Retired couple, having raised their family in this unique setting, has moved to smaller accommodations... Can now share this special property with others.
James Padgett purchased this lodge in 1962
Unique in the mountain settings of Western North Carolina. Cool, green retreat from harried, hot city life... yet convenient to everything the area has to offer.
Something for everybody from well-stocked library, pool table, hammock on the porch, to playground, softball field, picnics and bonfire circle on the creek.
I meant to write this review awhile ago!
I had first contacted James about this property as it met my vision for a outdoors reception. My husband and I eloped at the courthouse last year, but still needed to plan a reception. No “wedding” venues met my fancy, so I decided I would find a private home where I could stay (and my family, plenty of room for all of us!) and hold the event. They were VERY helpful and responsive throughout the booking process. They also didn’t mind that I’d be having an event, which seems to be hard to find on VRBO.
I was there over Easter weekend. My parents, and my sister and her family came from Ontario, Canada to stay. They loved the home. We also had room for another set of friends, and my sister-in-law and her family. All six bedrooms were put to use most nights (the top "kid" room is adorable!)! The house itself is very nice, you can tell it’s custom and was a family home. It was a little chilly, as it’s an older home and there weren’t many spare blankets available. So if you are coming anytime other than summer I would recommend bringing some extra blankets, as well some extra towels, and some slippers! The fireplaces were nice though and helped with the coldness for sure. There is even a book in the living room about the history of the house, very interesting!
The grounds are beautiful. I feel we missed everything blossoming by just a couple weeks, but I could definitely see the potential. Their son, Patrick, lives on the property (his cabin can be seen from the back porch). He was helpful in terms of making sure we had everything we needed, and he also assisted in landscape clean up for our reception. They allowed me to put up a large rental tent, and do a parking lot in the upper parking lot. The pictures we got done are beautiful, if you would like to view the gallery they are available here: http://deeanakourtneyphotography.pass.us/brushrumley/ (My photographer is also available to come back if you decide to have something similar to this!).
All in all, this was the perfect place to have my “backyard boho get-together reception” as well as a place to relax! I wish I had more time to explore the grounds of all the 20 acres, but there just wasn’t the time getting ready for our event. I plan to return one day to reminisce!
This was a perfect setting to bring all of our family together. The house was big enough that everyone had there own space, but also had space to accommodate us when all together. The setting was amazing with the little Brook running through the property and just right for our grandson to fish in and he caught 6 little suckers!!! The game room with the pool table was a big hit and of course the big front porch with hammock was so relaxing.
We loved that they not only recycled by but also composted too. Jim and son Patrick could not of been anymore welcoming and making you feel right at home. I would highly recommend this amazing house and property to come and stay. It was out in the country but not too far from Ashville, the blue ridge parkway and the Biltmore. We would definitely stay here again!! Thank you for sharing your historic log home with our family.
Owner on property was very helpful. 9 guys on a cycling trip with plenty of room for each of us and our bikes (18 bikes). Nice setting and centrally located for our needs.
Whippoorwhill is a gorgeous, gigantic log-cabin in the woods, that manages to feel cozy and spacious at the same time. The house is very private, nestled in the trees above a creek, and there's plenty of room inside and out for relaxing. They have a walled-in porch at the front with a beautiful view of nature, a huge well-appointed kitchen, a cozy sitting room with a working fireplace, a game room with a pool table, and nice large windows for plenty of natural light! There's a well-kept backyard, and just down the driveway there are picnic tables and a field by the creek where you could play frisbee, or have a catch, if the weather was warm. The bedrooms are nicely separated from each other around this amazing mezzanine upstairs, so it was really easy to find a private corner away from the group when we wanted. Honestly, we spent one afternoon just lazing about the house, instead of getting out to explore the mountains since it felt like we were right in the heart of things, already. The owners are gracious and welcoming, and they've done a great job opening up their family home! I would definitely love to visit again.
Some of the members of our mountain biking club stayed at in this very spacious log house for a week. We had plenty of room both inside and outside of the house to do whatever we wanted to do. The location was perfect to get to almost anything we wanted to do within a short amount of time. We left the owners, who are also very charming people some suggestions that would make renting again (and we will go back) easier for both them and potential guests.
