About Mary Gion

My husband and myself, have owned our own business for the last 45 years. We have owned this property since 1989, and finally made the decision to move from Oahu to this beautiful island, and continue our small business but in a healthier environment. We love living on the Big Island, the people, the beauty, the space with lots to do. We are hoping to share a little bit of Aloha with our future visiting friends.

Mary Gion purchased this cottage in 1989

Why Mary Gion chose Paauilo

We purchased this property in 1989, because of the location, nature, the lush green vegetation, and the serene environment, with a little country feel, but still not far from the surrounding towns, for activities, shopping, hiking, beautiful beaches. We work in the Kohala Coast area, 2 days a week, and this allows us to enjoy all that this part of the Hamakua Coast has to offer. Within minutes you can be at the beach or viewing the many beautiful waterfalls that the Hamakua Coast has to offer. It is truly a nature lovers paradise.

What makes this cottage unique

We fell in love with this property, because of it's private location and beautiful trees, not to mention the adorable cottage, which we refurbished, before moving over from Oahu, in the year 2002. We added a new bathroom, new windows, a deck, a spa, a gas fireplace, it's very cozy and unique. We have 3 acres of a lush garden setting, beautiful lawn, lots of native plants, fruit trees, vegetable garden. We are approximately 5 minutes from Kalopa State Park, where you can take a leisurely walk and get in touch with nature. We are also a 4 minute drive or 20 min. walk to the Hawaiian Vanilla Company, that offers daily teas and lunches, and also tours of the vanilla farm. If you are looking for a romantic, cozy getaway, this is the place.

Comfortable cottage

  • 5 of 5

My wife and I spent a week at Mary and Leonard’s cottage and for us one of the highlights was early morning coffee in the hot tub watching the geckos.

Mary was more than generous With fruit from her garden and we found the kitchen well equipped and ate in every night but one. Altogether a very enjoyable time.

Great place to stay!!!

  • 5 of 5

We spent 4 wonderful nights at this lovely cottage. It is in a very private & quiet location. Watch for the family of pheasants below the garden in the mornings. We enjoyed the hot tub under a full moon & it was the perfect ending to a wonderful day exploring the area. Mary left us a welcome basket which we enjoyed. She told us we could pick the tangerines. They were delicious! There is no ac but you really don’t need at as it gets cooler at night due to the higher elevation. It was very neat to sleep with the doors & windows open, it has screens of course. We would definitely recommend a stay at this quaint rustic cottage! So much fun!!!

The property was perfect for our honeymoon trip to the big island!

  • 5 of 5

The owners of this property put thought and personal touches into everything there. We thoroughly enjoyed the space and it was a great launch pad for our activities that included Mauna Kea, Volcano National Park, Kileau-Kona, Waimea, Hilo and of course Honokaa which was a great town nearby to eat and shop at. We would recommend this property to anyone else wanting a very cute and fully enhanced experience!

Awesome place

  • 5 of 5

Landlord went the extra mile to make sure we were comfortable. Furnished more like a home than a rental. We plan to return, next year. Hot tub is top quality, laundry facilities easy to use . The little touches like local food stuffs. We rent homes in much of the world and this place was one of the best yet.

Perfect Cottage for 2

  • 5 of 5

We just spent 2 weeks in this lovely cottage and it was everything we hoped for; quiet, clean, and off the beaten path. Beautifully decorated, it was wonderful to come home to after a day exploring the Island. Nights enjoying the jacuzzi while watching the stars was a favorite pastime.

Cute and cozy.

  • 5 of 5

The cottage is very clean with pretty landscaping. The owners have spent a great deal of time decorating and supplying the cottage with everyday needs. The cottage is quiet and secluded. Be aware that you must drive to reach grocery stores or any restaurants. We had no complaints during our three night stay.

We are located on the upper slopes of Paauilo, on the Hamakua Coast, a very private setting, but not far from the quaint and historical town of Honokaa, shopping, movie theater, restaurants. The popular Waipio Valley is only 12 miles away, but you need a 4 wheel drive to access the valley, or if you adventurous and in good shape you can hike to the bottom, where there is a beautiful beach. We are not too far from Hilo, on Wed., and Saturdays they have the Hilo Farmers Market, where you can find everything from fresh produce, food, and souvenirs. Hilo also has great shopping, movie theaters, museum's, botanical gardens. As you drive south of Hilo, within 35 minutes, you can be at the Volcano National Park, which offers hikes, lava tubes, and the Jagger museum. A sight that is a 'must see'. This island has a little bit of everything to offer. We look forward to sharing our little oasis with you.
