Can't Wait To Go Back!

  • 5 of 5

If you are planning to go to Great Guana Cay, Flips Flops is the place to stay! From the ferry dock on arrival to the ferry dock when leaving, the Flip Flops service was excellent! The staff was so helpful and friendly, it was like visiting old friends!

Beachcomber is the perfect place to stay. It was beautifully appointed with a fully equipped kitchen, comfy beds with lovely linens and as much air conditioning as you could possibly need! The deck right outside my bedroom door was perfect for a morning cup of coffee to watch the sunrise or an afternoon cocktail to watch the sun set! The property is very private and beautifully maintained with manicured lawns, flowers and coconut trees. The sound of the surf and the breeze through the coconut trees was so peaceful...made the hammock right outside, the place to be in the afternoon!

Just up the walkway is a private, shady pavilion with magnificent views of miles of sandy beaches and the ocean is only footsteps away. The pavilion is marvellous for midmorning mimosas...just sayin'...

About a five minute walk down the beach, is the famous Nippers restaurant and bar. That's the place for a Sunday afternoon party or anytime for great food and potent drinks! A visit to Nippers is a must on Guana Cay!

Really, Flip Flops is the best of all worlds; peace and quiet when you like or meeting new friends just moments away.

We rented a golf cart to get to the food store and restaurants but spent the majority of our time simply sitting in the ocean just down the steps from the pavilion or on our own private deck.

I cannot recommend Flip Flops enough! It's secluded and private yet right in the middle of everything. I truly can't wait to go back!

Oh! And be sure to visit Gone Conchin', which is owned by Flip Flops' property manager Becky, for gorgeous beachwear and sun dresses! It's right across from the ferry dock!

One visit was not enough. I've stayed in Beachcomber at Flip Flops 4 0r 5 times...lost count.

Great Guana Cay - my preference has always been to stay on an island that does not have an airport. Guana is simultaneously remote and close. Although it takes two planes and a ferry, I can leave New York on a cold winter morning and feel the sand of Dolphin Beach between my toes on the same afternoon. Guana is quiet and laid back most of the time; with the exception of afternoon/evenings at Nippers or Grabber's where it’s a bit louder with the great rum punches (each place has it’s own secret recipe.

I have always stayed at Flip Flops, and (lucky me) always in Beachcomber, which is closest to the water, although only by 30 seconds. I have been all over Guana Cay - Flip Flops is, without question, the most beautiful place I have found. We could see the ocean from our deck, but I always took morning coffee out on the covered pavilion, on the the bluff overlooking the beach; which stretches for miles. On some winter days the ocean surf is roiling and attacks body surfers, kite boarders, and photographers. Other times it looks like a turquoise lake and attracts divers, lobster hunters, and photographers again ( I said it was beautiful, right?) And, If I ever saw more than ten people on the beach at the same time, that was a busy day.

So why do I keep going back to the same island year after year; there are other pretty places. It’s the people who live there. In the years I’ve been visiting, I’ve never had a negative contact, and I’m not the most easy person to get along with. Top on the list are the Lightbourn family, who operate Flip Flops. Becky manages the place, makes sure you get to your ferry, supplies tennis rackets, and can tell you everything that’s happening on Guana. Her mom, Jane is a fine artist and has done most of the paintings that decorate the walls. If you are lucky enough to meet Becky’s dad, be sure to listen to the story of how he got the nickname Ship Wreck Terry.

You can go almost anywhere you might want to go on a bicycle (rent from Dive Guana) or golf cart (Dive Guana has these too). Dive Guana also rents power boats and, of course, runs Scuba diving trips. There is fishing for Wahoo and Mahi Mahi on the ocean side; inquire at the marina at Orchid Bay.

Finally, I must mention the sunsets. My only regular appointment was photographing the sunset. You can do this with a drink in hand at Grabber's; but my favorite spot is at the head of the harbor, across from Guana Grocery.

Have fun, and tell everyone I say Hi.

Beautiful Beachfront Property-Perfect for couples, families, or groups!

  • 5 of 5

My family and I are repeat guests at Beachcomber and have also stayed in 'Sea Lace', a single bedroom cottage on the same property. The property is perfect because it's very private, yet within walking distance to everything you could possibly want or need. And you can rent bicycles or golf carts from nearby businesses should you want to explore further. The staff are incredibly helpful and will do their best to fulfill any special requests or needs. They also provide pick up and drop off to and from the ferry dock upon your arrival/departure. Beachcomber's cottage is a very comfortable 2b/2b cottage with an adjoining living/kitchen/dining room in the center, and a large front deck with Adirondack chairs and hammock just in front under the shade of two coconut trees. You have a 30 second walk up to the huge beach pavilion with private steps down to one of the most beautiful white sand beaches on the planet. It's also a great place to snorkel with a beautiful barrier reef that runs along the shore just 20 yards off the beach. We love to take our coffee up to the pavilion in the mornings to enjoy the amazing sunrise, followed by a walk down the beach and a swim. It's also a great place to enjoy a little happy hour at the end of the day and just a 5 minute walk down the beach to the famous Nippers Beach bar & grill.

Owner's Response: Thank you for sharing your experience at Beachcomber and your observations about Great Guana Cay and Flip Flops on the Beach. Back when we purchased this property, our intention was to use it as a family vacation compound and to share special times there with our dearest friends. The decision to open it up to others was a good one, and we hope that you and yours will continue to stay with us and cherish the memories you make here as much as we do ours. Best wishes from the Owners and Management.

Great Guana Cay settlement was established by Loyalists after the Amercian Revolutionary War. Primarily a fishing village, many of the Loyalist cottages still stand, arranged around a natural harbour. Kidd Harbour was named after the pirate, William Kidd (from Wikipedia). The living is slow and easy, so it is a great place to kick back and relax in safety and comfort.
