About the property

1 Bdrm Loaded Apt on Lagoon: Pretty, Peaceful, Pool Rights 5 minutes from Town

Heron's Rest is a small, well-appointed apartment inside a walled, owner-occupied residence 1 1/2 miles north of San Pedro center. Some of the most beautiful views of la Isla Bonita can be seen from this lovely coastal location. And best of all, you are the only guest!

Heron's Rest was built by the owner to showcase the lagoon shallows and trade wind breezes. Our flower gardens and mangrove borders support endless birdwatching and birdsong - hummingbirds, herons and egrets oh my. Fireflies in the private woodlands follow spectacular lagoon sunsets.

Your accommodations offer every comfort and convenience, with a Pillow-top Queen bed in the bedroom and a Double Sofa-bed in the living room. The galley kitchen is fully equipped with refrigerator, 2 burner stove, microwave, coffeemaker, blender, toaster, china, cutlery, pots and pans and essential staples. There is a flatscreen TV in the living area, the dining table serves 4, and garden patio is lovingly landscaped with local fruits, flowers and vegetables. The property is fenced, with secure parking for rental vehicles.

Imported luxuries (400-count linens and towels, technology and appliances) are combined with beautiful local hardwoods, textiles and crafts. Everything you could want for total relaxation is assembled for you: books, maps and guides, A/C, games, beach towels, hammocks, bicycles and kayaks ... if I've forgotten anything just ask.

There are a dozen bars and restaurants within walking distance ranging from BBQ to fine dining; our guests can enjoy sunning, swimming and snorkeling at the Ak'bol Yoga Eco-Resort pool, beach and pier across the street, which also has daily yoga classes and some of the best local food on the island. Sailboat and paddle-board rentals are steps away and pick-ups for fishing, diving, and adventure trips, as well as the coastal ferry to town are across the street. Owner offers customized massage, reiki and private yoga classes onsite.

This vacation home is best suited for a couple or two friends but can accommodate 3 with permission, for short stays. Well mannered dogs are welcome with written permission. I look forward to introducing you to the many joys and activities of Ambergris Caye, and to arranging sports, cultural and leisure activities suited to your particular taste.

About Diana Snyder

I first fell in love with Belize as a visiting anthropology student over 30 years ago. I was drawn back again and again by the perfect combination of sun, sand and sea; by the positive Mayan energy; and by the friendliness and laidback lifestyle of the residents. Ambergris Caye became my permanent home in 2010.

Diana Snyder purchased this apartment in 2013

Why Diana Snyder chose San Pedro

Building a home that suited the Belizean weather and lifestyle, and celebrated the local materials and plants has been a dream come true. The private rental apartment on the first floor also serves as guest quarters for my family and friends, and it is personally maintained.

What makes this apartment unique

As onsite hostess I am almost always available for any questions - grocery stores, gas, where to eat, which tour to take, etc. And as a lifelong sailor and diver I am happy to share what I've learned so far, of the magical spots and amazing opportunities among the islands, in the water and on the mainland.

Nice clean rental, great location!

  • 5 of 5

We had a great vacation at Diana’s place. She arranged our golf cart rental, met us at the airport and escorted us back to the Heron’s Rest. Accommodations were just as described and had everything we needed. Although we went to town almost every day, it is in a perfect location with plenty to do on the North side of the bridge. Ak’bol is right across the street with excellent food, several great spots within walking distance for food, drinks and recreation. Diana was a perfect host - highly recommend her place!

Nice Confy Place!

  • 4 of 5

We really enjoyed just under two weeks at Heron's Rest with all the basics in place. Diana is a gracious hostess making sure our needs were met and even booked local snorkeling trips. It is about 1.5 miles from San Pedro and use of Akbol across the street is a very nice PLUS! Loved seeing fishing snorkeling right there and healthy choices to eat there. Not fancy but confy and clean with a decent kitchen, frig and micro and coffee pot. Wifi was on but is spotty in the apartment. TV OK but barely used it. Very nice.

Owner's Response: So glad you enjoyed your stay, and even extended it a few days. I found out the internet was spotty in our entire neighborhood that week as they were installing more streetlights alongside the communications wires. They now run even further north from Grand Caribe, a good thing for local evening dining. For future guests’ info there is also a two burner electric stove. Hope you make it back for more fishing and that elusive trifecta! Happy travels, Diana

Perfect Spot

  • 5 of 5

Heron's rest worked perfectly for our Belize vacation. Diana was prompt and helpful. The area is close enough to town to get in but far enough away to enjoy the peace and quiet of Ambergris. The apartment was clean and comfortable. The property overall felt very safe. There are plenty of eating and drinking options within walking distance, though our favorite way to get around was hitch hiking with whoever had room on their golf cart. So fun! Would not hesitate to book Heron's Rest again when visiting Belize.

Perfect for a week of R&R !!

  • 5 of 5

We had such a great week at Heron's Rest! Diana is a just a lovely lady and a wonderful host! She picked us up at the airport and gave us a quick review of San Pedro....even stopping at a store for us to pick up a few provisions! The suite was spacious and clean.....bed and linens were great....and the hammocks were a joy! The location was perfect for us. We walked to town each day along the beach (about a 45 min walk) and appreciated coming home each night to a quiet, peaceful setting. We loved access to Ak'Bol across the street and ate many wonderful meals there! Highly recommend Heron's Rest for a tropical get-away!

Great Property, Helpful and Hospitable Host

  • 5 of 5

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Heron's Rest. Diana was a wonderful host, striking a perfect balance of solicitous but not intrusive. The property was exactly as described with one exception: a developer has bought the area behind the house and is filling in some of the lagoon to place standalone resort condos in the space between Heron's Rest and the water. It wouldn't keep us from staying there again, but I think it's worth mentioning. We didn't see a convenient way down to the lagoon, so we limited our kayaking excursions to the sea side of the island, and that was exceptional--you just had to be careful of speedboats when crossing the channel. A reciprocity agreement with Ak'bol Yoga Resort across the street provides lots of options for food, entertainment, transportation, and sunrise and wildlife watching. The property is close enough to town to make provisions and entertainment readily accessible, but far enough away to cut down on noise and traffic. Diana was gracious and helpful, picking us up at the airport and arranging our tours and rentals. I recommend letting her do this for you. She listens well and asks questions to understand what your preferences are, and she has all the local contacts to meet your needs. She receives a commission but there's no pass-through fee, so your price is the same as if you arranged it yourself.

A couple of notes: the kitchen has most of what you need, but be aware that if you like to cook for yourself, you'll be somewhat limited in capacity. You have a portable two-burner electric stovetop, microwave, and a good but not full-sized refrigerator.

A golf cart is a good idea. We tried bikes for one day, but found traffic in San Pedro was a little intense for us, especially given that most of the bikes available are beach cruiser types, with pedal brakes. Gas is expensive compared to the States, but the burn rate on the carts is low.

The far north part of the island is a long and bumpy ride, but well worth it. We took our cart almost all the way to the Bacalar Chico ranger station and were rewarded with pristine beaches, wildlife, do-it-yourself snorkeling right from the beach, and on the last day, we blundered upon a bonefish conservation project the scientists let us help with.

Trips to Lamanai and Aktun Tunichil Muknal are phenomenal. Long days and fairly expensive, but worth it.

Overall, this was a wonderful spot for a relaxing and fun vacation, and it has my strongest possible recommendation!

Owner's Response: Thank you Kristy for such a thoughtful review. It was a pleasure having you both; I was impressed with how much you were able to do in one week! For future renters, I'd like to clarify that the view and access to the beautiful lagoon from Heron's Rest has not changed from the pictures presented, and is not expected to any time soon. A strip of marshland was purchased about 3 years ago by a local group who are involved in long term construction of a much larger project on the reef side. This being Belize, many people buy land that is not developed for years or decades. If and when it is developed, this strip is zoned for individual homes with a maximum of two storeys, not a resort condo. Please be assured that I will post any changes to our little piece of paradise here on vrbo.

Car: not necessary

This home was built on the narrowest part of the island, where lagoon and beach are only meters apart. Prevailing winds keep us comfortable and bug-free most of the time. The surrounding jungle, shining lagoon, crashing surf on the reef and endless beach offer peace and space in all directions while town is just a 5 minute ferry ride, 15 minute bike ride or 30 minute stroll down the beach.
