Perfect Spot for a Getaway in Paradise

  • 5 of 5

We were looking to find somewhere quiet, peaceful, and off the grid to get away from city life for a while and Pua Malu was absolutely ideal! Nothing better than the feeling of waking up, picking fruit from the trees in the yard to make fresh squeezed juice, and being able to spend the day doing whatever sounds good at the moment. Beaches, hiking, snorkeling, sunsets, farmers markets, shops, and restaurants are all nearby and wonderful. This part of the Big Island is quiet and lush with tons of personality, rather than the commercial or resort-dominated areas of Hawaii that you'll often find, and everywhere you go you'll be greeted with a smile.

The cottage itself is lovely and homey, with everything you need to cook (the grill is amazing) and the lanai is spacious and a perfect spot to relax. Dawn and Lee are very amiable and helpful but not in-your-face, and they have towels, beach chairs, boogie boards, snorkel gear, and a cooler ready for guests to use. They are very knowledgeable about the area and are more than happy to point you in the right direction for whatever you have in mind to do.

We can't wait to return and my only concern about posting this review is the place is so good that it may be booked when we want to go back!

Soothingly charming tropical retreat

  • 5 of 5

What a lovely quiet retreat! We spent a week in December enjoying the birdsong and greenery of Pua Malu. Oranges, lemons, tangelos and avocados freshly picked from the trees around the cottage welcomed us along with a friendly, informative note from Dawn. She and Lee were so welcoming and helpful but also very respectful of our privacy amidst the fruit trees. Pua Malu looks just like the photos on the website – bright colors with island themed art, cozy living area and lanai, plenty of solar heated hot water in the river-stone-floored shower and very comfy bed with plenty of warm covers for chilly evenings. The kitchen had everything we needed, and they even provide boogie boards and beach chairs for guest use. We loved the laid-back pace of Hawi and Kappaau just 5 minutes down the mountain. In Hawi, we enjoyed Sushi Rock so much we had dinner there 3 nights. Surprisingly good snorkeling at Mahukona was only a 10-minute drive away, and we saw whales spouting as we drove south to Hapuna Beach for boogie boarding and enjoying the waves. A winding drive took us to the end of the road at Pololu Valley to hike down to the spectacular black stone beach. We were enthralled by the beautiful drive over the Kohala Mountain Road to Waimea and on to the Waipio Valley. We’re sold on the wonderful diversity of the Big Island. Mostly we enjoyed just relaxing in the tropical quiet of Pua Malu. We eagerly look forward to returning.

3 great days at Pua Malu Cottage.

  • 5 of 5

A lovely retreat, and decidedly off the beaten path. This cottage is not on a noisy main road, but instead is literally in the middle of an orchard and is wonderfully silent, with the only noise coming from the chatter of birdsong. Kapaau, being fairly off the usual tourist routes, is a good retreat with lots of places for hikes and incredible vistas. The tiny town of Hawi is full of eccentric locals hanging out at the local coffee shop, which opens early. The hosts of the cottage were very friendly. Nothing but good things to say about our experience there!

Comfortable airy hideaway

  • 5 of 5

This cottage is truly hidden away in the green hills of Hawi. We found it easily in spite of its tucked away back in the trees nature. Fresh fruit awaited us and was available daily from all of the bearing trees. I particularly liked the ruby grapefruit and the avocados. Dawn was gracious and happy to meet us and invisible to us unless we sought her out. This was one of our favorite places to stay out of the many that we have tried on the island.

Breezy, simple, peaceful comfort.

Pua Malu was the last stop on an island-wide, ten-day trip this month, and while I loved everywhere I explored on Hawai'i, this cottage--and neighboring towns Hawi and Kapa'au-- were really special. The cottage is a little over a mile up a neighborhood road from highway 270, tucked down a dirt driveway and surrounded by bamboo and fruit trees. It was very windy when we arrived, and the bamboo knocking and whipping in the wind is loud-- but not in the same stressful sort of way that traffic or bad neighbors are! Accommodations are clean, spacious, and very well constructed-- the shower is a real treat (large pebbles make up the floor, massaging your feet while you rinse). A huge porch is the perfect place for breakfast, and the kitchen is fully equipped-- although you may not need to cook, with the wealth of fresh fruit available!

The cottage runs on solar power, but you won't find any difference in your ability to use lights or appliances, and Dawn and Lee will run a generator for a half hour if it's cloudy, just to re-up the power store.

Hawi and Kapa'au--just a few miles apart-- are really special. They're one-road towns, quiet but warm, and filled with galleries and a few (but delicious) places to eat. For a bigger-town excursion, Waimea (Kamuela) is just a 30 minute drive, but you'll wish it was longer-- the mountain road there is gorgeous.

Dawn and Lee are not hovering hosts, giving you plenty of space to enjoy your vacation, but they do live on the property and are very, very friendly and helpful in case you drive the wrong way in or need help with lights/shower temperature/anything else with the cottage.

We'll certainly return, and recommend the cottage to any traveler looking for a wonderfully unexpected and unique Hawaiian experience.

Our Favorite cottage

  • 5 of 5

This cottage between Hawi and Kapaau is one of a kind. Gorgeous, stunningly colorful décor, beautiful craftsmanship, lush garden setting, privacy, and birdlife made for a relaxing retreat. Owner is delightful, helpful, informative and friendly. She shared her local fruits and avocados with us daily. One highlight was getting to see a new Monk seal pup and mother on a local beach. Also did the Polulu hike. Great place to just kick back and relax. Would gladly recommend this cottage to family and friends who want a quiet, relaxing retreat surrounded by Big Island Aloha.
