Overview

About the property

5 Bedrooms, 4 Bathrooms, Sleeps 16

The Big House features a large central, open concept chef's kitchen and family room which is flanked by 5 bedrooms and 4 bathrooms. We also have a large game room with billiards, bumper pool, and ping pong. Our outdoor jacuzzi is perfectly positioned for stargazing up at the Milky Way– since the house is tucked away from nearby towns, the visibility of the night sky is truly unforgettable. Our front and back patios allow you to either soak up or avoid the sun as you prefer with privacy, peace and quiet.

In addition to staying in the Big House, guests will be allowed to walk around our 740 acre estate ranch. We have 8 large orchards predominantly planted with avocados, but peppered with rare subtropical fruit, including passion fruit, mangoes, and lots of coffee.

About The Owner

I run our avocado farm and goat dairy! When I am not working in the orchards or the pasture, I love kayak fishing in the kelp beds and wine tasting along HW46!

The Owner purchased this house in 1979

Why The Owner chose Central Coast

This farm was founded by my grandfather in 1979, and he established our orchard and developed the ranch. After graduating college and briefly working in technology, I chose to move down to the farm to take over operations.

What makes this house unique

Our ranch has the perfect climate and access to all that the Central Coast has to offer, but adds a level of privacy and luxury unavailable almost anywhere else. Whether hiking on the ranch, strolling Main Street in the charming town of Cambria, visiting nearby Hearst Castle and its Elephant Seals, or sampling the delicious wines of the Central California Coast, you are only a short drive away.

Guestbook comments from the owner

We have had a great tradition of taking our family for a Thanksgiving retreat each year---this year was the best location ever!! The great people who own the Stepladder Ranch are wonderfully easy to work with and they care about their visitors; waiting for each family was a gift bag containing delicious avocados grown on the ranch. The Ranch provided lovely grounds as seen from the multi-windowed house and a superior view of the Pacific Ocean was a wonderful added bonus. Of course, the best part of property was the house itself. The pictures don't begin to do justice to the house---it is magnificent! Each room is decorated with vintage pictures of the ranch and memorabilia of its history. The kitchen is equipped for every need; and facilities include 2 each of refrigerators and dishwashers, 3 sinks and everything needed for our large family Thanksgiving dinner. We will definitely return to the Stepladder Ranch; in fact we are considering renting it for our company Christmas party as the helpful owners have caterers that they recommend for such an event. Each of our 4 generations was impressed and they all had a superior vacation.

Perfect for large gatherings

  • 5 of 5

We rented this house as a special getaway to celebrate my parent's 50th wedding anniversary. This is the nicest house I have ever stayed in- it was spacious with many windows revealing a view to the mountains and the most wonderful sunset every night. The bedrooms are spacious as are the common rooms. There is even a large laundry room. The kitchen is AMAZING- two sinks, two dishwashers, 2 fridges, large stove and oven, microwave and even stocked with many helpful items- some spices, saran wrap, foil and soap for washing dishes. This is a high quality house with high quality cabinets, counters and furniture. There is a large spa outside which overlooks the hills. The house is about 15 min from the beach and it is up on a hill and very remote so if you are looking for a peaceful place to be, then this is the place to be. Michelle was wonderful to work with and made sure we could have a successful celebration.

Relaxed and refreshing retreat oasis

  • 5 of 5

We came here for a team offsite. It was the perfect place for us to come and unplug, while connecting with each other. The house is gorgeous- with expansive views, beautiful decorations and spacious kitchen to prepare large meals. We enjoyed relaxing in the hot tub during sunset and even spent a day at Moonstone Beach. Michelle was really helpful with everything we needed. Would come back!

Wonderful Family Retreat!!

  • 5 of 5

We celebrated my Mother-in-laws 70th Birthday at "The Big House" and it could not have been more perfect. The house and views were amazing and we loved the hot tub and game room for the kids. We toured Hearst Ranch, spent time at San Simeon Beach, toured Stepladder Creamery, and enjoyed everything the area has to offer. Michelle was always quick to respond and was always available to answer any questions. The kitchen was amazing and the perfect place to have a chef come cook. Thanks again, we will be back!!

DA BIG HOUSE WAS DA BOMB!

  • 5 of 5

I booked this for a family reunion with my family for my birthday. My requirements were a) comfort, b) entertainment for kids between 1-16, c) good food and cocktails, d) off the grid, and e) hopefully some great nature. This place offered all of that and Michelle was incredibly responsive on any questions I had about the place. We had some quality family time (plenty of board games, ping pong, bumper pool, pool table, jacuzzi) and ate some good food and wine. You have wifi and it works fine, but I didn't give it out to anybody unless they had to work - awesome! The only potential negative for some (not for us) was that it is a trek to civilization and the posting makes that clear (20-30 minutes to get to town and tough drive at night) - be prepared for that. Overall, great experience and we are already thinking about doing it again next year!
