Located within the Wai ‘Opae Marine Life Conservation District, Blake’s Beach House is home to some of the best snorkeling in the world! The large tide pools are protected by an outer reef; providing a safe environment for families, residents, tourists and those with modest swimming abilities to enjoy. While exploring the incredible coral gardens, diverse marine life, and thriving fish populations, you may even come across a turtle or two!

Blake’s Beach House was recently renovated with an upgraded kitchen and tasteful heirloom furnishings that will remind you of the best Hawai‘i has to offer. The master suite comes fully furnished with a king-size bed, luxury bed linens and towels, and a private bathroom. The second bedroom is furnished with two twin beds that are easily combined to form a second king-size bed. Both bathrooms are equipped with luxurious granite vanities, full tubs, and showers. The main bathroom also includes direct access from the deck, the ultimate convenience after a long day of swimming and snorkeling.

The Gourmet kitchen is appointed with high quality stainless appliances and offers full ocean views from the 12-foot island/bar. Whether you’re standing at the cook top, sink, dishwasher or seated on the bar stools – you won’t miss any of the action. You’ll also enjoy serene sunrises and unobstructed ocean views from the wrap-around deck; the ideal place to sit with coffee and good book at breakfast or lounge with a cocktail at sunset.

When you’re ready to venture out, black sand beaches, waterfalls, nature hikes, and scenic rain forests are all a short drive away. One mile to the South, you can swim in the volcanically heated ponds of Ahalanui. Farther down the road, you can surf or boogey board at Isaac Hale (or Pohoiki) Beach Park. Eclectic Pahoa Village, about 15 minutes away, has grocery and health food stores, restaurants and gas stations. Uncle Robert's Awa Bar and Farmer’s Market, located about 20 minutes South in Kaimu, is always a source of interest, frequented by local musicians.

Blake’s is conveniently located 50 minutes from one of the Big Island’s major attractions—the Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, with hiking, restaurants, museums, and more. While Hilo, the second largest city on the island is just 40 minutes away.

Local Attractions: Hot Ponds at Ahalanui (5 minutes), Isaac Hale (Pohoiki) Beach Park (10 minutes), Pahoa Village (15 minutes), Farmer’s Market and Black Sand Beach in Kaimu (20 minutes), Hilo Town (40 minutes), Hawaii Volcanoes National Park (50 minutes).

Beautiful Home, Incredible Tide Pool Access

  • 5 of 5

Comfortable, artistic, and tasteful was how we found ourselves describing this incredible property. Both bedrooms are roomy and nicely furnished, and the two bathrooms made getting ready easy for everyone. The hallmark feature is the open kitchen / dining / living area that with large windows opens directly to generous deck space. The owner, Kirk, is clearly committed to both the ecology of the area and the enjoyment of his guests, offering education about the house and the Tide Pool area (great books on fish species and coral) and ensuring supplies are high quality and considerate (like the fluffy beach towels and refrigerated aloe!). Kirk also balances accessibility and privacy perfectly, with quick response to any questions via email / phone. While only a minor issue, my cell service (verizon) wasn't strong in the immediate area, so I would offer this just as awareness for other travelers (there is a landline in the house). Tide Pool access is literally across the one lane road in front of the house or through a public access point down the street (3 minute walk). Day trips for us included Volcano National Park, Punaluu Black Sand Beach, lava viewing at End of Road (check out their facebook page for more info) and Hilo. Of course simply hanging out at the house was incredible too - catching a morning high tide snorkel and having your own, direct ocean view happy hour on the deck can't be beat. However you fill your days, you undoubtedly won't be disappointed staying at this property!

Fantastic!

  • 5 of 5

We had the pleasure to stay at the Blake house for a week and would have been happy to move in permanently. The location is stunning with unobstructed views of the the ocean and the Wai 'Opae tide pools only steps away. The house had everything we needed to stay comfortable, prepare meals, do laundry, check in with the office occasionally through a good internet connection, and most important of all, just relax. My favorite part of each day was falling asleep to the sounds of the ocean waves and waking up to the same each morning. The tide pools were absolutely perfect for our kids to snorkel for the first time in the calm waters protected from the ocean surf. We weren't lucky enough this trip to see any turtles, but we did get to see several eels along with many different fish species and corral.

Definitely plan to rent a high clearance vehicle if you plan to stay here. There is a very short but steep driveway into the property from the road. When the tide is high and covering the road nearby, you'll understand why the driveway was built this way.

The Puna coastline is the perfect place to relax and explore the quiet part of the island and enjoy the slower pace around Pahoa. We would stay here again in a heart beat!

Amazing place and tidepools

  • 5 of 5

From the living plant bouquet to the orchids in the bathroom to the views on the deck, this was a wonderful place and an amazing location. Snorkeling in the tidepools every day was a highlight and our best experience on the island. Going to Uncle Roberts was an experience of Hawaiian music and impromptu dancing. We bought fish from markets in Pahoa and Hilo and grilled them on the propane grill which worked really well. We loved our stay here and hope to return someday.

Nothing but delightful

  • 5 of 5

One of the best located houses on the tidepools with wide ocean views and access to the water almost directly out the door. The house was beautifully and tastefully decorated, also very clean and uncluttered. Kirk was great to rent from and made extending our stay by an extra 3 nights easy and pain-free in the extreme. This is the beach house you imagine when you dream of staying at a coastal destination such as this. We loved this place, and truth-be-told, I ended up choosing this house out of two others in the area because it was my favorite color of blue. The floors are an beautiful dimensional tile that is never cold and such a pleasure to walk on, (also very clean).

You should expect lots of natural light all day and direct sunshine in the mornings in the living room/kitchen so if you like the dim environs of cave-living, get some sunglasses (or stay in the bedroom until late morning)! Cooling is achieved by opening the patio doors and running fans which was sufficient even though we use air conditioning at home, but we usually keep our temps around 73 or 74 deg F so acclimating wasn't too difficult, especially with the frequent breezes.

The kitchen was well supplied with dishes and cookware, with plenty of counter space for meal prep, a large fridge, a kickass dishwasher and stove, and garbage disposal. There were plenty of towels, beach towels, soap, linens, also a couple sets of masks, snorkel, and fins.

Things that could use attention might include more places to hang wet towels and clothes especially if there are multiple people staying, otherwise hang them on the railing which I don't like to do because of the birds that play around the decks and leave droppings. Speaking of birds, two pretty little yellow birds committed suicide at different times during our stay and found them on the deck. I think they flew into the glass. This was disturbing for our toddler. Maybe some well placed stickers or hanging objects on the glass in a few spots? The master bathroom vanity cabinet has a strong musty smell maybe from water damage. Mold tends to aggravate my allergies so just didn't use that bathroom much. The patio doors don't open and close smoothly but it's not really a big deal. None of this was a big enough deal to not give 5 stars, however.

BEAUTIFUL HOUSE - BEAUTIFUL VIEW - EASY ACCESS TO THE TIDE POOLS

  • 5 of 5

This was our 3rd stay here and our 8th stay in this little subdivision. We fly from New Hampshire to Kona and drive here as often as we can. We have visited the other islands and spent time elsewhere on the Big Island too. But, we like it best here. Kirk is fabulous to work with and very kind. This time he found that we had forgotten a camera lens and it is on its way back to us now. The house is lovely with outstanding views across tide pools to the ocean which can be lapping at the road out front, at high tide. The difficult road in front of the house has now been replaced with a cement road which feels a little bit like a ocean front promenade. Everyone is enjoying it and access to the house has become much easier and should be real easy soon when the house driveway can be tied into it. (We were there just after the concrete road had been put in.) The tide pools continue to be teaming with colorful fish. We were fortunate to also get a chance to see lava fountains from the Jagger Museum outlook (Volcano National Park.)
