About the property

1 bedroom, 1 bath room with stone fireplace & modern kitchen

The Hobbit House was created to provide everything you need for the perfect stay in the spectacular mountains of western North Carolina. Privacy yet close to everything? Check. Spa bathroom? Check. The most comfortable bed this side of the Mississippi? Check. Sophisticated yet relaxed? Check.

Welcome to your cozy mountain hide-away. Just a two minute drive or an easy walk to the Cashiers crossroads, the Hobbit House is nestled within an acre of mountain laurel, holly and tall pines....a Cashiers cabin with in-town seclusion, for you and yours to enjoy.

The Hobbit House has been completely redone with new stainless kitchen appliances and new bathroom...and redecorated into a luxurious, warm and peaceful retreat for two - or three, if you have a dog. Get away from everything - yet have all the luxuries of home: DirecTV, HD web-services (Netflix, Amazon Instant Video, Roku etc.), brand new washer and dryer, phone and Wi-Fi. A new, petite but modern kitchen and flagstone floored bath with a fabulous new subway-tiled walk-in shower...both on the first floor.. are just off the open living area with a wood burning, stone fireplace.

On cooler days, there is warm air flowing at the flick of a switch plus the fireplace, and an upstairs super efficient standing floor air conditioning unit that keeps the cottage cool on the rare, warmer than normal day. Usually the stainless steel ceiling fans do the trick!

Follow the mountain laurel railing upstairs to the light filled loft bedroom, where a wonderful night's sleep awaits under the rafters. The gel-topped, memory foam, king size bed will soothe you to sleep in the cool mountain air after a day of hiking, waterfalls or shopping.

The Hobbit House is a cabin with a difference. The dark furniture, granny bedspreads, and someone else’s knick-knacks and odd pieces went somewhere else. Everything in The Hobbit House has been chosen specifically for this cottage. While poplar bark siding protects the exterior, inside you’ll find a light, modern, designer-mountain feel with a whitewashed shiplap interior, artisan details, the latest energy-efficient appliances and cool art. For your skin, there are also new, top quality Matteo linen sheets and fluffy won't find another place like it. except our big sister house. You'll find a link below to the Mountain House if you're looking for something larger (6B-4-1/2B) but with the same easy style.

In the morning, have your coffee on the Sunday porch swing next to the mountain laurel rails that line the deck. Listen to the silence of the rain forest, broken only by the Carolina birds singing their tunes. Promise yourself that today, you WILL make time for reading. Ok, and maybe a nap on that same plush swing-bed. Later, enjoy a glass of wine in the same spot or take it with you walking the secluded roads and trails just outside your door. Then, if you wish, cook dinner in the fully-equipped kitchen. Even better, slip away to one of Cashier's many wonderful restaurants that are just minutes away. Welcome to a slice of heaven!

About Donna Hamilton Paulson

I first traveled to the Highlands/Cashiers Plateau as host of 'Great Country Inns' for The Learning Channel, and after traveling all over the world for work...this was the place that stopped me in my tracks. The weather in the summer is so incredible for those of us used to scorching 90+ temps...balmy 75 degree days, but so cool at night you can light a fire. Also lovely in the fall and spring....cozy in the was where we always wanted to own a home. Now we do and love sharing it with guests. We hope you plan a visit to enjoy the beauty of the Blue Ridge Mountains. Warning: you may never want to leave!

Why Donna Hamilton Paulson chose Smoky Mountains

Who doesn't love the idea of a cozy little bark covered cottage in the woods? This hideaway is just perfect for two people, snuggled into the mountain laurel, with walking trails right outside the door, plus restaurants, shopping and everything you need just 2 minutes away. The modern convenience is amazing, the rustic charm undeniable.

What makes this cabin unique

You're super close to Cashiers...seriously, the two of you could walk there. Yet you're in the middle of a beautiful green forest of old rhododendrons and pine, right outside your door. You can hike, bike, shop, golf, eat out, fly fish...or just relax. It's all just minutes away.

This cabin nesseled and tucked away in the woods is anyone's dream. The owners could not have been more accommodating and our only complaint is that we have to leave!!!

Cozy Cottage

  • 5 of 5

My husband just spent five days including Thanksgiving in the Hobbit House. It is new and beautifully decorated from top to bottom. The king size bed was really comfortable and the fireplace in the main room was just what we wanted. It was pretty chilly and we burned a fire every day while we were there. They also allowed us to bring our two small dogs which was important to us. The location of the house could not be better, just minutes away from the center of Cashiers. The owners answered all of our questions and were very nice, the house was as advertised and was very clean. Parking was right at the door. I would highly recommend this house for one or two people. The only drawback would be that the bedroom is upstairs and the bathroom is downstairs.

What a lovely experience. I have stayed in dozens of cabins in the Smoky Mountains over the years and this is by far my favorite. There are thoughtful details everywhere you look - from the perfectly placed dish by the door for your keys to the welcoming bottle of wine. It is cozy and beautiful and has everything you could need right at your fingertips. Now, if you are looking for a cabin to house 22 people and be in the middle of amusement parks and outlet malls, this is not the place for you. If you are looking for sweeping mountaintop views, you won't find that here. But, if your idea of a vacation is a fireplace, a wonderful porch swing, and feeling as though you are sleeping in a tree house, you won't be disappointed with Hobbit House. It was the perfect romantic getaway for my husband and me.There are fantastic restaurants nearby, antique stores within a short drive and amazing views along the curvy mountain roads. The bed and linens are among the best I have slept in outside of my own home. The only negative we noted was that if you want to visit outside the immediate area (such as the Biltmore Estate or the National Park), it can be a taxing drive just because the roads are so curvy. Just something to be aware of but no reflection on the cabin at all. There is plenty of laid back activity in Cashiers and Highlands. To top it all off, working with Donna could not be easier. She is very responsive and accommodating. You can tell she loves the area and wants to share the best of it with her visitors. I will be recommend Hobbit House to my friends without hesitation. Thank you, Donna, for helping us to have a perfect, much needed vacation.

This is the perfect little cabin for you and your loved one for a weekend getaway or longer. The cabin is so cozy and has everything you need. The fireplace was wonderful to have on the chilly nights and the mattress is amazing!! Donna was very responsive and extremely easy to communicate with. This was our second trip to the Hobbit House and we will definitely be back!

Fabulous cottage!

  • 5 of 5

Just returned home after 3 short nights at 'The Hobbit House'. Could not have asked for more--great secluded location, yet close to town. The cottage itself was even better than described--had everything we needed (& more), great info & tips from Donna (the spa and golf course were close--thoroughly enjoyed both!). Best night's sleep in ages to boot. Donna even arranged for perfect weather. Kudos to the housekeeping staff, too. 'The Hobbit House' is a keeper.

Another great stay at Hobbit House!

  • 5 of 5

When we last visited Cashiers it was July a year ago. This year we decided to try September to see what the weather is like and do more exploring of the area. It was great to know that the Hobbit House would be our home away from home again and that all of our lodging and relaxation needs would be taken care of. We booked on VRBO easily and Donna contacted us right away to confirm. It's one thing to take a chance on a new place when vacationing. It's entirely another to KNOW how wonderful a place is prior to going - like a giant gift waiting to be opened when you arrive. Our second foray into the magical woods did not disappoint. Everything was just as we'd remembered, porch swing and all. The weather was amazing in September. We spent more time outside than in, but the bed was super cozy, the bathrobes lush and we had everything we needed for a 4 day getaway. If you haven't tried this special place, you should. It's a breath of cool mountain air in an otherwise busy life and it is so worth visiting.
