About the property

A whimsical vacation like no other. Private, Hot Tub, Gas Fire Place...

NASA has the field behind us pinned for Greatest Duration for the 2017 solar eclipse. Until we know how we are going to approach this we are not taking any requests for reservations. When we know what we are doing we will list it on our website and here on VRBO.

Since it is so beautiful where we are, we would love to have you stay with us at other times. :)

Spacious yet cozy romantic luxury vacation getaway for two. The two can be lovers, friends, doesn't matter to us. The bed is big, the bathroom is accessible only through a hall off the bedroom, and the place is splendid.

Guests of the Cove have a private trail that meanders through the short stretch of woods to Blue Sky Vineyard.

We currently have two "Hobbit" style homes at Rocky Comfort Cabins. You can book The Cove here on VRBO.

Wrap yourself in our PLUSH SPA ROBES and step out onto your private patio just off the exquisite bedroom. Enjoy a relaxing soak in the four person hot tub while surrounded by woods, fields, and prairie.

An arched opening between the living room and bedroom allows you to view the beautiful, fully vented gas fireplace from your decadently comfortable king size bed (for an incredible night's sleep).

Leather furniture with a full recline power loveseat in the living room and leather recline reading corner.

Nine foot ceilings, arched walls, and romantic, dimmable lighting give this unique and spacious one bedroom cottage a luxurious, cozy, romantic ambiance. Sun tunnels cast natural light in the living room, kitchen, and roomy bathroom.

Round windows and wood detailing along with many more touches set this cottage apart from all the rest.

Enjoy fresh gourmet coffee with our whole coffee beans and grinder. Weekend guests and stays over four days receive farm fresh organic eggs and breakfast snack.

Partially off the grid with solar powered lighting and TV.

Comfort for the Body, Salve for the Soul

After suffering several losses in our lives during the autumn, my wife and I decided we would take a trip and spend Christmas together, just the two of us, something we had never done, as a way to disconnect from what passes for normal life and to reconnect with one another. We could not have been more fortunate than to have discovered the Hobbit House. We spent six days and five nights, and it was perfect. The home is warm and alive, just the right size for two, with everything you would want. The hosts were so thoughtful and kind that we were met, on our arrival, with a lit, gorgeous Christmas tree and a gift bag. We enjoyed preparing meals, relaxing in front of the fireplace as we watched a bit of TV, and especially savoring time in the hot tub. The feel of the hot tub allowed us to sink into total relaxation, particularly one night as we listened to the falling rain on the overhead roof. Perfect. The view from the front door is a grand expanse of land and forest, and here, one feels both apart from the world and yet a part of it. On an admirable impulse, we drove the hour to Metropolis, IL, on Christmas Eve day, and toured the Super Museum there. Otherwise, we enjoyed our days hiking the many trails in the area, spending Christmas day walking three gorgeous trails in Giant City. Thanks to Nancy and Ed, we had the most memorable and intimate Christmas of our lives, one that reminded us that magic exists.

Owner's Response: The Cove, with its soft curves, rich colors, and and calming lack of clutter, was designed with the intention of evoking a sense of peace and serenity to our guests, yet allowing new life and magic to flow back to one's heart. The expansive view suggests all the possibilities without the pressures. We felt honored to have been your hosts during such an important time for you both. Understanding the need for solace and renewal, we felt that you chose the perfect place and time to heal. Thank you for such a thoughtful, beautifully written review of your stay. We are touched. Ed and Nancy

Owner's Response: "Most relaxing two days of my life." When guests leave with that sentiment it definitely makes us feel that we are doing something right. The Cove was specifically designed to not only invoke the feeling of being in Bilbo's "Hobbit" hole, but to soften the soul and ease the mind. Curves, simple, yet elegant rooms, and just enough decor and amenities to provide comfort and luxury, yet eliminate clutter. Would Bilbo frown upon the term, Zen like? I hope not! :) The mattress was also specifically designed for us by a local mattress company and the four poster bed was hand crafted by Ed. We also provide Isotonic memory foam pillows for the ultimate sleeping experience. So glad you slept well! Thank you so much for taking the time to write this lovely review and we look forward to having you back!

My husband and I spent our anniversary weekend at the Hobbit House and had an amazing time! Ed and Nancy made sure every detail was taken care of. As soon as we walked in we knew we would not want to leave. We enjoyed a short hike to Blue Sky and some much needed relaxing time. Being able to wake up and enjoy fresh eggs, fresh ground coffee and delicious pastries was great! We can't wait to go back!

Owner's Response: The path through the woods is always a favorite among guests. Sitting at Blue Sky Vineyard, having a bottle of wine, and sharing the secret that your cozy cabin and steaming hot tub is just beyond the woods, unseen by everyone, is such a treat. Blue Sky can put a cork in the bottle and you can carry it back to The Cove or you can finish it and take home another one. No worries about driving! Just sayin' :) Thank you so very much for spending your special anniversary with us and yes, do come back!

Awesome Get Away

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I spent a long weekend at the Hobbit House and loved every minute of it! What an amazing place to stay! Every detail was completely thought out to make this a memorable and unique experience. All of the little touches of decor and the fresh eggs and pastries, left by our wonderful hosts, just made this an awesome get away. We loved being able to walk to Blue Sky on the private little path right next to the cabin and come back to enjoy some wine and the hot tub. It rained a lot the weekend we were there, but so loved the cozy little Hobbit House it didn't matter. We snuggled up and watched The Hobbit movies on DVD! I really recommend this to anyone looking for a little something different and we would definitely return again!!

Owner's Response: We call it the stress free zone. The tension builders of life just melt away when entering the door of The Cove. Another agreed upon sentiment of most of our guests is that no matter what the weather, it made not a difference because The Cove is quite cozy, has most everything one might need, and the view makes offers the feeling that you are indeed the only people in the world - except when a horse rider might come across the prairie, but that only adds to the charm :) The depth of the night time sky also sometimes shocks guests. Without light pollution from town it can be quite spectacular!! Thank you for the lovely review and we look forward to your return to the Shire!

Wonderful escape

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I spent our anniversary in the Hobbit House and we were not disappointed. The location is great and the cabin itself is so neat. Ed and Nancy were wonderful hosts. All the details put into this property are amazing. We enjoyed the stroll to Blue Sky and the sangria was the best we have ever had. We ended up getting very lucky for February and had a wonderful day on Saturday. We took the zipline tour and definitely recommend it as well. We also got to do some hiking and seen a couple great waterfalls. I absolutely cannot wait to come back!

Owner's Response: The weather certainly did turn out to be spectacular for February. Frozen waterfalls and decent weather - not bad. The Canopy Zipline, is always a big hit for everyone. And the Blue Sky son always get that when he is in town or I use the Blue Sky Seyval to make my own at home. Thank you for spending your special weekend anniversary at the Cove and we look forward to having you both back again.

Great break from the ordinary

  • 5 of 5

This was our first time staying at the Rocky Comfort Cabins. We had the best time there. Showed up right after a snow fall and the place was magical. The on line pictures were very accurate but did not convey the "warm, at home' feeling we both got stepping in the very cool round front door of the Hobbit Cove.

Our second night there the clouds cleared and the sight of the milky way from the hot tub will forever be etched in our memories.

We stayed close on this trip and did all our own cooking in the wonderful kitchen. Next time we will try one of the many wineries or other interesting looking places close by.

Thank you Nancy and Ed for creating a perfect place for us to get away. We will be back

Owner's Response: The ambiance of the Hobbit Cove does tend to pull you in and envelope you in its cozy charm. It is easy to decide to just turn off the rest of the world and not leave the cabin. Starry hot tub nights are spectacular too! Thank you for making Rocky Comfort Cabins the place for your romantic escape :)
