A Truly Welcoming Stay in Barbados – Felt Like Home! I had such a wonderful experience staying with Alan and Sonia during my solo trip to Barbados. From the moment I arrived, Alan and Sonia made me feel completely welcome. They were incredibly warm and genuinely caring. The accommodation itself was cozy and comfortable and had everything I needed to feel at home. It was the perfect base for exploring the island. I especially appreciated being able to stay in touch via WhatsApp while I was out and about—they were always just a text message away. Alan was also very quick to respond with any questions I had. Their local recommendations for nearby restaurants were spot on! Every place they recommended was a hit, and it really added to the richness of my trip. I can’t thank them enough for their kindness and hospitality. If you’re looking for a clean, comfortable place to stay with hosts who go above and beyond, this is it. I’d return in a heartbeat!

The property is located on the south coast just 14 min from the airport. And no traffic which can be heavy in Oistins and Bridgetown - you will want to visit these locations for groceries and more selection of restaurants but here at Cheez don Bread you will be living with the locals. I really liked that. I rented a small car from the host (which is needed for groceries and sight seeing). I am not used to driving on the left side so that took some getting used to. Pot holes are huge so have your co-pilot not only remind you to be left - but also slow down or go around huge craters. Note: round-abouts are clockwise here. If you are used to North American driving this is the biggest lesson to get used to. Property is at the end of a private street with the ocean just 50 yards away. You can hear the ocean and the tree frogs throughout the night. And Jack the grey parrot in the morning. Delightful. Miami Beach (locals call it Enterprise Beach) is just a 10 min drive. Beautiful sandy beach with two chaise lounges and umbrella available for 20 USD or 40 Bajan. Park at the beginning of Enterprise Drive as turning around can be difficult later as the road becomes one lane. Showers and washrooms are at the end of this road. The host family is absolutely lovely. You will find the communication top notch and very timely. Alan and Sonia can arrange everything you want to do on the island: surfing, island tours or private taxi. Highly recommend.

Wonderful Hosts

Beautiful secluded hideaway, Alan and Sonja were wonderful and helpful. We would recommend their car rental to explore the island, pick up and drop off to airport and reasonable prices. Clean, safe, and close driving to all amenities, don't forget their rental car!

Our hosts were perfect. The place was really clean with lots of good information about the island. Only negative for us, as we do enjoy chilling at home, is we found the property too dark. Otherwise perfect. Quiet and away from the tourist areas but also close enough if needed. Thank to such lovely hosts

Lovely stay in Barbados

Alan and Sonia are wonderful hosts. They were helpful with providing instructions and helpful tips about the local area. There place is quiet and away from the hustle and bustle of being in the city. Beautiful beaches and good surf spots are nearby, within a short drive. We loved Barbados and will definitely be back!

Fantastic get away from it all hideaway on the south coast

Brilliant stay, lovely apartment, very well equipped and private, just off a gorgeous wild and empty beach for great morning walks. Alan and Sonia were lovely hosts- we indulged in a great surf lesson with Alan and had a memorable few hours dodging the turtles in nearby Freights Bay! Would thoroughly recommend a stay here as a counter to the busy hotels and beaches of the west coast - you need a car to get around but well worth it and a great base to explore from.

A big thank you to Alan and Sonia for hosting us. The communication from them was great. They gave us some great advice in relation to restaurants, shops and beaches. I can't wait to go back and to enjoy this lush tropical beautiful space. The casita was spotless and fully equipped with everything we could imagine. The hosts were great, they responded immediately to any questions we had, their manner and personalities were just lovely and open and friendly. I could hear the ocean when I woke up and I meditated every day to the lush sound of waves. It was like a small piece of paradise that lifted me up in every way. Oh! there's great food on the island as well! Enjoy!!

Perfect base - and lovely hosts

Perfect Barbados cottage for our family. A basically private beach is just over a sand dune and the airport is 8 minutes away. Super clean and seemingly recently updated cottage with comfortable beds and all things needed for a beach vacation supplied - sunscreen, beach chairs, towels, etc. The host and his family were incredibly welcoming. Even was able to get some surf lessons from Alan - he was amazing and so patient! Would go back in a heartbeat.

Fantastic home away from home on Barbados

Our family had a great time staying with Alan and Sonia in Inch Marlowe. They were wonderful hosts, providing key insights and advice on how to spend our (initially completely unplanned) week - we left feeling like we truly got to know the whole island so much more than if we'd stayed in a generic hotel.Once we did get our bearings, almost every time we mentioned an activity or even an idea of a plan, we discovered our hosts had personal connections to others all over the island, whether in restaurants, beach clubs, or professional surfing instruction ;-)As for the apartment, it was well-sized for our family of two adults and two 14/11-year old kids - enough room to sleep all comfortably, and a great place to recover peacefully from our busy days out and about. The proximity to a private beach entrance steps from the property was the cherry on top! In sum, if we were to come back to beautiful Barbados, we'd stay here again in an instant!

Home Away from Home

Upon arrival and being greeted by Alan & Sonia, we felt like being home. Alan showed us around and explained the ins and outs. We enjoyed the beach behind the apartment, walks on Long Beach garden setting by the apartment. The apartment had all the basics, was very clean and cozy. Alan and family were so friendly we felt like we’ve known them forever. They pointed us to the best places to dine in and spots to visit. We enjoyed listening to the surf in the morning and watched the frolicking monkeys around the property. If anyone is looking for a friendly, happy place to stay look no further! Thank you Burke’s family for making our stay so fun!

Picture perfect getaway

Everything about our stay at Cheeze Don Bread was outstanding. The apartment/guest house is cozy, well-appointed, 50 yards from what seems like your own private beach and hosted by an amazing couple in Alan and Sonz. They could not have been more helpful and responsive, answering dozens of questions prior to arrival (several of which were covid protocol related) but also tips on places to eat, surf etc. once we were on the island. Five stars doesn’t do it justice— we highly highly recommend it!

We came in for a vaca of surfing, scuba diving, island exploring and beach relaxing. This was the perfect home base. Alan and family are wonderful, helpful hosts, who are more than willing to make suggestions and make phone calls to set up excursions on your behalf. The home is perfect for its purpose and if you spend some time there it is set up to encourage social interaction with your crew. Fantastic hosts in a beautiful location

Alan, Sonia and their family are some of the nicest, down to earth and hardest working folks we’ve had the pleasure of meeting. No matter what our request, they always made the time to accommodate us and make us feel welcome. Their home is beautiful and the downstairs space provided privacy while being a very short walk through a picturesque path to an almost secluded sandy beach with turquoise water. We walked the neighbourhood and went to the beach daily while enjoying the local fish market and in Oistins which is a must see. We highly recommend staying with Alan and his wonderful family.

We arrived in Barbados for Spring break with our three children -(16,12,11)-there is not enough space to write how much we enjoyed our stay. It is the perfect location and set up for our family. Easy access to the beach, close to activities ...just a tropical paradise. The accommodations are perfect if you want a clean, spacious and quiet surrounding. The Burke family was so gracious to inform and help with surfing lessons, sailing and snorkeling adventures and good spots to eat. We hope to return one day so and will only stay here. Thank you so much!!!

Best hidden gem!

We stayed at Cheez Don Bread over the Christmas holiday this year and loved every minute of it. The owners are wonderful people who made us feel right at home and they provided a lovely, well equipped guest house for us. The location is great - quiet neighborhood, right on the beach with easy driving distance to the West coast restaurants, shops and beaches and it is very close to the airport. Surf breaks at South point and Freights Bay are within a 5 minute drive if you are interested in surfing, windsurfing or SUP. Their gated house is surrounded by lush, beautiful plants - it is truly a tropical oasis where you feel like you can get away from it all. We love visiting Barbados and have stayed at various hotels before this visit, however, this is by far the best. We'll definitely be staying here again. Thanks Alan and Sonia for your wonderful hospitality!

Cheez don bread vacation

Alan and Sonia were wonderful hosts and very accommodating. A beautiful apartment, clean and well maintained. The main queen bed is in the living area and there is a separate bedroom with a double bed. There are two bathrooms, one has a shower but no sink and the other has a sink but no shower. Kitchen facilities are excellent and were well used. The outside area is beautiful, very relaxing to sit with a cold drink and chat with Jack, the parrot. Nice BBQ provided, and good outdoor lighting because it gets dark around 6:30 pm. There is a lovely beach a couple of minutes walk away, which is good for walking, not swimming. The sargassum comes and goes and there is no shade. You will require a car because it is a drive to pretty much anywhere. Not a problem during the day but I found driving at night difficult with narrow roads, invisible potholes, and headlights coming at you etc. Guess I am getting too old. Oistins is about a 15 minute drive with lots of dining options. Surfers Bay Beach Bar is about 10 minutes and is a fun spot for food, drinks and great views. Overall, we had a great vacation!

Little piece of Heaven

We have been regular VRBO/Home Away users for several years. Cheez Don Bread has now become one of our favourites. Right from the start, Alan couldn't have been more assisting and accomodating. Reading the reviews and doing some homework we realized that a car would be an asset to our visit. Alan had it set up and arranged ASAP. The location is quiet and peaceful so you can do nothing but relax and enjoy the property and beach, but it's location is convenient to be able to get out and explore the island and it's people. The island is beautiful and safe. Alan, Sonia and the kids Jacob and Jodie couldn't have been better hosts ( Josh was out surfing the world). They are there, but they are not. If you need something, they are quick with suggestions and assistance otherwise you won't even know they are there. The apartment is spacious, clean and has everything you need. As mentioned in other posts, having beach towels was a great asset. We were even able to do a small load of laundry which helped out. The kitchen has everything you could require. The BBQ is awesome and had "Bear" to assist. There is quiet sitting area outside by Jacob's aviary and we enjoyed waking up to all his birds singing in the mornings. Because of the constant breeze we did not experience any bugs, but it was nice to know there was bug spray and some sunscreen there is needed. Our only regret was that we did not take Alan and Sonia up on the invitation to go to the polo matches. Won't happen again!! Can't say enough about our fantastic visit and stay with the Burke family at Cheez Don Bread, or the island. If you are going to Barbados there is only one place to stay and we found it. Beautiful secluded spot with wonderful hosts. If you don’t have a hire car, ditch the taxis and take a ride on the local #11 bus (nearest stop at the top of Sea View Road)- a minibus for locals and tourists, blaring music and hair raising speed! Nearby Surfers Beach bar is a Sunday night must. The beach near the property is not a swimming one, but beautiful walks to be had. We loved it and hope to return!
