Convenient to restaurants, pubs, and museums.
Comfortable stay, but some amenities within the cottage were broken. Wished we had a washer/dryer machine as the weather was damp.

Many nice features, especially pop-up tv and plush bedding...but some quirky things, too.
The flat is right beside the Majestic Wine Warehouse, Blackhall Rd, Kendal. Steady stream of traffic, cars and buses there, as well as throughout town. Noise isn’t terribly noticeable and it is nice to have a car park permit to use in lot around behind the wine store. (BTW, we found parking to be VERY limited in the Lake District.). The metal key to the main entrance is frustrating to get to work. Much easier to use the other key to the kitchen door. There is a small table outside on a hard ground cover, did not use. There is no coffee machine, so had to use microwave coffee pods. No paper towels. In bath, there were no washcloths, no bath soap or any toiletries, and the tub/shower was big, but lacking all safety features, so beware! When we arrived by train, we walked to the car rental and drove to find the apartment. Its address did not come up on google. I did not have specific directions. We were a bit frantic in the Fri. afternoon traffic, went in circles for awhile, then somehow, luckily saw the two-digit number on a gate. And figured out which was the car park with the “code” the owner had sent me. Good points - very close proximity to bus stands. Heaps of stores on the streets nearby, all within walking distance. Lots of eating places reachable by foot, particularly Mason’s Yard, Michelle’s Coffee Shop and Farmhouse Kitchen. Went by bus to Windermere for a half-day Six Lakes tour which was highly enjoyable, thanks to our tour guide Carl. Went by train out of Kendal to lower Scotland for half a day, very easy! The amazing pop-up TV and luxurious pillows and bedding were divine. BBC programs were superb. The owner Tina responded promptly to queries. And oh, it was so sweet seeing all the people walking their dogs, and being near the River Kent. (Went to the bar at the Riverside Hotel our last day and sat on the balcony overlooking the water...beautiful!) In summary, a host of good memories stemming from choosing an affordable place in town..but I do suggest you know exactly how to make your way to it, with the fewest right turns possible, especially if you are an aging American!

Good central location
The rental is centrally located and though next to a fairly busy road is quiet enough to not disturb sleep. I was unfortunate enough to arrive and find the place unheated, boiler not working, and not even stocked with toilet paper, apparently due to a mistake by the Property company. Once the boiler could be started working and the place had slowly warmed up and I had toilet paper the place was perfectly decent. Parking is in Blackhall public car park very close and convenient, though the instructions I received never gave the name or exact location of the car park and instead simply gave a post code which in fact covers a quite large area that even extends to the other side of the river. One thing the property currently lacks is a booklet of information, such as how to get the boiler going if it displaying a fault code due to low pressure in the radiator circuit ( which I suspect it will do every few months if not maintained). The owner quickly emailed instructions when requested, so presumably I’m not the first to arrive with the rent inside room temperature at 9 degrees. But as I said , once things were working the place is not bad.

About the host

Host profile image
Hi I am Tina - me and my family visited the lake district for the first time last year and fell head over heels in love with the place. After returning back to the normal rat race one morning we decided to take a risk and follow our hearts which was to buy this property. Our aim was to share the experience of getting away from it all for like minded people. We really hope you enjoy your stay at Joseph Cottage

Why they chose this property

Historic Town of Kendal…
The bustling market town of Kendal, built in distinctive limestone, is a popular hub for shopping and culture in South Lakeland. Home to exciting festivals, a vibrant arts centre, fine museums and world renowned art gallery. Historically, ‘The Auld Grey Town’ was one of the most important woollen textile centres in the country, producing ‘Kendal Green’ and other ‘Kendal cottons’ – its numerous yards (Joseph cottage being part of Kendal’s heritage located in one of these historic yard) once filled with workshops processing cloth, leather and foodstuffs. Kendal was also a centre for shoe making, carpet and snuff manufacture, and synonymous with the production of the famous Kendal Mint Cake.

What makes this property unique

So many reasons to stay...
Step outside to enjoy beautiful walks along the River Kent or take leisurely stroll up to Kendal Castle where you can take in the spectacular and far reaching views.

Stride onto world famous fells, wander through glorious valleys, take to the water under wind or power or explore the landscapes that inspired such artists as Wordsworth, Wainwright and Beatrix Potter.

Visit critically acclaimed gastropubs and Michelin-starred restaurants, or cook for yourself with ingredients from farmers markets, food festivals and specialist local shops and delis.

Embrace the great outdoors and don't forget to bring your camera!
