About John/Maureen Forney

Your hosts are John and Maureen Forney and our partner Jim Sorensen. John learned to ski here and at Dodge Ridge as a child while growing up in Modesto. He made trips to Bear Valley often on the ski bus with Modesto Ski Club. Maureen made a trip here with John one winter day and took cross-country ski lessons. Since she loves all things aerobic and outdoors, she instantly fell in love with what Bear Valley had to offer: kids, dogs, outdoors, and new sports to try after years of running. John loves to ski at the resort, but thoroughly enjoys skiing on the meadow, fishing, and mountain bike riding in the high country.

Jim Sorensen and Maureen have been professional colleagues in San Leandro. They have coached hundreds of track and cross-country runners. Jim was an Olympic Trials qualifiers at the 1500 meters and holds Master's records, both world and American, at the 800 and 1500 meters. Jim doesn't visit Bear Valley as much as he would like, since he teaches, coaches, and competes all over the US.

If you asked us what we like best about BV, we would tell you it must be the freedom young people enjoy here. Our daughters and friends have tromped and biked all over and we only worried about falls and spills. Our dogs can romp here. Our friend's children have learned to swim in a lake, rappel, play soccer, go bouldering, and kayak here. Star gazing with city kids can be a transformative experience.

The daughters are grown, finished college, and love to bring their 20-something friends here and escape the pressures of their new careers.

John is a retired firefighter-paramedic from City of Berkeley. Maureen retired from teaching in 2016 and now works as an environmental activist. Jim teaches PE, coaches, and is AD at Bancroft Middle School, San Leandro. He splits his time between California and Arizona, where his bride has a thriving real estate business.

Why John/Maureen Forney chose Gold Country & High Sierra

We came for the winters and stayed for the summers. All of us work and live in an urban environment that involves constant and demanding interaction with the public. In Bear Valley, the pace is slow, the nights are still, the bald eagles float over the lake, and the coyotes howl at night. Here, we can sleep until hungry and eat until sleepy. In between, the outdoors offers us boundless delight and entertainment.

What makes this condo unique

The smell of the woods. A bird's call. The osprey at Lake Alpine. Children giggling. The fishing in early June has been fantastic! Fresh trout from the lake. The mountain bike riding is superb and the wild flowers. Quiet.

Very Lovely Home

  • 5 of 5

The homeowners kept in touch with us months prior to our arrival with tips on weather, things to do around the location and much more. Highly recommend!

Great place to stay!

  • 5 of 5

John and Maureen were perfect hosts, easy to work with, and very hospitable. They offered information about the area, where to eat, and if there was anything that we needed to be aware of. Their place was clean and fit our group of 3 very well. It was also nice to be so close to the lake and where we wanted to hike. Would definitely recommend to anyone.

Compact, comfortable, and convenient

  • 4 of 5

Very nice owners made our last-minute arrangements go smoothly, and the stay as trouble-free as one can hope. The one tiny hitch they handled well. Maureen and John really made an effort to make us welcome.

The unit has a small, functional kitchen (no dishwasher, but otherwise complete), a small dining table in the living area which also sports the bunk bed, and upstairs a comfortable loft bedroom with lots of closet space for bulky winter wear and a clean and functional bathroom.

The fan in the bathroom and the motor on the fridge are a bit loud, so if you're more sensitive to sound than exhausted by the exertions of the day, you could find that a drawback. Also, there's no ski closet available for the unit, but renting gear at BV is easier than lots of places. The shuttle to BV stops close by, but the village lodge is about a ten-minute walk.

This is not a luxury condo, but if you're here for skiing or summer sports in a group of 2-5 people, this is a great way to be cozy at night and outdoors all day. In addition, my kids approve of the high-speed wi-fi connection. They're connoisseurs, so that means something!

Cozy, clean, and and comfortable.

  • 4 of 5

We found the condominium to be well-suited to our needs for my husband and myself. The place was clean, well stocked, and comfortable. It is also very convenient, being located in Bear Valley Village just off Hwy. 4. The only negative that we found was that the tv screen was small by today's standards and a little difficult to view from the futon/couch (you were looking at the screen from the side.) There were 4 chairs around the table facing the screen however that could be used for viewing directly.

The condo worked perfectly for our little family: Mom, Dad, and two young boys.

  • 5 of 5

We spent a few days (Sunday-Tuesday) in Bear Valley in late March (2017) and had a great time. The condo worked great for the four of us. We slept, cooked, showered, watched movies, and used the condo as a basecamp for our skiing and snowshoeing adventures. John and Maureen were very helpful. We hope to be back next winter, and perhaps this summer!
