I am a former sports journalist - Karen is still a brilliant yoga teacher. We are in our mid-40s and now have two grown-up children. We are passionate about Newcastle and the North East, and corny as it sounds, passionate about property too. Our apartment, named Coalminer's Cottage, has been designed and decorated to reflect the industrial heritage of the North East. We have completed a sympathetic restoration of this Victorian building, with exposed colliery brick, oak panelling, and revitalised heritage furniture coupled with unique hand-made pieces. We provide luxury mattresses and towels and Egyptian cotton white bed linen. We want every minute of your stay to be in a memorable and comfortable apartment. You will be provided with fresh towels, two pillows for each bed (firm and soft) and there is a private sink and mirror in both bedrooms. Hairdryer, iron, ironing board and vacuum cleaner are also provided. There is a large double bedroom with king size bed, a spacious twin room, a living room with oak fireplace, a large kitchen (with dishwasher, dryer, washer, oven, microwave and fridge freezer) and a fully-tiled bathroom with large walk-in shower.

Fast cable wifi is free of charge and our Samsung Smart TV provides instant access to all catch-up services. There is a electric stove, USB sockets in the kitchen, DAB radio and docking/charging station for your iphone or ipod. We have spent a great deal of time and care to provide a comfortable home-from-home, close to all the amenities that Tyneside has to offer. Please respect this, and other homeowners in what is a residential area. This is not the apartment for you if you want to have loud parties late into the night. We are a £5 taxi ride from Newcastle's Quayside (one of the city's prime locations for bars and restaurants) and a £7 fare from Newcastle Central Railway Station (2 miles away). At the end of Rectory Road, the No 54 bus takes you into Newcastle's city centre in just 7 minutes. The apartment is just half a mile from the A1, so offers easy access for travel north and south. a 20-minute walk or a 5-minute bus ride takes you to Gateshead town centre, where you can access the Metro network for underground rail travel to the coast (South Shields, Tynemouth or Whitley Bay) and across Tyneside.

Amazing Property in Perfect Location
Excellent property every you need, like a home from home. Everything is new in the property and decorated magnificently. Located excellent for Newcastle Centre and the Metrocentre. I will definitely stay again and would recommend to any future prospective guests.
Stylish and Comfortable
Lovely place - really comfortable but stylish too. Nice extras like really fast wifi, digital radio, docking station, but the place, although clearly just done up, has a homely traditional feel, and we liked the oak fireplace in the living room too. Apart from the park and a couple of cafes, not loads to do within walking distance but we headed for the city centre anyway - just 5 minutes away in an Uber.
Very nice apartment
We had a lovely time in Gateshead. The apartment was immaculately clean and tidy. Everything we needed was there and the atmosphere of the apartment was welcoming and cosy.
It is walking distance from 'The Little Theatre' and we enjoyed the panto there on the day we arrived, so it was a great start to the holiday!
Dylan contacted us soon after we arrived to check if everything was ok, which it was. It was thoughtful, especially in the run up to Christmas.
We would like to come back and would recommend staying here again.

Coalminer’s Cottage is the perfect gateway to exploring Newcastle upon Tyne and the North East - long known to be a world-class weekend destination.
Newcastle was voted the best UK city to visit by Guardian readers last year - and is regularly named in lists of top worldwide cities for weekend breaks.
Our apartment is in Gateshead, just a mile from the A1 motorway and on the southern brink of the Tyneside urban area. Access to Coalminer’s Cottage is easy and parking is free - but with excellent regular bus services on the doorstep - and a taxi into the city costing £7 to £8 - there is no need to use your car from the moment you arrive to the moment you leave.
You are a stone’s throw from the beautiful Saltwell Park, known as ‘The People’s Park’ - with its boating lake, wooded areas and cafe, while the historic Little Theatre is just around the corner.
You are less than two miles from Newcastle city centre, and even closer to the stunning Quayside, a shared jewel in Newcastle and Gateshead’s crown. Here you can visit the Baltic Arts centre, and the Sage music venue, and take a walk over the Millennium Bridge which spans the Tyne.
If shopping is your thing, you will be in heaven - you’re less than three miles from the biggest shopping centre in Europe, Gateshead’s MetroCentre, and 2.5 miles from the shops Newcastle’s Eldon Square.
You have a wealth of pubs, clubs, bars and restaurants to choose from, as you would expect in one of the UK’s biggest and liveliest cities. World-class athletics at Gateshead International Stadium and Premier League football at Newcastle United’ St James’s Park are both on the doorstep, too.
If it’s the countryside you crave, just a few miles North and you are in the beautiful, unspoilt rural scenery of Northumberland, with rolling fields, Cheviot hills, endless sandy beaches and imposing castles.
Go west and the green valleys of Derwentside beckon, while a short drive (or a world-famous 13-mile run!) to South Shields brings a traditional Tyneside seaside resort with fairgrounds, duck ponds and mini-steam trains. Just north of the Tyne and a similar distance are Tynemouth and Whitley Bay, where, at low tide, you can walk the causeway to visit its lighthouse - one of the North East’s famous landmarks.
As for the building itself, you will be staying in a type of Victorian property unique to this region - the ‘Tyneside flat’. These buildings are purpose-built terrace flats and maisonettes, built over a century ago in two or three storeys, which originally provided homes for Tynesiders across the region - many of them working in the coalmines and shipyards of an area which was fast becoming a powerhouse of the industrial revolution.
We have tried to show a hint of the area’s rich industrial heritage with some of the old photos on display in the apartment. This area - Bensham, Gateshead - is changing fast but has long been one of the traditional heartlands of working-class Tyneside.
