PREVIOUS GUESTS WROTE.....: For Jane & myself this is our second visit to Tivauche. We believe it is a most beautiful gite in one of the most lovely areas of France. Jane & Alec, California. - We could not have asked for a more beautiful place to stay! All of our day trips have been great - Vezelay was our favourite, but the best part of our trip has been coming 'home' to this amazing gite, sitting outside with a glass of wine, enjoying the beautiful view. Scott & Christine, Georgia. - One of our best holidays ever. We could easily have stayed longer; there is so much to see. Andrew & Susanne, Surrey. - We have rented many gites across France, this being our first visit to Burgundy. Never have we experienced this excellent recipe of luxury, cleanliness and warmth to such an extent. Congratulations to you both. We hope to see you again. Heather & Peter, Devon.

Fabulous place in the French countryside
Jenny and Bill really know what they are doing! They have thought of everything to make visitors' stays pleasant and welcome. The place is beautifully set up, with the best equiped kitchen! I mean really! They even have petanque boules to play out front. They provide a comprehensive set of house instructions, and there are lots of brochures and information about the Burgundy region in the house. The back garden is lovely, with a nice covered patio and table for dining al fresco. High recommended!

An amazing month's stay in Burgundy- great location and hosts!
We will fondly cherish the time we spent at Bill and Jenny’s in Tivauche. Our goal was to relax and bond as a family, and our time at Chez Higgs helped us do just that. The farmhouse is rustic, homely yet modern and well-appointed for a family. It offers access to incredible natural beauty. We loved the beautiful vistas, sunrises and sunsets that could be enjoyed from the backyard or any of the multiple local trails. It’s conveniently located 15-20 mins from notable towns and landmarks in Burgundy like Semur-en-Auxois, Epoisses, Avallon, Flavigny and many others. Bill and Jenny’s thoughtful hospitality was the icing on the cake. So in a nutshell - we highly recommend a visit to Chez Higgs!

Gorgeous location, wonderful apartment and great hosts
Bill and Jenny’s place was a perfect setting to unwind and enjoy the beautiful countryside. The charming house had everything we could have asked for: comfortable beds, spacious bathrooms, plenty of storage space and the kitchen was very well outfitted. The little hamlet was always quiet and the surrounding fields were perfect for after dinner walks. A couple of nearby towns had all the supplies anyone would need. Bill is a lovely host and shared great information for day trips around the area. This was one of our favorite vacation rentals ever!

Fabulous experience!
This is a beautiful property, especially if you enjoy being away from the bustle of the city. Bill and Jenny provide a well equipped and super comfortable gite and couldn't be more accommodating. The weather turned cold for us, and the fireplace was cozy and charming. We hope to return again for a longer stay. There are many attractions close by that we didn't have time to visit.

A Wonderful Month in Burgundy!
We just stayed in this lovely Farmhouse for a month and enjoyed it tremendously! The owners Bill & Jenny are beyond helpful, and the home is very well appointed and welcoming! We visited numerous villages, Chateaus, Abbeys and loved returning to the lovely views from the back yard of this home daily. Highly recommend!

Tivauche
Thank you Bill and Jenny for another wonderful stay at Tivauche. We had 19 restful days of sleeping late, eating great food and just chilling out in general, which is what we both needed. Had a delicious lunch at le Medieval in Mont St Jean, and stumbled into l'Auberge du Chateau in Epoisses, what a great place! Visited our usual haunts like le Marrioner, la Mirabelle, and Restaurant les Millesimes in Noyer-sur-Serin, and were please to see les Minimes in Semur has been reopened with gargantuan portions. We highly recommend a stay at Tivauche for anyone traveling to Burgundy!

Truly Lovely, Elegant property
This is a beautifully, thoughtfully restored property, decorated and appointed elegantly, with excellent taste, historical perspective and an eye to superior quality. Furniture, finishing, appliances, etc. are all first class and complete. Virtually everything positive in previous reviews is borne out in fact. There is no holiday rental or cottage furnishing feel here. Anyone planning on staying in this part of Burgundy should very seriously consider this. The owners are friendly, helpful and accommodating. In my book, any owners who provide not only a CD selection but one that includes good opera and jazz are a cut above. There is something truly special about being able to sit outside in early evening with a glass of good wine, looking out on to a painter’s landscape with La Traviata playing in the background. We stayed only for a week, but this is a place that one could live in for much, much longer very comfortably and happily. There is not a lot that we might have done differently, or could have done better, were this property our own. The location is quiet, relaxing and good for exploring the less foreign-tourist-frequented parts of Burgundy. (The Cöte d’Or, Dijon and Macon, however, are at least an hour away by autoroute.)

Another wonderful stay at Tivauche
This is easily the 6th or 7th time we have stayed at Bill and Jenny’s gite in Tivauche. My husband and I both love it and always feel as if we are coming to our “home away from home”. The farm house is so warm and inviting with spacious, well furnished rooms and beautiful views of the Auxois countryside. The terrace is a great place to relax in the spring and fall overlooking the lush green hills . The house is very clean and immaculately maintained and the surrounding countryside is so picturesque. One of our favorite things to do is to search out yet another charming village where I can dream of owning a wonderful stone house -there are many charming villages so it’s hard to choose a favorite . Semur en Auxois, the medieval walled city 12 km away has about everything one could need and an excellent artisan boulangerie with the most delicious almond croissants ever! Hint: order your almond croissants for pick-up the next morning and they will be freshly baked and still warm when you arrive. Le Marrioner in Buffon overlooking the Burgundy canal and La Mirabelle at the roundabout at St Remy are not to be missed. There are endless sites to see, from Vezelay (Mont St Michelle without water) to Chateauneuf looming ominously on its promontory, the Forge du Buffon to the medieval wine town of Beaune to endless chateaux such as Tanlay or Ancy le Franc, Burgundy has it all! Everyone that we have met and come to know from visiting here for years is friendly and helpful, from the pharmacist in Semur to the florist and especially the boulangerie. We will keep returning to Tivauche to relax, refuel and refresh and hope to stay two weeks in the Spring of 2020. Bill and Jenny and their two lovely daughters whom we have watched grow up are a delightful family, always ready to help with anything but not intrusive. Anyone thinking about a trip to Burgundy would love this gite and the Higgs family. We can’t wait to go back to Tivauche.

Great Farmhouse in Lovely Setting
We loved this farmhouse. It looked exactly as we would have expected a French country farmhouse to look – the old world charm of beamed ceilings, stone fireplace, shuttered windows – with tastefully added modern conveniences. The views of the countryside from the garden and the upstairs, vaulted ceiling bedroom were gorgeous. Tivauche is a hamlet of about a dozen homes without any shops so it is very tranquil. It’s an easy 5 minute drive to Epoisses which has all of the typical village shops and a charming chateau. Although it seems remote we were less than an hour away from any our planned excursions. Bill and Jenny, the owners, live right next door. They were available if we needed them (which we didn’t) but otherwise we only knew if they were home if we could see their car in the courtyard.

Beautiful setting, extremely well appointed gite
This is a lovely gite in a small Burgundy hamlet. The views of the rolling hills are lovely, especially from the upstairs bedroom in the early morning. The farmhouse is well appointed with Gien porcelain and Crabtree and Evelyn toiletries. All of the rooms are tastefully decorated. I could have stayed here for a very long time.

Lovely
We, a family of four, stayed at the gite for a week. It has been a lovely week. To start with the Bill and Jenny, who made us feel more than welcome and at home. The cottage, well appointed, larger than it shows in the pictures, good kitchen, enormous fireplace, the surroundings, lovely sleepy medieval hamlets, Tivauche le Haut itself, and finally the weather, all lovely! Because is had been so cold there were no trees in bloom, but very slowly you saw spring starting. The whole Tivauche experience was very relaxing, and we can certainly recommend the house. One small remark, the downstairs bed is 140 so excellent for the young:-). Upstairs 160 in a very large, and nice bedroom. And a view not only from the bedroom window, but also from under the shower! Hope to be back soon.

A Gem in Burgundy
We rented this beautiful French farmhouse in early April. It was accurately described and more. The property was situated on a hill which gave it a commanding view and a perfect setting. The area was very tranquil and just right for beautiful country walks. The interior of the house was very well maintained and furnished to a high standard which made everything extremely comfortable. Our favorite thing was experiencing all the wonderful Burgundian adventures and then returning to our cozy fire and a glass of red wine. The house is centrally located and convenient to Beaune, Vezalay, Abbye de Fontenay and Chateneuf. The owners were fabulous right from the start. They were easy to work with and most accommodating. Bill set up a wonderful bike trip along the canal. It was one of the highlights of our trip. We travel frequently in Europe and have very high expectations, We have to say that this special property fulfilled all our dreams.

Can't Wait To Go Back!
We visited Tivauche in April 2011, the 4th time we have stayed there in as many years. We love it so much and will be booking our return trip shortly, most likely for a two week stay this time. The house is large and lovely, fully equipped with all the modern conveniences yet retaining the charm of an original Burgundian farmhouse. The views from the rear patio are beautiful, particuarly in the Spring when the hills are brillant green spotted with bursts of vibrant color from the flowering trees. Bill and Jenny have put much thought into making a stay at Tivauche so delightful that you will want to return again and again. Tivauche is a quiet hamlet but close to everything one would need - 3km to Epoisse with a wonderful boulangerie and updated small grocery store, 8 km to the medieval walled city Semur-en-Auxois with it's imposing walls and towers, excellent Atac Supermarche and fantastic charcuterie just past the cathedral. Burgundy is so beautiful with so many things to see and do -Noyers-sur-Serein, Vezelay, Flavigney, Chateauneuf, Beaune, and Cluny to name a few. So many chateaux, serene abbeys, the Forges du Buffon (where we had a wonderful picnic with friends by the Burgundy Canal), beautiful villages with half-timbered houses and, many argue and I agree, the best food in all of France. La Mirabelle on the St. Remy round-about and Les Millesimes Restaurant in Noyers-sur-Serein are both superb and Michelin rated. Auberge des Chenets on N6 just beyond Avallon towards Vezelay is another lovely restaurant. Too many great places to eat, too many things to see and do. I wish we could visit more, so once a year will have to suffice for the time being. Only 11 more months to go - can't wait to get back to Tivauche!

The Farm house was comfortable and well appointed and decorated. It was16 degrees when we arrived and the Owner suggested we use the open fire which was very nice. Eventually we asked them to turn on the heating as the cold persisted. We had a very comfortable stay in an interesting and beautiful part of France. The peace and quiet, apart from the occasional happy dogs, was lovely. Fully recommend the House and the area.

A pleasant stay despite bad weather
The house is situated in an agricultural area. The photograph gives the impression that it is a stand alone location, but the house makes part of a series of 3 clustered houses. It is a beautiful, silent area and the only thong you hear are cows or sheep. The house was clean and well equipped and it was a perfect place to stay with two couples ( early seventies ). Unfortunately the weather extremely bad and very wet !! One of the mornings my wife went done to empty the dishwasher, but on the floor was 1 cm. water. The heavy rain found its way into the house through the from door. The carper was soaked and we had job to make it dry. The open fire was lovely, but two days later just before dinner we received a second "gift " from heaven and the fight with water started again. We had help from Jenny ( Bill was om a trip ) and we survived. We think that a drainage pipe before the door is essential. Despite the weather, we had a good time there.

About the host

Hosted by Bill & Jenny

Host profile image
Bill has always worked in tourism primarily operating hotel barges and organizing tours in the Burgundy region of France. Jenny, a Prue Leith trained chef, left her London catering business for a two week holiday in Burgundy and never returned!
Both Bill and Jenny intended to move on from Burgundy, but with the addition of dogs and children and the realisation that they already lived in one of the most beautiful parts of Europe, why change a thing?

Why they chose this property

For seven years we lived a 10 minute walk away from this property. The last two of these years were spent scouring the region looking for an interesting place to buy and renovate - it was a satisfying discovery when this search finally brought us to the perfect farmhouse on our doorstep!

What makes this property unique

We often say, 'there's magic in the air in Tivauche'!
The locals love it here and visitors keep coming back time after time - naturally we do everything we can to make your stay comfortable, but we cannot take all of the credit for people's attachment to Tivauche-le-Haut.
The view from the terrace looking towards the Morvan park is wonderful. At night the same terrace makes a perfect star gazing platform as there's no light pollution.
With our rural location, we sometimes feel wonderfully 'lost in France', and yet day trips to Paris are possible as it's only one hour by TGV train + 15 minutes to Montbard station.
Tours can be arranged for wine tasting, biking, walking, bird watching, ballooning and world war two resistance sites
Massage, yoga and pilates are also available.
Breakfast baskets, lunches, dinners and picnics are available.
