Overview

About the property

4 Bedrooms, 2 Bathrooms, Sleeps 8

Designer's vacation home fully loaded with attention to detail and views of the Collegiate Peaks and Sawatch Range. Our cabin is located in Buena Vista, Colorado. Perfect for families, conveniently located in town and close to everything: restaurants, shopping, parks, golf club , skiing, and the Arkansas River amenities. "BV" is a great locale to serve as a central 'base camp' for day trippin' to Salida, Aspen, Canon City, Gunnison, Crested Butte, Leadville, Breckenridge, Twin Peaks, Vail, etc.) and it offers a wide variety of activities year round for the whole family to enjoy.

BV is the primo spot for outdoor & river sports such as hiking, snow skiing(Monarch is 45 mins away, Cooper is one hr away), rafting, kayaking, biking, paddle boarding, horseback riding, 4wheeling(Jeep & ATV rentals close by), fishing, hunting, climbing, golfing, prospecting (The Prospectors TV show is filmed 20 mins away),snowmobiling, dog sledding through the snow, etc.! The trendy South Main area is close by and offers some of the best river sports, outdoor concerts, restaurants, shops, as well as a great rock climb for the kids and adults. Like to view wildlife? Just outside our cabin, you'll see elk, deer, fox and hummingbirds (and yet, you're still in town). Ok, and maybe the occasional bear that wanders down into town in the summer, if you're lucky to spot one! Other fun things to do are : soaking in geo-thermal hot springs, visiting ghost towns, perusing artful galleries, antiquing, shopping great hip clothing boutiques and just hanging out by the park in town, or the river park in hip South Main neighborhood.

In the summertime, catch a movie the ole fashioned way at the Comanche Drive-In Movie Theater, just 3 miles west of the one BV traffic light.

Like a good beer? Be sure to check out Eddyline Brewery for great craft beers!

Our home welcomes you with 4 bedrooms and 2 full bathrooms, gourmet stocked kitchen, comfy linens and comfy beds. We also have an aspen lined private fenced backyard with a nice bbq area and a fire pit. Pretty garden in the summertime. Have your morning coffee or tea on the front porch or in the privacy of the backyard.

About Jeanette Van Wicklen

We're from Spicewood, Tx. (just outside of Austin) I'm an Interior Designer and my husband is a Family Dentist. We're parents and grandparents! Our family loves the great outdoors and we wanted a place to experience the many amenities here all year round. We also love to share our cabin with our renters so that they can also experience the amazing beauty of this area!

Jeanette Van Wicklen purchased this cabin in 2014

Why Jeanette Van Wicklen chose Buena Vista

We chose BV because of it's amazing central CO locale and because the climate here beckons us to be outdoors all year round. My husband is also an avid Enduro dirt bike rider and loves the many public trails in this area of Colorado. The people are friendly and the town is quaint, charming and full of mining history. The town has a "boho vibe" and is very unpretentious and we like that laid back spirit. We fell in love with this house when we first saw it because of it's unique details, the pretty summer garden and the amazing views all around the property. BV is located in what they call the 'banana belt' and therefore has many sunny days, yet we experience all 4 seasons here in all it's beauty! We also love in the summer, to day trip over to Aspen via the Independence Pass! (in my opinion, one of the most gorgeous drives I've ever been on)

What makes this cabin unique

The location of this house is awesome, whether you want to drive, bicycle or go for a scenic walk. The Arkansas River is conveniently close by for white water rafting, fly fishing, paddle boarding and kayaking. The charming & friendly City Market grocery is very close too. The town has many beautiful hiking trails and biking trails and has wonderful streets for cruiser bikes. The central CO locale is great for day trips to Salida, Aspen, Twin Lakes, Leadville, Minturn, Vail, Breckenridge, Gunnison, Crested Butte, Monarch Mountain, St. Elmo's, etc. (too many possibilities!) Because of our great climate here, you can enjoy amenities here year round. Did you know they film the Prospector's show here too? (and be sure to check out the outdoors Mineral and Gem show here each August, it's awesome!) And the summertime drive-in movie theater & the numerous outdoor concerts at South Main!

Guestbook comments from the owner

Wonderful weekend in a beautiful cabin in the most charming of Colorado towns! Crossman Cabin had everything we needed and more! The owners have done a lovely job decorating the place, too!

Notes:
In the winter you will feel very comfy with radiant floor heating and also radiator type heaters upstairs. Usually when the downstairs floor heaters are on, it provides enough heat so that you don't even need the upstairs heaters on.. We also hook up portable a/c units when the weather rarely gets hot in BV. The house stays at a comfy climate all year round! ....most people sleep with the windows open and are fine. We also use the fans in each room *We have a Rinnai Hot Water heater which is AWEsome in this area. It provides hot water instantly...(which can be a pain in houses that don't have this and the water can be ice cold!)* We also like the fact that the walls are thick and guests have privacy. And the backyard is very private. We recently built a gate in the driveway for add'l safety for lil ones when visiting.

Beautiful cabin in a wonderful location.

  • 5 of 5

This cabin was the perfect get away spot to experience the area. It was incredibly well maintained and spotless. The outdoor fireplace and yard was a wonderful location to enjoy coffee. We highly recommend this.

Darling cozy cabin

  • 5 of 5

This cabin is amazing. Beautifully decorated modern farmhouse style cabin. Beds are comfy, linens are high quality, and the attention to every detail is perfect. The paint choices, bathroom finishes, stocked kitchen, and the living area was perfect for our family. The back yard is so inviting and we loved using the fire pit! It very close to Main Street and the grocery store. We would have loved to stay longer and we plan to be back again and would highly recommend this rental to anyone looking for a fun Colorado getaway. BV has lots to offer and you are close to Nathrop, Salida, and Leadville. Jeanette was easy to communicate with and made the entire process run smoothly! Enjoy your stay!

Unfortunately more CONS than PROS

  • 2 of 5

PROS:

The cabin looks nice and cozy, not exactly like in the pictures but it is very close to it.

CONS:

- In the patio there is a grill that we couldn't use because was VERY gross, have no idea when was cleaned last time, there were food/meat leftovers on it and we decided not to use it.

- Downtown Buena Vista that is very cute (shown in the last picture) is not where the cabin is, you need a car to get there, the cabin is in the not-very-nice part of Buena Vista

- There is a pretty high cleaning fee but on the check out instructions there are a bunch of requests like removing sheets from the beds, starting washing machine with towels, starting the dishwasher, bring the garbage out, ... so I wonder why I have to pay the cleaning fee if I have to do all these stuff. In all my experiences as traveller I've never been requested to pay a fee and also do half of the cleaning.

- communication for check-in wasn't easy, sent multiple messages to see if it was possible a slightly earlier check-in but didn't receive an answer that arrived the day after when we already checked-in

-shower drain upstairs wasn't working and we had to fix it

For this high price a night in Buena Vista I was definitely expecting something better.

Owner's Response: Dear Christian, We're so sorry that you experienced more cons! To be quite honest, this is our first summer to not have had the opportunity to check on our cabin b/c of various personal reasons. We rely on our staff and our renters to let us know when there's a maintenance issue. Unfortunately the grill should've been clean and we will address the issues with our cleaning crew. (i wouldn't have liked seeing that dirty grill either, so i do understand your review!). I will have to ck our listing pics b/c i think somewhere in our description we mention we're "close to town" (which we are) but never felt we misled our renters that we're downtown. Our street is an eclectic mix for sure but we've never ever felt unsafe there and bike everywhere from there (or else we'd never invest in a bad locale). Our friends live there and we had researched MANY areas before buying, and feel we're in a good area. You can walk to the huge music festivals just down the street also. On the cleaning...we travel alot and we were just copying what some of the ck out procedures were in places we've gone. (i can ask our housekeeper about leaving out the "sheets off" thing..but the other stuff is pretty standard) We feel the cleaning fee is very fair there. On the communication, I'm honestly not sure what's going on with my acct.. I just had a renter last wknd as me a question, and I JUST saw it in my email today! (she wrote it on last Saturday!). I will put in a help request to VRBO on this....On the shower drain, we will send this today to our maintenance guy and see what's going on. I truly appreciate your feedback so much. We're finally visiting in a few wks and can't wait to ck on things. We do appreciate your business and feedback. Again, we're very sorry you experienced all this.... Sincerely, Jeanette

Perfect mountain cabin

  • 5 of 5

This quaint stylish cabin made our stay perfect! Both the indoor and outdoor space is warm and welcoming. Updated with every amenity needed complete with an outdoor space that felt like an English garden with seating under the stars. The location - just off a main road is close to restaurants and the city market grocery. The cabin is also close to parks, a golf course and South Main. We LOVED our stay. If we come back to Buena Vista we will definitely stay here!

Good, but uncomfortably warm at night for sleeping.

  • 4 of 5

The cabin was very nice, but the people in the upstairs bedrooms had a very difficult time sleeping because of the hot rooms. The largest room had an ac unit and was better than the others. All of the rest of the cabin and it's features were wonderful.

Owner's Response: Thank you Steven for your great review. We have heard recently that BV has had an unusually warmer summer this year. I'll discuss this with my husband because it sounds like we need to add units to the other 2 rooms. In the past the one large unit was sufficient for the whole upstairs. We appreciate your comments especially since we can't be there much. We appreciate your business and want to make all our renters comfy, so we'll look into the new units. Thanks again for taking the time to review. Have a great summer, Jeanette
