and very responsive. We would stay here again!

Owner's Response: Thank you for your helpful comments and we are glad you enjoyed your stay. We take all notes and comments seriously and strive to address them appropriately. The Bay Watch Cabin was built in the late 1960s. It is possible we may have trapped the moisture from the cleaning in the home by closing it up after the cleaning and we will look at the leaving one or more windows open in the future, subject to weather. We will be happy to replace the beach chairs at our earliest opportunity. Thanks again for the suggestions, and for staying at the Bay Watch Cabin. Come back again soon!
