Our FOUR ROOM INN is situated on a peaceful FRUIT FARM on the East side of the Big Island of Hawaii. Mahana House is a quiet and relaxing place to soak up the expansive ocean views and is IDEALLY LOCATED to explore the many lush gardens and spectacular waterfalls nearby as well as Hilo town and HAWAII VOLCANOES NATIONAL PARK. There are bananas, avocados, lychee and passionfruit available for guests to enjoy in season.

Our large lanais are the perfect place to BBQ and enjoy dinner by tiki torch light in the evening or coffee with sunrise in the morning.

Some day trip ideas include exploring waterfalls and gardens nearby, Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, and MAUNA KEA summit and stargazing. There is virtually no limit to the activities and adventures available to you on the Big Island. We have a 3 night minimum for guest reservations.

The OCEAN is a short drive down the road to a former sugar cane plantation, now Hakalau Park. HAWAII TROPICAL BOTANICAL GARDEN and AKAKA FALLS are within a few easy miles of the farm. After a day of sight seeing, return to the beautiful ocean view, warm breezes and peaceful atmosphere of our farm.

About Randy Simpson

Randy and Alison moved to the Big Island from Ontario, Canada in 2013. After visiting for the first time in 2008, we fell in love with the Hamakua Coast. We were able to sell our hotel and restaurant businesses in our hometown of Stratford and make the dream of Mahana House a reality.

Randy and Alison live in a small house slightly uphill from the main house. A few friendly cats roam the farm. They are happy to be petted should you encounter them (perhaps on your lanai…) but are definitely not allowed inside the main house or guest rooms.

Randy Simpson purchased this house in 2013

Why Randy Simpson chose Hilo District

What makes this house unique

Best Place to Stay In Hawaii

  • 5 of 5

Great view, great room, great location on the beautiful Hakalau Coast. Randy and Alison are terrific hosts and have done a great job covering all the bases for a comfortable stay. 10 Stars. I could go on and on about how happy we were with our stay at the Mahana House. and will definitely come back and refer to our friends. Go see for yourself.

Great hosts & lovely oasis at end of the day.

  • 5 of 5

Thanks to Randy & Alison for great hospitality! We would definitely stay here again when coming to Hilo side. It was such a lovely, quiet place up the mauka side over looking the ocean. We loved coming back to this oasis at the end of our days. Dinner bbq'd on the community lanai with the tiki torches burning was so nice.

Randy & Alison had great suggestions on where to travel, what to see and where to eat. AND they shared their great fruit.... lychee, bananas, & star apples! Thank you!

Tranquil Location

  • 4 of 5

We spent 5 days at Mahana House and thoroughly enjoyed our stay. The property was well maintained and very peaceful with birds and frogs singing to us each day. Our corner unit was lovely and spacious overlooking the property and ocean in the distance. The communal kitchen was well stocked with so many extras that Randy and Allison provided over and above what is expected in a rental condo. It is a great place to put your feet up and read some books or just enjoy the peace and quiet. A pool would make it a 5 star! Thanks Randy for making our stay relaxing. Susan & Graeme, Vancouver, BC

The perfect holiday escape.

  • 5 of 5

My wife and I booked the corner suite for 8 nights just after Christmas and in to the new year. Two other couples thought Mahana House looked like fun and joined us each booking their own rooms. We had a blast. We took advantage of the local farmers markets and cooked in every night. The kitchen is as well equipped as any I have seen in a holiday accommodation. The outdoor covered dinning room on the lanai was fantastic.

We were very comfortable in our corner suite. The sleep number king size bed was very comfortable. It provided a perfect view of the sun rising out of the Pacific. The bath was very clean and well appointed. All the comforts you would expect from a first rate accommodation.

The big island is our favorite Hawaiian island and the wet windy side is our favorite side. Lush, green and tropical. Mahana House is perfect for a big island adventure and the owner, Randy, is the consummate host and guide. Full of info and tips yet very respectful of ones privacy. His years in the hospitality industry have found a wonderful expression in his country Inn.

Sorry for being so long winded. We loved it and hope to return. Mahalo

Highly recommend this venue

  • 5 of 5

We liked being away from the hotels and touristy places to stay. This is on a farm on the Hilo side of the island. Great view of the ocean from the patio. Very clean and near Hilo. Not a bad drive to the other side of the island. Quiet, aside from the frogs and nature sounds especially at night, which we enjoyed. Would highly recommend to anyone interested in getting away from the hotels.

“An absolute must! Convenient, comfortable, clean and everything you need! You won't want to leave!"

  • 5 of 5

This is one of the best VRBO places I have stayed at. The beds are beyond amazing! The rooms are warm and inviting (and very clean!) and offer everything you need! The great room is perfect for cooking breakfast, lunch or dinner and then enjoy your mean on the terrace while enjoying the view and surrounding nature. You'll feel completely at home! Initially when booking, I was slightly worried about not having our own private kitchen, however, this was not a problem at all and was actually better! The kitchen is huge and Ali and Randy supply everything! No need to go hunting down those annoying items like butter, salt, cooking oil, coffee, sugar...well they have it! The stove is even like one of those professional cooking stoves. Its fancy!

Ali and Randy even provide beach chairs, beach towels and ice packs for a day out! They are amazing hosts who truly love providing a wonderful place for their guests. They were available at any time of day to help answer any questions we had as we planned our day trips. And they always made sure we had what we needed.

I couldn't say better things about Mahana House and if we ever visit the Big Island again, this will be the first place we book. Even though we were on vacation, it felt like home and a place where we were so comfortable, we didn't want to leave!
