My wife and I rent out a fully furnished ground floor 2 bedroom apartment that opens onto a garden in a peaceful and safe neighborhood in North Berkeley. Our apartment is a short walk to UC Berkeley, public transit, restaurants, and grocery stores.
The apartment consists of a full eat-in kitchen, 2 bedrooms with comfortable queen sized beds with organic bedding, a small bathroom, a spacious living room, plus a dining table in the garden for al fresco meals. An additional mattress is provided for a 5th guest; you'll find it underneath the bedroom mattress.
Our house itself has been earthquake retro-fitted to the latest standard, and recently weatherproofed. We provide an extra mattress for an additional guest, which you can find underneath one of the beds.
There is a 2-hour car parking zone on weekdays in our street (10am-5pm), but you can park your car for free in our driveway, which fits one car. Higher elevated cars like SUVs fit better in our driveway, because it’s sloped (see pics).
If your car is a lowrider or too big to fit our driveway, you can purchase a daily parking permit from us for $5/day. Because we can only purchase a limited amount of permits from the City of Berkeley, please confirm with us before you finalize the booking that we will have enough permits for your parking needs.
There’s easy access to the house key, which you'll find inside a locked box. After your booking is finalized, you'll receive the house manual, which also contains the punch in code to access the key box.
We offer free shared laundry in our garage, and free fast Wifi Internet through Comcast Blast (speeds up to 200mbps).
This apartment also offers good sized walk-in closets, a 42" LED TV (Comcast TV 140 channels), a BluRay Player and Netflix access.
We also have a baby crib and a child car booster seat if need be. If you or your children like to play sports (there are parks with hoops and tennis courts around the corner) feel free to ask for our sports gear such as football, basketball, soccer ball, tennis rackets etc.
Interaction with Guests:
We do like to get to know our guests, but we honor your privacy and won't disturb you. There’s no need to to introduce yourself at your arrival; since we live in the same house, we’ll eventually cross paths.
Now and then, my wife likes to work in the garden, where you may bump into her for a small chat. If you're into hiking, ask my wife to show you where to find the secret stairways of the Berkeley Hills and the route to a local waterfall. Its a fun hike!
We are a multilingual family, who enjoy visitors from all around the world. My wife, Rachel, who was raised in Brooklyn, NY, teaches film at a college in Berkeley. Besides English, she also speaks Spanish, French, and a little German. I was raised in Germany and therefore speak German, and I work as a documentary film editor here in the Bay Area.
Carlo Kamin purchased this apartment in 2010
Location, Location, Location !!!
The apartment is about a 10 minute walk away from UC Berkeley campus (ca.0.5 miles/3.5 blocks) and a 5 minute walk to Berkeley's Gourmet Ghetto.
It's a 15 minute walk to Downtown BART, which will take you to San Francisco within about 30 minutes, and the AC Transit bus station is 5 minutes away.
We grow a Meyer Lemon Tree in our garden and many fresh herbs which you're welcome to pick.
In the Bay Area, the air can be be misty during rainy season and pollen laden during spring; our apartment is equipped with a professional air purifier (iQAir), which you are welcome to run at any time, especially if you experience allergies.
Our family of four (2 elementary-aged kids) used this apartment as our base while visiting the Bay Area for a week, which included days spent in San Francisco, Berkeley, points north (Muir Woods, Point Reyes), as well as the South Bay. Highlights of the apartment are as follows:
Location -- safe and peaceful, yet close to the Gourmet Ghetto (walkable) and Solano Ave shops and restaurants. Multiple grocery stores in walking distance as well. Also close to Tilden Park (hiking/mtn biking) and the UC Berkeley campus. Adequate (and free) on-street parking. We loved being able to walk to cafes/bakeries in the morning. SF options might be more central for the typical tourist, but this part of Berkeley offers a more residential and friendly neighborhood in which to relax.
House condition -- clean, well-kept, about the size you'd expect of an urban or student apartment. For our family of 4, a bigger bathroom would've helped us get out faster in the morning, but for most people/couples, this won't be an issue. Plenty of extra towels, linens, and kitchen amenities (no dishwasher, though).
Family-friendly -- 2 bedrooms, and there was an extra (and very comfortable!) pull-out mattress in Room 2, so our 2 kids didn't have to share a bed. In case you want to limit screen time (yes, there's good internet here), there were board games and kids books available, which kept the kids happy while we cooked in the evenings. There's a little patio area and garden, too, which was very inviting during our sunny visit.
We booked this property for our family vacations from December 23 to the 1st of January for a party of 5.
We have booked before properties in other places via Homeaway, VRBO, AirBnB, etc, in Orlando, Colorado, San Juan del Sur, Tamarindo (CR) and many other places, and I can asure you that this property was by far the most complete property we have ever visit. The hosts (Carlo and his wife) provide us with everything you can imagine, from the basic stuff for cooking, for the bathrooms to even a cooler, anything you can think about the will have it.
The house was really confortable and welcoming, and its location is convenient to go anywhere, you can be in SF in just 20 minutes, go shopping to the San Francisco Outlets in Livermore in just 45 minutes or you can even go to Lake Tahoe in about 3 hours if you don't mind driving.
They have an amazing portfolio with step by step instructions for everything and also a lists of recommendations, but if you still want something in specific just ask Carlo and he will sure help you!
Don't worry about parking cause the have a free spot for and any car can fit (believe my we traveled in a Ford Expedition).
Make sure you visit Solano Ave, University Ave, Shattucky Ave
The apartment was perfect for our stay for 8 days.. beds were comfortable and amenities perfect..within walking distance to food and the BART. Carlo was a great host.. the toilet overflowed and he came down to unplug.. highly recommended.. 😀If we are ever back in SF we would come back and stay.
I'm only sorry we didn't discover this sooner, as our daughter has just graduated from Berkeley. We had a 3 night stay for 4 people, and found the place absolutely wonderful. The location was ideal--close to restaurants, and a supermarket, so good for going out or staying in. The kitchen was well stocked (including PG Tips tea bags!), and we were very happy to have use of the patio area outside, where we hosted a couple of friends for an afternoon bottle of wine. Carlo and Rachel's welcome guide made it clear that we were welcome to make ourselves at home, and they even included things most people would never think of (instructions on where to find the earthquake supplies). Internet worked well, comfy beds, plenty of spare towels/sheets, easy to operate heating, and all very clean and well organized. I just wish we'd known about it sooner!
Our stay at Rachel's and Carlo's home could not have been better. The location is excellent, the neighborhood is beautiful, the spacious apartment had all we wanted and more. The beds are great, the back
yard was a perfect serene place to hang
out and the kitchen was fully equipped. Rachel and Carlo are fantastic hosts, very considerate and caring. I only wish I had
been able to stay longer .
