Dawn Reilly purchased this cottage in 2014
Why this property?? because it is AMAZING!! The owners before us built the structures and planted the land and we intend to just keep the same vibration that is intended to live ALOHA..

I highly recommend this bright and beautiful Cottage as a peaceful retreat getaway, it comes fully equipped.Large room comfortable for up to 4 people or two couples.Lovely large front LANAI the cottage sits up high has a great view of a beautiful variety of bamboo swaying in the wind and lovely
fruit trees and plants. Lot's of fresh air breezing through the cottage with lot's of natural light,,,, I love all the bright colors and beautiful island decor. It is located in a nice quiet town of Hawi, my favorite place on the island. This part of the island has the most beautiful beaches, best locations for whale watching and hiking into the pololu Valley is a must absolutely beautiful. I enjoyed 12 wonderful days visiting my long dear friend of over 30 yrs. who owns Pua Malu. She is one of the most positive dear friend of mine. So proud of Dawn and Lee to offer such a safe colorful quiet so peaceful cozy Cottage for all to enjoy. I look forward to returning many many more times. Mahalo Juliet from Florida =)
This cottage is truly hidden away in the green hills of Hawi. We found it easily in spite of its tucked away back in the trees nature. Fresh fruit awaited us and was available daily from all of the bearing trees. I particularly liked the ruby grapefruit and the avocados. Dawn was gracious and happy to meet us and invisible to us unless we sought her out. This was one of our favorite places to stay out of the many that we have tried on the island.
Pua Malu was the last stop on an island-wide, ten-day trip this month, and while I loved everywhere I explored on Hawai'i, this cottage--and neighboring towns Hawi and Kapa'au-- were really special. The cottage is a little over a mile up a neighborhood road from highway 270, tucked down a dirt driveway and surrounded by bamboo and fruit trees. It was very windy when we arrived, and the bamboo knocking and whipping in the wind is loud-- but not in the same stressful sort of way that traffic or bad neighbors are! Accommodations are clean, spacious, and very well constructed-- the shower is a real treat (large pebbles make up the floor, massaging your feet while you rinse). A huge porch is the perfect place for breakfast, and the kitchen is fully equipped-- although you may not need to cook, with the wealth of fresh fruit available!
The cottage runs on solar power, but you won't find any difference in your ability to use lights or appliances, and Dawn and Lee will run a generator for a half hour if it's cloudy, just to re-up the power store.
Hawi and Kapa'au--just a few miles apart-- are really special. They're one-road towns, quiet but warm, and filled with galleries and a few (but delicious) places to eat. For a bigger-town excursion, Waimea (Kamuela) is just a 30 minute drive, but you'll wish it was longer-- the mountain road there is gorgeous.
Dawn and Lee are not hovering hosts, giving you plenty of space to enjoy your vacation, but they do live on the property and are very, very friendly and helpful in case you drive the wrong way in or need help with lights/shower temperature/anything else with the cottage.
We'll certainly return, and recommend the cottage to any traveler looking for a wonderfully unexpected and unique Hawaiian experience.
This cottage between Hawi and Kapaau is one of a kind. Gorgeous, stunningly colorful décor, beautiful craftsmanship, lush garden setting, privacy, and birdlife made for a relaxing retreat. Owner is delightful, helpful, informative and friendly. She shared her local fruits and avocados with us daily. One highlight was getting to see a new Monk seal pup and mother on a local beach. Also did the Polulu hike. Great place to just kick back and relax. Would gladly recommend this cottage to family and friends who want a quiet, relaxing retreat surrounded by Big Island Aloha.
We spent a week here October 2015. Such a charming, off-beat cottage with colourful character! Totally off the grid but with all the amenities. Complete privacy - but close enough to town (you could walk to Hawi - probably about 40 minutes?) although we drove - we could not have been happier. I've never seen my always busy hubby more relaxed, sitting out on the deck, sipping his smoothie (made from fresh fruit from the garden) and watching the wildlife. Hawi is a lovely little village - has some amazing restaurants and Hawi is also host to the zipline and the "flooming the Kohala Ditch" expedition which we did and LOVED it! There are several decent grocery stores nearby. It was my first trip to The Big Island and I can't imagine going anywhere else. Thank you Dawn !
We have used VRBO many times in Hawaii and across the southwest/mountain west and while most of them have been very nice, two of them have been truly outstanding and this is one of the two!!! We loved everything about the cottage.... being able to escape from the Kailua Kona Ironman Triathlon crowds to this lush retreat in North Kohala, the beautiful grounds with bamboo and fruit trees/eucalyptus trees, the clear nights with millions of stars/minimal ambient light, secluded but just minutes from the quaint town of Hawi, the geckos, and Dawn's availability if we had any questions. We highly recommend the cottage and realize that doing so may limit its availability to us for future trips but it is an amazing place that truly has to be experienced to be appreciated!!
Dawn was great to work with, keeping in touch prior to our arrival and while we were there.
We enjoyed the fruit from the yard - avocados, limes, and bananas. Wish I had one of the avocados now to go with my burrito for supper!
There is a great, little Mexican restaurant in Hawi (Mi Ranchito), that was recommended to us by a local. The food was delicious and not high priced like many places in Hawaii. We ask many of the local people where they eat and what they recommend. If you find a place with plate lunches, they are always good with a lot of food for a very reasonable price.
A wonderful cabin. Comfortable, well appointed, and a great location for exploring the northern part of the Big Island. Loved Hawi and the funky shops. Sushi Rock made us an excellent meal and the coffee shop was a hub of activity. The cabin grounds are a tropical paradise, but the highlight was Dawn and Lee, their local knowledge and their prompt response to our questions and concerns. All in all, an excellent experience.
We have amazing hiking, biking and walks all around our area of Hawi/Kapaau to pololu valley. Swimming/snorkeling at Mahukona , which is only 10 minute drive from cottage. Massage therapy on site Humpback Whale watching from Nov-April. Zip line adventures...... and more...
