About Randy Simpson

Randy and Alison moved to the Big Island from Ontario, Canada in 2013. After visiting for the first time in 2008, we fell in love with the Hamakua Coast. We were able to sell our hotel and restaurant businesses in our hometown of Stratford and make the dream of Mahana House a reality.

Randy and Alison live in a small house slightly uphill from the main house. A few friendly cats roam the farm. They are happy to be petted should you encounter them (perhaps on your lanai…) but are definitely not allowed inside the main house or guest rooms.

Highly recommend this venue

  • 5 of 5

We liked being away from the hotels and touristy places to stay. This is on a farm on the Hilo side of the island. Great view of the ocean from the patio. Very clean and near Hilo. Not a bad drive to the other side of the island. Quiet, aside from the frogs and nature sounds especially at night, which we enjoyed. Would highly recommend to anyone interested in getting away from the hotels.

“An absolute must! Convenient, comfortable, clean and everything you need! You won't want to leave!"

  • 5 of 5

This is one of the best VRBO places I have stayed at. The beds are beyond amazing! The rooms are warm and inviting (and very clean!) and offer everything you need! The great room is perfect for cooking breakfast, lunch or dinner and then enjoy your mean on the terrace while enjoying the view and surrounding nature. You'll feel completely at home! Initially when booking, I was slightly worried about not having our own private kitchen, however, this was not a problem at all and was actually better! The kitchen is huge and Ali and Randy supply everything! No need to go hunting down those annoying items like butter, salt, cooking oil, coffee, sugar...well they have it! The stove is even like one of those professional cooking stoves. Its fancy!

Ali and Randy even provide beach chairs, beach towels and ice packs for a day out! They are amazing hosts who truly love providing a wonderful place for their guests. They were available at any time of day to help answer any questions we had as we planned our day trips. And they always made sure we had what we needed.

I couldn't say better things about Mahana House and if we ever visit the Big Island again, this will be the first place we book. Even though we were on vacation, it felt like home and a place where we were so comfortable, we didn't want to leave!

Manhana House Rocks!

  • 5 of 5

Randy and Alison were the perfect hosts. They clearly know how to make someone feel comfortable, welcome and acclimated to the area. The suites alone were supplied with everything you need, but in addition you had access to a full kitchen, enormous family area, laundry facilities, fruit trees and lanai with torch tiki lights and barbecue. And let us not forget the amazing ocean view!! There were coolers provided with ice packs so you could make yourself a nice picnic. Akaka falls is about 5 minutes away. Hilo is about 25 minutes south. Convenient, comfortable, friendly atmosphere. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at the Mahana House Country Inn.

Wonderful Hospitality at Mahana House

  • 5 of 5

We really enjoyed our four night stay at Mahana House earlier this month (May 2016). The setting was so peaceful and lush, and we really enjoyed the location for seeing the north and east sides of the Big Island. Alison and Randy have amazing hospitality...they really have thought of so many little things to stock in the rooms and kitchen that came in handy throughout our trip. The refrigerator had left over condiments and beverages which were much appreciated, and there were enough spices and other items leftover from prior guests in the cupboards to supplement our grocery shopping to make some good meals. And they had plenty of ground coffee which was fantastic. The beds were very comfortable (I'd never slept on a Sleep Number bed and it was quite nice!), linens were great, our room and common areas were clean and tidy, the landscaping and views were gorgeous. The location is really nice too, fairly convenient to Hilo but a bit of a trek to Waimea. Highway 19 is scenic so the time passes quickly staring out the window and a stop at Tex Drive-In for malasadas was a nice pit stop. Randy and Alison gave us good restaurant and activity recommendations and we even went to the silent movie night with the Wurlitzer organ playing at the Palace Theater in Hilo which was a lot of fun. We even got to catch up with them over a campfire until we got rained out. Also, the cats are funny; Mo was quite the welcoming committee our first night but he quickly lost interest in us. Overall, I absolutely recommend staying at Mahana House if you want a more off the beaten path experience in Hawaii from the typical mega resorts on the west side. We had rented a house through Air BnB south of Pahoa for the first part of our trip and I wish we had stayed at Mahana House the whole time instead. It was a lovely, quiet and laid back stay, just what we had in mind. Thank you to Alison and Randy for being fantastic hosts!

Favourite place on Big island

  • 5 of 5

This was our third visit to Mahana House and each year it is lusher and greener thanks to the tireless efforts of Alison and Randy, our delightful hosts. They are continuously adding more trees, shrubs and flowers around the main house, for the enjoyment of their guests. Beautiful bamboo screens between each suite for extra privacy too. Our room, which had the feel of a small apartment (new this year) had a lovely large bathroom with walk in shower and full size amenities, which was was such a thoughtful touch. The king size bed is just right because you can regulate the level of firmness. One of the nicest features of our room was the wrap around lanai. Perfect for watching the sun come up with a mug of delicious Hawaiian coffee. The main kitchen had everything we needed to prepare meals, (banana muffins from the farm's own trees!) and the great room was perfect for relaxing with family and new friends. After a busy day sightseeing, hiking or swimming, it was so nice to return to the tranquility of the farm to enjoy the spectacular stars and the occasional campfire, complete with marshmallows. It is simply our favourite place to stay in the Hilo area.

We loved the Mahana House!

  • 5 of 5

We recently visited Big Island and stayed at the Mahana House. Wow! What a great place. It was so relaxing and quiet with beautiful views. We loved everything with the birds singing, fresh fruit from Randy and Alison's farm each day, ocean views, wonderful furnishings. We certainly felt pampered staying here. The location is also great and easy to find. We have stayed at many VRBO's and this was one of our favorites. Thank you Randy and Alison for your hospitality (even though we didn't see you much) and providing a wonderful place to stay. Mahalo!
