Experience the best the Big Island has to offer at Blake’s Beach House at Wai ‘Opae! This stunning beachfront home provides a welcome respite from the hustle and bustle of everyday life.
Please note that a short section of the access road to our house is rough and as such we recommend use of a Jeep or similar SUV.
Located within the Wai ‘Opae Marine Life Conservation District, Blake’s Beach House is home to some of the best snorkeling in the world! The large tide pools are protected by an outer reef; providing a safe environment for families, residents, tourists and those with modest swimming abilities to enjoy. While exploring the incredible coral gardens, diverse marine life, and thriving fish populations, you may even come across a turtle or two!
Blake’s Beach House was recently renovated with an upgraded kitchen and tasteful heirloom furnishings that will remind you of the best Hawai‘i has to offer. The master suite comes fully furnished with a king-size bed, luxury bed linens and towels, and a private bathroom. The second bedroom is furnished with two twin beds that are easily combined to form a second king-size bed. Both bathrooms are equipped with luxurious granite vanities, full tubs, and showers. The main bathroom also includes direct access from the deck, the ultimate convenience after a long day of swimming and snorkeling.
The Gourmet kitchen is appointed with high quality stainless appliances and offers full ocean views from the 12-foot island/bar. Whether you’re standing at the cook top, sink, dishwasher or seated on the bar stools – you won’t miss any of the action. You’ll also enjoy serene sunrises and unobstructed ocean views from the wrap-around deck; the ideal place to sit with coffee and good book at breakfast or lounge with a cocktail at sunset.
When you’re ready to venture out, black sand beaches, waterfalls, nature hikes, and scenic rain forests are all a short drive away. One mile to the South, you can swim in the volcanically heated ponds of Ahalanui. Farther down the road, you can surf or boogey board at Isaac Hale (or Pohoiki) Beach Park. Eclectic Pahoa Village, about 15 minutes away, has grocery and health food stores, restaurants and gas stations. Uncle Robert's Awa Bar and Farmer’s Market, located about 20 minutes South in Kaimu, is always a source of interest, frequented by local musicians.
Blake’s is conveniently located 50 minutes from one of the Big Island’s major attractions—the Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, with hiking, restaurants, museums, and more. While Hilo, the second largest city on the island is just 40 minutes away.
Local Attractions: Hot Ponds at Ahalanui (5 minutes), Isaac Hale (Pohoiki) Beach Park (10 minutes), Pahoa Village (15 minutes), Farmer’s Market and Black Sand Beach in Kaimu (20 minutes), Hilo Town (40 minutes), Hawaii Volcanoes National Park (50 minutes).

Kirk Pu'uohau-Pummill purchased this house in 1983
The perfect house for people who love the ocean. Spectacular floor to ceiling windows in the living area allow endless ocean watching, and only steps away to enter the watery world full of coral and fish. The house had everything we needed to be comfortable, was clean and well-cared for. Highly recommended.
Our family of 5 stayed here for three nights on the week leading up to Christmas. It was a very nice place with incredible views, great snorkeling, and very comfortable accommodations. Everything was clean and of good quality. The deck was a great place to hang out and the kitchen had everything we needed. Although there was no A/C or heat, the seven sliding glass doors with screens easily handled moderating the temperature at this time of year. Surprisingly the house was not overly humid given the need to keep the windows open. A lot to do in the area including lava tours (we took the boat and that was a great call), warm ponds, a local weekly night market with music (called Uncle Robert's), and star-filled skies.
The only thing we felt a little misled by was the mention that it "sleeps 6." Beyond four in beds any others need to either sleep on an uncomfortable couch or on a fold up foam mattress that we had to find in the closet. Our fifth person ended up on this mattress on the middle of the living room floor which was not comfortable or convenient for those who woke up earlier. I'm not even sure where the sixth person would sleep.
Also, as mentioned in their listing, a car was unable to get to the house as the road has been washed out. Unfortunately, we were not able to rent an SUV or jeep and were stuck parking our rental car about a half mile away which was a real pain every time we had to travel. However, this was mentioned on more than one occasion and is in the listing so that issue was on us. However, I just wanted others to know that, in fact, no car can get to within about 4 houses (100 yards) of the rental without a serious 4-wheel drive vehicle.
All-in-all it was a great place that we would stay at again.
The view from this property is totally captivating. Absolutely superb snorkeling is a 2 or 3 minute walk away. The variety of fish is amazing!!!! You can snorkel in almost any weather because of a protective reef so when the Kona/Kohala coast is impossible, likely the snorkeling will still be easy other than a lava entry, which is normal for Hawaii. We have now rented this house twice and will be back again in March. The house is very attractively furnished and the rooms are large and airy. The kitchen is very well equipped and the view from the cook's point of view is superb. Kirk is great to work with. He is right about the driveway - You must have at least an all wheel drive. Be aware that Thrify and Dollar (both Hertz subsidiaries) are advertising mid-size SUV's and actually providing compact SUVs which may not have adequate ground clearance. The problem area is short but challenging.
This home was above and beyond!! Working with Kirk was so easy, and his kindness and preparation for our arrival was wonderful. There were amenities beyond our expectations. I can't say enough how much we enjoyed our stay. Waking up each day and walking into the ocean a few feet from the front door was a dream. This truly felt like a vacation!!!
Our family of 4 (2 Adults and 2 teenage boys) enjoyed our stay here. The house is well stocked in the kitchen and plenty of towels and linens. Beds are comfortable, nice TV's, good internet, exceptional location. Please be sure to rent a Jeep or high clearance vehicle - you will need it to get to the house, and you will want it for exploring other places on the island (like green sand beach!!) Booking was easy and owner very responsive. My only complaint was there are no window coverings - great for view, not so great for privacy in the bedrooms. You really don't look out on any neighbors and I did not see any people from the windows in the bedroom so I am hoping they did not see in either. :)
My family had an incredible time. It was a treat to be across the street from the Wai 'Opae Tide Pools. We enjoyed being in a very quiet part of the Big Island and truly felt we didn't have to go anywhere. The tide pools offered tons of areas for exploration and we even saw a sea turtle every day. We would definitely go back!
The tide pools right in front of our home are a protected marine sanctuary, and the official name of this area is Wai’opae Tidepools Marine Life Conservation District.
