The whole property borders Acadia National Park, has no immediate neighbors, and provides a peaceful, private experience that you will want to come back to year after year. Towels, toilet paper, and all kitchen cookware/dishes are provided for you convenience. Tenants will need to provide their own toiletries and food. About Penelope Heiges

I grew up in Otter Creek and have many wonderful memories here. I knew that this would be a wonderful place to raise our kids. I built this house from the ground up in 1997 and raised my two girls there until they were school age. I have since joined the military and am moving around the country but continue to cherish the memories that we had in this house. We hope that you make as many wonderful memories during your vacation and enjoy it's peaceful setting as much as we did.

Penelope Heiges purchased this house in 1997

Why Penelope Heiges chose Otter Creek

This property has been in my family's possession for several decades and was given to me to build my family home on. We cherish the privacy and tranquility that we experienced here each and every day. We have made many family hikes on local mountains using our home as a starting point and taking the free Park bus home. The village of Otter Creek is a great spot in the middle of all the amenities that Acadia National Park has to offer with a small playground down the street, a seasonal market, and phenomenal restaurant.

What makes this house unique

The kitchen and outside spaces make this house. The kitchen is spacious, with lots of counter space and hand-made cabinets to create your culinary specialties. The outside areas contain multiple granite rock-walled gardens with rock taken from the property left from the last glacier. The tiered gardens in the center of the driveway contain lots of beautiful perennial gardens and a winding pathway. We are working to restore the perennial gardens and outside of the house after years of being away but they will be stunning once done.

Great spot to enjoy Acadia and Bar Harbor from!

  • 5 of 5

A big house with everything you could need to enjoy Acadia and Bar Harbor! Cozy and private but only minutes from the park and the downtown area. The house has all sorts of fun games from board games, to karaoke, to pool table, darts, air hockey, etc. The stars at night are beautiful as well! Would definitely recommend!

fall get away!!!

  • 5 of 5

My wife and I invited 4 friends along on our annual trip to Acadia. The trip was amazing thanks in large part to the fabulous house we got to come back to at the end of the day.

The house was absolutely perfect in every way, the only bad part was leaving Acadia and this wonderful house at the end of the trip.

The perfect place to stay!

  • 5 of 5

What an amazing location for people who love to hike, have fun and eat great food! Penelope's place borders Acadia National Park so it was so nice to be able to walk out the front door to begin a couple of our day hikes. On one of our days we left the cottage at 4:15am and walked to the trailhead of Cadillac Mountain in our quest to hike to the summit to enjoy a sunrise by 6:30am. We got there in time and it was stunning! There is plenty of space for couples or families and it is well equipped. We highly recommend this location. Thank you Penelope.

Great home. Great location.

  • 5 of 5

Terrific place to stay on MDI. Acadia is right there practically in the backyard of the house and Bar Harbor is 10 mins away. Hard to find a better location anywhere! The house itself is just as others have described it. Comfortable, familiar, spacious and quiet. The owner, Penelope, is lovely and so easy to communicate with and you can tell she really wants the renters to be happy. We found a great hidden gem, Seal Harbor, very close to the house that is a rocky little beach to swim in and it was beautiful! All in all a great vacation experience for my family. I wish I was there right now!

Lovely home close to Cadillac

  • 5 of 5

Well kept and very well equipped home, tucked in the woods and away from the road. Nice outdoor seating areas and fire pit. Quick walk to both the Otter Creek store (s'more supplies!) and Southridge trail and an easy drive to other parts of Acadia, Seal Harbor, and Bar Harbor. Highly recommend staying here!

Cincinnati, Ohio

Gorgeous, quiet, retreat far enough away for tranquility, but only a short drive into Bar Harbor.

The pictures do no justice. We put 7 of our family in this house, and there was plenty of space for everyone. There was no cell phone service (which I personally loved), but there is strong wifi and a LAN line if you need to make a call. I slept in the second room with the queen bed with my husband and the bed was so comfortable. Plenty of towels, blankets, and pillows for everyone to be clean and comfy. Everywhere you turn there is something to occupy time on a rainy day or low key afternoon (air hockey, pool, darts, foosball, books galore, more board games and puzzles than you could imagine, karaoke machine). The patio area by the grill and nearby fire pit was the perfect place to relax during and after dinner. The house is only a short drive to the most popular attractions on the island, as well as to the beach. We stopped at Walmart in Ellsworth to stock up on groceries and toiletries on our way in from the airport (which saved us so much money). We did find a few spices hanging around that had been left by prior renters, but I would recommend grabbing your own to be safe. We had a delicious lobster bake with 5 enormous lobsters purchased from Biels in Southeast Harbor. (Note: the shell crackers are kept in the dining room on the hutch with all of lobster related kitchenware. We found them after the fact which made cracking those 4-5lb, exceptionally hard shelled lobsters so difficult we had to go primitive and use a rock and the ground- hilarious story for our trip, and still delicious!) The family excitedly attempted the whale watching boat, but beware- if you don't have your sea legs you will get sick on this. We drove up to the summit of Cadillac Mountain for sunrise, and very much enjoyed the nature tour boat ride out of Bass Harbor (the education on the lobster industry in Maine is fascinating!)

My family was so sad to leave the house, and everyone has requested we stay here again. I highly recommend this rental!

This house is located in the village of Otter Creek. Access to a free bus system for Acadia National Park is a short walk down the street which will take you to all corners of the island. You can walk from the house 15 minutes through the woods to Otter Creek Cove and connect to multiple hiking trails nearby. We used to hike all day and then take the bus home from Bar Harbor, after ice cream, of course. No cars needed once you get to the house. An absolutely outstanding restaurant, The Burning Tree, is located right down the street as well as a small summer market. The Southridge Trail of Cadillac Mountain is located a short walk up the street. This is a moderate slope, 3 mile hike with gorgeous views to the top of Cadillac Mountain, known to be the first spot in the United States that the sun touches every morning. You can also drive to the summit of Cadillac Mountain via the Park Loop Road where you can watch the sun set over phenomenal views. The shopping in Bar Harbor is great with multiple unique shops and restaurants. The hiking, carriage trails, whale watching, and boat tours are the real draw. The island is perfect for outdoor activities and enjoying nature. Our house will help you get in a zen mood with its peaceful, private setting. Wi-Fi is available in the house. Enjoy it as much as we have!
