About Sarah Faulkner-Mattingley

Darren and Sarah Mattingley, two life long Alaskans who live in the beautiful resort town of Girdwood with their children and many pets. We like to collect unique properties and transform them into works of art.

Sarah Faulkner-Mattingley purchased this house in 2013

Why Sarah Faulkner-Mattingley chose Girdwood

This property was originally built as a small cabin in the late 1960's and was remodeled and added on to in 1985. When we purchased it in 2014 we saw great potential for this property and loved the custom work that was done several years back so we continued on with the rustic theme and added another wing with an additional bedroom while updating the existing structure.

What makes this house unique

Girdwood is a small valley with limited land where the average lot size is about a quarter acre. This home is situated on a larger than average lot but what attracted us to this property was the treed lot and overall charm of the home.

Great Host - Fantastic House - would give more than 5 stars if i could

  • 5 of 5

Sarah was a great host. Met us at the place, showed us the ropes, and even replaced a missing spatula that was melted from a previous renter. Made for a fantastic heliskiing weekend.

Can't give enough praise to the house and the service providing. Would recommend to anybody,

Thanks again, Sarah!

Cameras

  • 1 of 5

We (husband and I) Rented this home for a 5 night Christmas getaway with our 2 young adult children. We arrived on a Thursday at 4:30 and notified the owner we were there. Unfortunately our dog sitter was stuck on his island (poor ice conditions, warm weather) and couldn't get off, nor could we get on to drop our labs. Rather than forfeit the price of our entire stay, we decided to forfeit the additional cleaning fee and bring the dogs for the first 2 nights until a new dog sitter could take over. At 8:30 pm we received a video clip via text, of my husband walking in the house with our dogs, complete with sound which was creepy. The text stated no dogs and reprimanded us for burning firewood in the fireplace - which we absolutely did not do. We hadn't even started a fire at that time and when we did later that evening we used only the 1 duraflame outlined in the rules. (We had firewood on our truck bed and on the porch which the owner apparently could see via cameras - leading to the false accusation of burning wood in the fireplace) I replied with what had happened and what our plan was regarding the dogs (outlined above). I was incredibly creeped out that the owner was watching us and spent the rest of the night thinking about it, though unable to leave at that time as we had a few cocktails at dinner. The next morning we immediately packed up and left the home before 10 am; having stayed 1 of the 5 nights rented. This was based on the creepiness of being watched and eavesdropped on, after all we had been in the hot tub by the time we received the video clip and it made me wonder what else was seen and heard? We were never told there were cameras and we wondered where else there were cameras? We had arrived at 4:30 and notified the owner and they never turned off the cameras they were using (4 hours later) despite knowing we were there. Having rented from VRBO for over 6 years, from Mexico to Utah, Washington and Alabama, we never expected to be recorded -audio and video. The owner did return our cleaning fee though no refund for the 4 additional nights we were to have stayed. Pictures were accurate though pay close attention it appears larger in photos than reality. The location is pretty good though a little far from town and resort - suggest driving the few miles and then walking around. It was the owner that was the biggest problem, the SPYING.

Owner's Response: First of all we do have a security system at the property and there are a couple exterior cameras which are not a secret. There is a sticker on the front door with the security companies name. The home was broken into a few years ago. There is not a camera “spying” on any interior area or the hot tub as the above guest stated in her review. We do have a NO PETS policy and I’m sorry that this guest didn’t realize that NO PETS really means NO PETS. I had my assistant stop by after they checked in to ask if they had any questions and to have them sign the check in paperwork and she noted the firewood stacked on the deck and dog food bins as well and let me know about both. After hearing this I decided to look at the camera and saw not one but two dogs entering the property. I then texted the guests and let them know that dogs are not permitted inside the house and they sent me a reply telling me to just keep the deposit so that their dogs could just stay at the house and asked me if that would be okay to which I said no it was not okay. The cleaner had to clean up one of the dogs poops inside the home after they left. Every guest receives a copy of the house rules and cancellation policy when I reply to their request. In reference to the location I will give some perspective. The entire town of Girdwood is only 2.5 miles. Our home is located less than 1/2 mile from the base of mount Alyeska daylodge and Sitzmark lounge.

Not as advertised

  • 2 of 5

Typical girdwood property with a cool addition, but this property is not as it appears. The third bedroom you have to walk through another room to get to, so it is really a 2 bedroom property. They also have multiple safety violations such as missing railing that our small child could have fallen through from the second floor and exterior deck. The owner is difficult to reach and charged an additional $150 cleaning when we left the property in very good condition and provided no explanation for the cleaning charge, especially given our small group.

Owner's Response: Out of 18 reviews, this is our first 2-star review. We require all guests to sign a copy of the house rules which are emailed at the time of inquiry and signed when the guests check in. This guest violated our party and gathering rule.(NO PARTIES OR GATHERINGS. Having more people than your reservation is made for will result in forfeiture of the entire $1000 security deposit. ) They had a work Christmas party for a small team of workers which exceeded the six guests. My cleaner who never has a negative comment about anyone said: "they left a disgusting mess." The sheets were stained and had to be thrown away on the two bunk beds, there was a bag of about 8 dirty diapers along with a few cups of unknow liquid shoved under the upstairs bathroom sink which leaked and caused a terrible mess, the kitchen was covered in grease and took 5 times longer than average to clean, the hot tub had to be drained and refilled which did not suprise me because I had a neighbor call and complain in the morning about being kept up to 2 am due to noise coming form the hot tub.The deck is 30" from the ground, and the upstairs railing was not a code violation when we had the home inspected four years ago when and codes have not changed since that time. I am always available by phone, text or email. My only regret is only retaining $150 of the deposit.

Last family getaway before end of summer

  • 5 of 5

Was a beautiful home! Kids 12, 13 and 18 all enjoyed their rooms, the hot tub and all of the games that were available. Everything we needed for cooking and laundry was available. Beds and linens were very comfortable. Would highly recommend to others and would stay there again. Close to everything, Anchorage, Portage glacier, Whittier, Wild Animal Conservation center (highly recommended) and Seward (Exit Glacier hiking). Thank you!

Very nice stay!

  • 5 of 5

Sarah was great and the house worked out perfect. We had a wedding to attend at Alyeska but hadn't brought along an iron for our clothes. Upon request, Sarah delivered an iron and ironing board in just a few minutes.

Hot tub was nice and hot in a peaceful setting. We even saw a few humming birds on the feeder.
