Lakinalu is well appointed with above average style, that give you a real presence of an island home. The atmosphere goes beyond the norm in detail.

The location at Maui Sands can't be beat. We are in Honokawai, between Ka'anapali and Kapalua, close to everything. About Tony-Gerard Federico

I have lived in Hawaii as a school director for 10 years, and have returned for visits to friends on Maui and Ohau. I loved living in Hawaii and made many friends from many different cultures. I currently spend most of my time in my Vermont home near Lake Champlain, when not traveling for work. Vermont is a beautiful place with people who love the land and take time to connect through kindness for others. In a real way for me this is also what Hawaii offers when you take it a little slower and make time to see the beauty of the islands and it's people. Lakinalu also offers me a great place to do my writing, with lots to keep me inspired. I wish to share this wonderful opportunity with you.

Tony-Gerard Federico purchased this condo in 2014

Why Tony-Gerard Federico chose Lahaina

Lakinalu represents to me the old Hawaii with it's low lining buildings off the shore. It is a quietier place than a large resort and offers some special private moments. The views of Molakai are really romantic no matter what age, and especially at sunset. You can snorkel in front of the property or just take a nice dip in the large tidal pools.

What makes this condo unique

Lakinalu is remodeled to share some real polynesian furnishings, to include a Samoan wedding garment given to me by a Samoan chief. The weaved baskets were also given to me during my visits of the various island in Polynesia. Lakinalu is well furnished with all you need to feel at home if you stay for only a few days or a few weeks. The location also offers you the ability to walk to shopping and dinning out. The lanai is big enough to hang out or use for dinning while you listen to the sound of the ocean.

Please note that there is no washer or dryer in this unit or on site. The Hospitality website will provide information on area laundramats available.

Guestbook comments from the manager

We've found everything we needed, and more, to have a great stay on Maui. Thank you for all the attention to detail and first class amenities.

We enjoy eating breakfast on your beautifully designed lanai, grillingfish on the nearby grill and watching sunset on the deck. Simply put: Paradise on Earth. Hope to be back again soon.

The front door has a security screen installed making it easy to open the front door to allow the breezes to flow through. This unit is situated perfectly to swim, snorkel, paddle board & kayak right off the shoreline! There are 3 volcanic reefs parallel to our shore. During low to mid-tide, the inner area, amid the seawall & the 1st reef is a well protected area. Between the 1st & 2nd reef is a natural channel we refer to as 'the tub', only 4-7' deep, the reefs protect this area from ocean swell and is great snorkeling along some of the healthiest reef on the west side of Maui! We see turtles daily, as well as tons of fish, Eagle rays, sea birds and the occasional Monk seal. From December through mid April this is a great location for whale watching. Past the 2nd reef and among the lava labyrinth of the 3rd is the best area to observe a large variety of sea life while snorkeling!

Great low-key condo with ocean-view. Very clean !!!

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I enjoyed our stay at this condo. It was very well stocked. Frying pans, pots were very new, which is not the norm for a rental. The place is older, but that did not affect us one bit and it is one of the cleanest rental we have ever been to. Tony is super helpful and responsive. The only problem we had during our stay was that someone parked in our assigned spot. We called Tony and we figured out a solution immediately.

The only one thing we would like to mentioned is that if you come from colder region and is used to sleeping in 65 degree weather, it may take you a few days to adjust. You are not allow to run A/C during the night. There is a nice breeze most of the day and it was very comfortable and we did not need to run A/C. Two out of the 8 nights during our stay, the bedroom was a bit warmer than we would like. There are several fans in the room for you to use, so it was ok. Overall, it was a great location and condo !!!!

Sounds of the sea...ahhhhh!

  • 4 of 5

We were impressed with the wealth of information about checking in, Hawaii and things to do that we received while using this site and from the owner, Tony.

Check in was simple and the place was clean.

Loved having a kitchen to cook in, which saved us a ton of money.

Bring your own knives, however. There wasn’t a sharp one in the drawer. And if you’re a serious cook, you’re going to need one.

The best fish market, Hawaiian BBQ and shaved ice in Lahaina are within walking distance., as in right across the street.

The place was very safe, we never felt uncomfortable.

The bed was wonderful, so much that we slept pretty hard and lost out on the morning sunrise tour we had scheduled.

But that was ok. The ocean sounds nearby lull you to sleep.

Every evening the sun sets and everyone goes out to see it.

You can hear the conch shell being blown down the beach to signify the end of the day. Magical.

Make no mistake, this is an apartment.

People live there on property full time.

They know and love Tony.

And after several great conversations on the phone...we did too.

So if you plan on hard drinking/drugging, breaking stuff or generally acting foolish—pick another place.

Owner's Response: Aloha Tammy, Thank you for the outstanding review , it certainly represents more of a 5 star rating. I know you truly enjoyed your stay and want to do it again. I realize that you are a gourmet cook and actually bring your own knives when you travel. That being said although there are good knives in the kitchen , some new knives were just purchased , and also a sharpener was added to the collection in the kitchen. Yes, Lakinalu does offer the feel of a special home when staying on Maui, it both provides and deserves the respect of the aloha spirit. Mahalo......Tony-Gerard

Great location, well appointed

  • 5 of 5

Perfect spot for enjoying the Lahaina area. The complex itself is relatively quiet, but on the main drag so easy to get to restaurants and activities. It is a very clean place, with a small but complete kitchen. The living space is comfortable, with an ample deck/porch as well. TVs, dvd players, etc as well if needed. Would happily stay here again if we were in the area.

Beautiful condo and great location. The kitchen is a cook’s dream.

  • 4 of 5

Tony was very responsive and checked on us. There is almost everything you could possibly need in this condo. We used the crockpot to cook our meal as we went out exploring. We ate on the lanai every meal. The turtles were near shore right at the higher seating area. They were there every evening and morning. The beach was gorgeous and it was lots of fun looking into the tidal pools. Good swimming area. Tony recommended the Java Jazz across the road. Killer spinach salad and great live music. A great condo for a great price.

Great location for beaches, Napili, Lahaina, and beyond

  • 5 of 5

Tony provides a great home base from which to explore the western part of Maui. The condo has everything you need to enjoy your stay. The fridge and beach gear (including snorkels and towels) make the stay easy to enjoy and made the outings easy. The proximity to the ocean is great and the sound of the waves was easily heard and lulled us to sleep every night, it was great! Though the apartment has an AC unit, it was unneeded with the breeze going through the apartment.

The waterfront near the condo is crystal clear but isn't much of a beach. However, the channel hosts a number of turtles that were a sight to behold! The snorkel gear was very useful here. Be very careful on the coral/rocks, they will slice you up as they did my poor wife! Please wear footwear if you venture out. Other sandy beaches are very close by and not inconvenient at all.

Tony was accommodating to our schedule and very helpful. If we return to the island again we'll certainly consider going back!

Owner's Response: Aloha Jaron, Mahalo for your thoughtful review. It sounds like you both got into the spirit of the island and Lakinalu. I agree with you that beach shoes are needed when walking out on to the reefs. I suggest too that the shoes provided at Lakinalu should be used to prevent damage to feet. Please do return to Lakinalu . You both they are eligible for a special discount. Best regards....Tony

Charming condo with amazing views in the day and the sounds of the ocean to sing you to sleep

  • 5 of 5

First of all, I have to say how wonderful the owner, Tony, is. He gave us some wonderful advice on good beaches, snorkeling spots, and when a slight issue arose half way through our stay, he took care of it so quickly that it didn’t affect us at all. He was so gracious and kind and really made us feel welcome and comfortable. We truly loved staying here! The view from the patio, from where we would eat breakfast - and occasionally dinner, had a delightful view. Twice we woke to a stunning rainbow just off the beach. We sat, sipping coffee and watching the rainbow, serenaded by birds and crashing waves. I can’t think of a better Hawaiian experience than that. Sure, you can get as good, but not better! I will say that the view is partial from the balcony but when we wanted a full view of the ocean we would sit on the lawn area where, most of the time, we had the whole place to ourselves - felt like a private beach! Also, there is a perfect view of the sunset; not sure anywhere on the island could have a better view. Maybe on Haleakalā, but that’s not really fair. As for the space inside, it was very cozy and Tony provided a lot of items for us to use-made it feel more like a home. Also, we found the location to be perfect. Nearly everything we wanted to do was no more than a 15 minute drive. Lahaina has got to be one of the best places to stay in all of Maui. I could honestly just keep raving about this place. It was my first time going to Hawaii - I’m smitten - and the next time we go we hope to stay here again, for whatever that’s worth.

Honokawai Beach Park
Car: recommended

Honokawai is located on the Northwest shore of Maui, with views of the islands of Molokai and Lanai across the channel. Maui Sands epitomizes old school Hawaii ambiance. This is a low density property, with beautiful grounds, including mango and banana trees. We are a very easy short walk from some lovely beaches and Honokawai Beach Park. There are many good local restaurants, a large grocery store, two farmers markets, a health food store, a coffee shop and some great spa facilities, all within a 3-5 minute walk. One of the favorite things about this location is the Farmers Market that is a short walk away across from the Honokawai Beach Park. They hold a special outdoor produce market on Monday, Wednesday and Friday mornings, but they offer fresh organic produce and a deli from 7am to 7pm, 7 days a week. The Farmers Market offers wonderful healthy acai bowls, juices and smoothies.

A short drive south to Whalers Village, and further on to Lahaina brings you to great Front Street shopping and historic sights. The Historic town of Lahaina has something for everyone, From Warren and Annabelles Magic Show (some of the best close hand magic we've ever seen) to shopping and the Award Winning Ulalena show at the Maui Myth and Magic Theater, you will have no problem finding great entertainment.

The Wharf in Lahaina has it's share of wonderful excursions to choose from as well. We particularly like Trilogy for a day trip to the Island of Lanai. There are many sunset cruises to choose from, fishing, sailing, and whale watching trips to fit most budgets.

North towards Kapalua there are 3 more championship golf courses, as well as fabulous beach walks and mountainside hiking! Nothing like a sunset view from the side of a volcano!

We are within minutes of some terrific restaurants and a short drive from many many more. Ocean gear such as fishing equipment, snorkel gear, and kayaks can be rented within walking distance. There is a bicycle and scooter rental across the street.
