About the property

4 Bedrooms, 2 Bathrooms, Sleeps 8

Designer's vacation home fully loaded with attention to detail and gorgeous views of the Collegiate Peaks and Sawatch Range. The Sawatch Range is a narrow strip of the Continental Divide containing fifteen 14er's, most of which dominate the landscape just to the west of US 24, from Leadville to Salida. Included in this impressive array is the highest point in Colorado (Mt. Elbert) and the famed Collegiate Peaks. The Sawatch peaks are famous for their numerous hiking trails, enough to keep you busy for a lifetime. There are nontechnical routes up all these peaks, and accessibility is easy even for 2-wheel drive vehicles. Some of the peaks are good for mountain biking! Our cabin is located in Buena Vista (in Spanish it means 'good view')and the locals call it 'BV'. Perfect for families, conveniently located in town and close to everything: restaurants, shopping, parks, golf club , skiing, and the Arkansas River amenities. BV is a great locale to serve as a central 'base camp' for day trippin' to Salida, Aspen, Canon City, Gunnison, Crested Butte, Leadville, Breckenridge, Twin Peaks, Vail, etc.) and it offers a wide variety of activities year round for the whole family to enjoy.

BV is the primo spot for outdoor & river sports such as hiking, snow skiing(Monarch is 45 mins away, Cooper is one hr away), rafting, kayaking, biking, paddle boarding, horseback riding, 4wheeling(Jeep & ATV rentals close by), fishing, hunting, climbing, golfing, prospecting (The Prospectors TV show is filmed 20 mins away),snowmobiling, dog sledding through the snow, etc.! The trendy South Main area is close by and offers some of the best river sports, outdoor concerts, restaurants, shops, as well as a great rock climb for the kids and adults. Like to view wildlife? Just outside our cabin, you'll see elk, deer, fox and hummingbirds (and yet, you're still in town). Ok, and maybe the occasional bear that wanders down into town in the summer, if you're lucky to spot one! Other fun things to do are : soaking in geo-thermal hot springs, visiting ghost towns, perusing artful galleries, antiquing, shopping great hip clothing boutiques and just hanging out by the park in town, or the river park in hip South Main neighborhood.

In the summertime, catch a movie the ole fashioned way at the Comanche Drive-In Movie Theater, just 3 miles west of the one BV traffic light.

Like a good beer? Be sure to check out Eddyline Brewery for great craft beers!

Our home welcomes you with 4 bedrooms and 2 full bathrooms, gourmet stocked kitchen, comfy linens and comfy beds. We also have an aspen lined private fenced backyard with a nice bbq area and a fire pit. Or have your morning coffee or tea on the front porch. The views out all the windows are gorgeous!

About Jeanette Van Wicklen

We're from Spicewood, Tx. (just outside of Austin) I'm an Interior Designer and my husband is a Dentist/Orthodontist. We're parents and grandparents! Our family loves the great outdoors and we wanted a place to experience the many amenities here all year round. We also love to share our cabin with our renters so that they can also experience the amazing beauty of this area!

Jeanette Van Wicklen purchased this cabin in 2014

Why Jeanette Van Wicklen chose South Central

We chose BV because of it's amazing central CO locale and because the climate here beckons us to be outdoors all year round. My husband is also an avid Enduro dirt bike rider and loves the many public trails in this area of Colorado. The people are friendly and the town is quaint, charming and full of mining history. The town has a "boho vibe" and is very unpretentious and we like that laid back spirit. We fell in love with this house when we first saw it because of it's unique details, the pretty summer garden and the amazing views all around the property. BV is located in what they call the 'banana belt' and therefore has many sunny days, yet we experience all 4 seasons here in all it's beauty! We also love in the summer, to day trip over to Aspen via the Independence Pass! (in my opinion, one of the most gorgeous drives I've ever been on)

What makes this cabin unique

The location of this house is awesome, whether you want to drive, bicycle or go for a scenic walk. The Arkansas River is conveniently close by for white water rafting, fly fishing, paddle boarding and kayaking. The charming & friendly City Market grocery is very close too. The town has many beautiful hiking trails and biking trails and has wonderful streets for cruiser bikes. The central CO locale is great for day trips to Salida, Aspen, Twin Lakes, Leadville, Minturn, Vail, Breckenridge, Gunnison, Crested Butte, Monarch Mountain, St. Elmo's, etc. (too many possibilities!) Because of our great climate here, you can enjoy amenities here year round. Did you know they film the Prospector's show here too? (and be sure to check out the outdoors Mineral and Gem show here each August, it's awesome!) And the summertime drive-in movie theater & the numerous outdoor concerts at South Main!

Guestbook comments from the owner

Wonderful weekend in a beautiful cabin in the most charming of Colorado towns! Crossman Cabin had everything we needed and more! The owners have done a lovely job decorating the place, too!

Great Mountain Retreat

  • 5 of 5

We loved every part of the house and Jeanette was very responsive. The bedrooms were great for the adults in our party and the private yard was great for the little ones in our group. We enjoyed the high ceilings and open plan on the ground floor and the fire pit in the backyard. The location of the house is great, it's near downtown and it was close enough for riding our mountain bikes out the front door to the trails on the east side of the Arkansas. Be sure to checkout the new Jailhouse too for a great beer selection. We hope to make it back for another great weekend in BV.

Awesome stay - can't wait to come back!

  • 5 of 5

We stayed at the Crossman Cabin over Labor Day weekend and were thrilled with our choice! The cabin was impeccably decorated, clean, spacious, and conveniently located. Kitchen was fully stocked and the entire house was spotless. The yard was super cozy and we used the fire pit each night. We took the short bike ride into Main Street each night for dinner as well and loved how perfect the location was. The owners have thought of everything! Perfect for our two tiny toddlers as well (we found a baby gate and high chair in the garage!). Our 2 families of 3 (6 total) were comfortable with more than enough room to spread out. Still can't get over how perfectly every room was decorated! Can't wait to return!!

BV Cabin

  • 5 of 5

Our family of 5 had a great time in this cabin. It was as cute as could be. It had everything we needed and met my high cleanliness standards. Everyone had their own room, allowing for a little privacy when anyone wanted it (2 kids are in college so that was a biggie for us). We are familiar with the area and went there for rafting, hiking and fly fishing. We would definitely stay there again!

Very comfortable, conveniently located, impeccably decorated, and well-stocked

  • 5 of 5

Crossman Cabin was a perfect spot for our girls weekend. The 7 of us spent a very comfortable weekend catching up around the fire pit, cooking in the well-stocked kitchen, and enjoying the amazing surrounding area. The beds were also incredibly comfortable. I would stay here again in a heartbeat!

Notes:
*Steve Jacobson is the builder of this quality home and he's known in the area to build a solid high quality home. If you decide you'd like to build in the area , we highly recommend him. * In the winter you will feel very comfy with radiant floor heating and also radiator type heaters upstairs. Usually when the downstairs floor heaters are on, it provides enough heat so that you don't even need the upstairs heaters on.. The house stays at a comfy climate all year round! * we might add some mini a/c units for those RARE hot days in BV...right now we don't have any but haven't had any complaints...most people sleep with the windows open and are fine. We also use the fans in each room *We have a Rinnai Hot Water heater which is AWEsome in this area. It provides hot water instantly...(which can be a pain in houses that don't have this and the water can be ice cold!)* We also like the fact that the walls are thick and guests have privacy. And the backyard is very private.
