About Sarah Faulkner-Mattingley

Darren and Sarah Mattingley, two life long Alaskans who live in the beautiful resort town of Girdwood with their children and many pets. We like to collect unique properties and transform them into works of art.

Sarah Faulkner-Mattingley purchased this house in 2013

Why Sarah Faulkner-Mattingley chose Girdwood

This property was originally built as a small cabin in the late 1960's and was remodeled and added on to in 1985. When we purchased it in 2014 we saw great potential for this property and loved the custom work that was done several years back so we continued on with the rustic theme and added another wing with an additional bedroom while updating the existing structure.

What makes this house unique

Girdwood is a small valley with limited land where the average lot size is about a quarter acre. This home is situated on a larger than average lot but what attracted us to this property was the treed lot and overall charm of the home.

Last family getaway before end of summer

  • 5 of 5

Was a beautiful home! Kids 12, 13 and 18 all enjoyed their rooms, the hot tub and all of the games that were available. Everything we needed for cooking and laundry was available. Beds and linens were very comfortable. Would highly recommend to others and would stay there again. Close to everything, Anchorage, Portage glacier, Whittier, Wild Animal Conservation center (highly recommended) and Seward (Exit Glacier hiking). Thank you!

Very nice stay!

  • 5 of 5

Sarah was great and the house worked out perfect. We had a wedding to attend at Alyeska but hadn't brought along an iron for our clothes. Upon request, Sarah delivered an iron and ironing board in just a few minutes.

Hot tub was nice and hot in a peaceful setting. We even saw a few humming birds on the feeder.

Nice home, very cozy feel

  • 4 of 5

We rented this home for a mom's weekend getaway. It perfectly fit 6 adults. All the basic amenities are provided. Hot tub was a nice addition to the weekend! I didn't like that we were charged extra for having 6 people. (Extra charge of $30/night/person over 4 people). I think if the listing says sleeps 7, you should be able to have 7 guests. Other than that it was a great stay!

Annual Family Ski Trip

  • 5 of 5

We couldn't have asked for a better place to stay! Sarah was a wonderful host who was extremely helpful answering our questions about the area and house prior to our arrival. Even during our stay she made sure she let us know when and where we would be able to see the northern lights (what a wonderful sight to see). This two bedroom home fit our family of 6 adults perfectly, with wonderful views and an easy walk to the ski slopes in the morning. The house was very comfortable and had all the amenities we needed. Easy walk to the nearby waterfall and local town, so no need to have a car if you are ok with walking a few miles. I highly recommend staying here, worth every penny!

Family vacation near Anchorage.

  • 5 of 5

We stayed here as our Anchorage base. The chalet was very custom and attractive. Inside the exposed beams and rafters added a lot of charm and character. The master bedroom didnt have an attached bathroom but the wall of windows and private balcony was amazing. The other bedroom had similar views. Waking up to a daybreak in with a wall of windows was quite a sight. Downstairs, the fireplace was perfect for adding ambience and a bit of warmth to the house. Being there in the dead season, Girdwood was a very quiet place to spend time. Although this location is not in walking distance to the eateries and post office, its an easy 2-3 min drive away.

Sarah contacted us to notify us that we could check in early since there were no guests there prior to us, and later, Darren dropped by to greet us and show us how to use the amenities such as the fireplace and hot tub. (we dont have fireplaces in houses here in hawaii).

We left a rice cooker/steamer for your future guests. Thank you for a great stay.

Better than advertised

  • 4 of 5

Sarah was a wonderful host. She met us on arrival and provided very clear instructions on everything that we would need. One big disappointment was the metered Wi-Fi connection. It appears that is normal for Alaska so it isn't a complaint, just one thing I wish were different. Beyond that, the property is exactly what you see in the photos. Its very well appointed - clean and very thoughtfully laid out. Everything was labeled and where you would expect it to be for the weary traveler. The location is perfect - tucked away on a quiet street but accessible if you need to make a quick escape for activities.

There is no question that we would stay again if our travels brings us back to Alaska.
