My name is Arthur and I grew up locally in Penn Yan. My wife, Brianne and I have a son and have settled down in the area, and actually, very close to the cottage. We are also owners of the Switzerland Inn which is the restaurant and bar right across the street. As lovers of Keuka Lake, we are partial to the view of the Switz and cottage, which is, breathtaking. Thanks for staying with us :)
Arthur Kirk purchased this cottage in 2008
This property is unique because it offers an atmosphere for a social crowd. We are in beautiful Keuka Village with a winery, Ravines, right across the road, and The Switzerland Inn bar and restaurant on the other side of the street. If you are looking for a cottage for a couples trip, girlfriends weekend or bachelorette party this is the place. It isn't easy always finding transportation in the area with no taxi's, and we are within walking distance! At the same time, our setting is calm, and relaxing. A great cottage to rent as wedding guests in the area! Don't forget there is a boat launch just 300 yards away!
As a young couple living at this house, we always enjoyed a glass of wine on the deck as the sun was setting, and entertaining guests down on the stone patio with a fire in the fire pit. Its a beautiful road to take walks, with very friendly locals all around. There is also a boat launch about 1/10 of a mile away, probably 300 yards to walk to.
We visited upstate NY in the middle of winter due to a family matter. While typically a summer cottage, Arthur was more than happy to accommodate our winter arrival. We were told that with it being winter that they would supply any snow removal services that we needed (plowing, shoveling, salt, etc) and were happy to see upon arrival that the driveway was indeed plowed and the walk salted. However, during our week-long stay it snowed several more times, resulting in a very slick, snowy driveway, that Arthur then refused to plow again. Upon arrival the house was clean and appeared as the ad stated. We were told that the cottage was family friendly and the description states that children were welcome. However after the initial inspection we soon realized that the house was NOT child friendly. There are two stairways in the home (one leading to the loft bedroom and one leading to the basement/bunkbed/laundry room) both of which are very steep. That being said, we were concerned with our 3 toddler boys navigating the stairs. There was one baby gate upstairs that was non-functional and no hand rail leading to the basement, nor a lock on the basement door leading down the steps, which could easily keep little ones from plummeting down the stairs. We ended up moving around furniture to make it livable with small children for the week. This also made it nearly impossible to utilize half of the house. We had a few other issues during our stay as well, including leaking in the basement when we ran the shower, a busted toilet bowl that had to be replaced and the dryer randomly tripped a breaker any time it was used. Our stay was, as I said, in the winter, but the deck area is also completely unsafe for children. The railing bars on the deck are way too far apart and in several spots are large enough for me to fit my entire body through, meaning children could EASILY fall the 12-15ft below. Furthermore, the water STINKS. The TV in the living room plays basic channels, the downstairs TV isn't connected to any thing, so no viewing there. While we were visiting my grandmothers condition worsened so we asked Arthur if we could extend our stay. He happily agreed until the day before our original checkout date and then conveniently "forgot" that his wife had friends coming over that same week, so we were then stranded with no where to stay. Overall, the view was gorgeous, the beds comfy but if you're looking for something family friendly and with good owners, then avoid!
We are in the heart of the Finger Lakes, where the wineries and breweries are endless. The lake is beautiful and offers a lot of fun things to do! If you want to go further, the local communities of Penn Yan, Hammondsport, Watkins Glen and Corning are all fun destinations to explore. Plenty to do, but also a peaceful setting to just relax and stay put.
