About the property

3 bedroom, 2 bath mill with gorgeous views of the Armoncon River

Enjoy historic Burgundy: its castles, abbeys, the Burgundy Wine Route and its gastronomy; Take a day trip to Paris as it is just an hour train trip away.

The Moulin Vert is located below the granite ramparts and towers of the fairy tale like town Semur en Auxois, on the banks of the winding Armancon River. This former water mill from the 17th century has been lovingly restored by my husband, Jean Jacques and I. We have used art deco furnishings and light fixtures, family heirlooms, stain glass windows, oak beams, local stone and handmade tile and original art making the house full of character and charm.

Relax on the terrace or on the private island and soak up the gorgeous views of the river. The island, just a few steps across a bridge has many weeping willows and a waterfall; a perfect spot for reading. If you are a nature lover you will enjoy the daily visits from the mother duck and her ducklings and if you are up at daybreak you may see the large grey heron fishing in front of the mill. King fishers dart up and down the river and one year we had a water chicken (poule d’eau) build its nest right in front of our terrace. The luxuriant garden and island are nestled among many weeping willow trees and makes a lovely setting for a romantic river retreat.

Our home is in fact in town, just a ten minute walk from the historic town center. Walk to town along the river and buy your fresh bread and croissants from the local baker-(I eat half the warm baguette before I make it home!) Stroll along the medieval pedestrian streets and visit the Collegiale (a step down from being a Cathedral) restored by the famous architect, Violet le Duc. (who also restored Notre Dame in Paris). Sunday morning visit the market in town and taste the local produce. Our house makes a great home base for visiting the many sights of Burgundy…The Abbey of Fontenay, Dijon, Vezelay, Flavigny, Chablis, Epoisse, Cluny, Beaunne, the many wineries on the famous wine route and the many castles of Burgundy. You may also use it as base to visit Paris which is just an hour train trip (Train station is in Montbard).

About Jean Jacques or Mary Vanroyen

My husband and I live part-time in France in a small medieval village, Semur en Auxois and part time on a sailboat. We have spent the last four years sailing in the Mediterranean: around Croatia, Italy and the Greek islands. We also loved visiting Turkey: people are warm and the country is beautiful and full of history. We hiked the Lycian Way, a road and trail system that is 2,500 years old, linking Lycian cities that are now in ruins. One feels a mystical connection with all the thousands of people who have traveled these roads built so many centuries ago. It is one of the most stunning and varied paths in the world. This year we have been sailing along the coasts of Italy, Sicily and Malta.

I write and illustrate children’s books and my husband is retired but keeps busy working on his many building projects.

Why Jean Jacques or Mary Vanroyen chose Burgundy

Many years ago we took a vacation in Burgundy and fell in love with the region. We took many trips to Burgundy looking at towns and villages until we happened upon Semur. The town and surrounding area were magical; there were so many lovely areas for hiking and biking and Burgundy is so rich in history.

While walking along the river we saw our house for sale; it was such a poetic, romantic site that we were instantly charmed. We spent many years totally remodeling the house; going to flea markets in Paris and where ever we traveled finding just the right antique for our home. We fancied the art deco period and started to collect antiques from this era; so our house has an art deco theme. We welcome you to our home and hope you enjoy it and Burgundy as much as we do!

What makes this house unique

We were living in an apartment in Paris when we found our home; and the contrast of the gorgeous natural setting and friendly town with the busy city was very appealing. And we are still close enough to visit Paris and enjoy the museums and beauty of the city too. Whenever we walk up to town we meet maybe 10 friends on the way up and while having a coffee in town. We love the friendly atmosphere. Sometimes when I ramble along the river I just can’t believe the beauty of the town, it its truly unique.

Guestbook comments from the owner

We loved our stay at The Moulin Vert; in fact this is our third visit.

The house is full of character and the private island and garden are gorgeous! The river is a nature paradise-with ducks and many other birds, and just a 10 minute walk to the historic town and fresh bread! Every other day we took day trips to castles, wineries and medieval towns. This house is truly a gem!

Relax by the River

  • 5 of 5

We have stayed three times at Le Moulin Vert, and we're looking forward to returning again in the fall of 2015. The house is a wonder, very comfortable and well equipped even for a multi-week stay. The location on the Armancon River couldn’t be better. An al fresco lunch or dinner on the terrace, amidst the ducks (a particular favorite of our grandson) and the waterfall, is one of the great moments. With the extra bedrooms upstairs, the house easily accommodates visitors without being cramped, but is still just fine for two of us.

Semur en Auxois is, for us, just right. Big enough to accommodate most of our needs (groceries, wines, restaurants, boulangeries, etc.), but small enough to navigate easily and avoid the tourists. The location in the heart of Burgundy allows easy access to numerous sites and activities, and a TGV station fifteen minutes away in Montbard makes it easy for arriving family and friends direct from De Gaulle airport. Quick, easy access to Beaune and Dijon is another plus. We’ll keep coming back – again and again.

Paradise Found -- in France

  • 5 of 5

There really is only one negative about this house: once you visit, you will not want to leave!

Our first visit was in 2012, and before even leaving The Moulin Vert, we were dreaming of and planning for our next visit (which was in 2014). We are now anticipating another return in 2015. Mary & Jean-Jaques have worked very hard to make their home a beautiful and peaceful retreat for their guests. There are detailed reference materials and instructions available, as well as handy guidebooks and maps for the many day-trip options from this quaint, Central Burgundy town -- along with all of the amenities needed for travelers (washer/dryer, WiFi, Cable, well-equipped kitchen, etc., etc.). We have stayed in several houses in Europe, and this is our family's overall favorite -- and is now the home to many, many wonderful family memories (and more to come).

Thank you Jean-Jacques & Mary!!

Like staying in Monet's Garden!

  • 5 of 5

We stayed in this magical home for a month last summer. It was unbelievably beautiful and comfortable. The view from the living room, through the floor-to-ceiling glass door and windows, reminded me of one of Monet's paintings. Sitting on the back porch in the morning, having coffee and croissants after a quick walk to the medieval village boulangerie was like living in a dream! It was quiet, very private and peaceful, with every modern convenience. The split level bedrooms offered lots of privacy for two couples to stay very easily. The furnishings are charming. The owners are very responsive to every question or concern.

Car: recommended

Our home is a 10 minute drive to a lovely lake, Lac de Pont.

You may swim, boat or hike around the wooded lake. There is a wonderful restaurant at the lake called Hotel du Lac.

The mediaval town of Flavigny is a 15 minute drive. The movie Chocolate with Johnny Depp was filmed here. It is a gorgeous town perched on a hilltop. I love to go to Flavigny and eat at Le Grange; there are women from the area who make wonderful meals with tarts, quiches and many other dishes with local produce. It has a relaxed atmosphere.
