About the property

Welcome to Carson's Cabin - the longest 'family owned' rental property in Bat Cave. Originally purchased by my grandfather in 1947, I have owned the house since 1987 and now it will be passed down to our grandson, Carson Kincaid.

We have completely remodeled the upstairs (downstairs not yet available) and have updated all utilities and living spaces. Practically everything is new - granite counter tops, cabinets, bathroom, wiring, and plumbing. In 2010, we redid the back porch to make it an extension of the living space. Spend many restful hours on the porch listening to the river, reading a good book, or taking a well-deserved nap!!

Come stay with us and experience a new level in Mountain Luxury!!

About Randy and Brenda Kincaid

Carson was born in 2012 and is our 'Pride and Joy'. He is so much fun to be around. As our only grandson and the heir to this property, and considering that my grandfather, Charles Carr Harrelson, was the first in our family to own this house, I thought it only fitting to call the house 'Carson's Cabin'.

My name is Randy Kincaid. I practically grew up in this house and spent every summer there until 1968 when my grandparents sold their mountain property. My wife, Brenda, and I purchased the house in 1987 and have been continual part-time residents of Bat Cave since then. I am a retired elementary school principal but still do contract work for our local school system. Brenda retired as the Director of Cooperative Education and Student Employment from the community college in our town.

Since retiring, we have spent most of our time remodeling Carson's Cabin with the thoughts that most of our free time will be spent there since getting up early to go to work is no longer a concern. Many of the upgrades we've made have been to make life easier for us while also appealing to the 'guests' we may have stay in our house.

Carson is our hobby right now as we babysit him 3-4 days a week. When not involved with this, I love to run races and compete in triathlons (be sure to check out the Lake Lure Sprint Triathlon if interested). The most notorious triathlon I have completed is the Escape from Alcatraz in San Francisco. Just now starting to get back in shape to do even more in the future. Brenda enjoys couponing and saving money!!! She also enjoys handling most of the phone calls involved with our rental business. You will probably hear from her soon!

Randy and Brenda Kincaid purchased this cottage in 1987

Why Randy and Brenda Kincaid chose Bat Cave

A friend who got me interested in real estate investing once said, 'Never buy a property with your heart!'

Well, if you read the section above, you know that's exactly what I 'DIDN'T' do. I was upset when my grandparents sold the property so when the opportunity presented itself for me to buy the house, there was no doubt that I had to have it. Obviously with the name (Carson's Cabin), I have no plans of selling and hopefully, one day, this house will be his!!

What makes this cottage unique

Spend the weekend here and you know the benefits - so peaceful, so restful - OMG, an almost perfect place!

If you're fortunate enough to be here on Sunday mornings, be sure to take your cup of coffee to the back porch and listen to the church music from Bat Cave Baptist Church right across the river and up on the mountain. An unforgettable experience!!

Spend time down by the riverside. We have a chiminea and chairs on the lawn for your use and enjoyment. The sound of the river is almost 'hypnotic'; you will definitely feel the calming effect!!

Loved Carson's Cabin

  • 5 of 5

Our stay at Carson's Cabin was delightful. The owners were informative, kind and welcoming, which is reflected in their home. The renovations are creative, efficient and a result of quality work. The large kitchen is well appointed and the back porch is a highlight. Accompanied by the scereen property including the river provides a peaceful retreat. The location was convenient to all we wanted to do in the area. We would love to return in the future.

Owner's Response: Thanks so much for your comments!! With the house being part of our family for the biggest part of 70 years, a lot of love went into our current and planned renovations. This is our "home" and we want it to feel like yours while you're there. The porch and the sound of the river creates an environment where anyone can relax and let the stresses of daily life go by. We certainly look forward to your return!! Randy and Brenda

Nicely renovated with a great porch overlooking a relaxing river!!!

  • 4 of 5

The house is located on a well-traveled road and does not have great curb appeal, which caused some apprehension when we arrived around 5:30 on a Saturday afternoon. HOWEVER, once inside, we were very pleasantly surprised to find a clean, cozy, beautifully-renovated house, with an awesome back porch overlooking a slow-flowing river. Particular care was put into the woodwork and cabinetry throughout. The kitchen was roomy, with all the utensils we needed. The large back porch was our favorite spot to relax. On our third day, a torrential rainstorm swept through the area, but we were able to enjoy reading books and watching the river swell from the porch, which we did with several glasses of wine. Internet service was reliable the entire week we were there. It was a very relaxing getaway! Owners were very hospitable and it was obvious that they love their property.

For dining, we highly recommend Medina's in nearby Chimney Rock.

Owner's Response: Thanks for the review. The house has been where it is (in proximity to the road) for more than my 66 years! Very little we can do about that. However, the same love and attention that we put into the interior and back porch is being planned for the front of the house as well. We'd prefer people to be surprised when they enter than to be dazzled by the outside only to be disappointed when they walk in the front door. We appreciate your comments about the work we've done. We also agree about the back porch. It would be easy to spend your entire time there. In the past, we've had an artist to spend several months there because of the view, the river, and the solitude. We also had an author finish her book while sitting on the same back porch. We frequently eat at Medina's so we're glad you enjoyed it as well. Finally, we hope you'll consider our cabin for any future trips you may make to the southern NC Mountains!!

Great vacation!!

  • 5 of 5

Carsen's Cabin was perfect for what we were looking for! It was spotless and very well appointed, and the fact that it was located near Chimney Rock, Hendersonville, Brevard and Asheville made it convenient for everything we wanted to do. It was so nice to have the river lapping at the backyard with the chimenea close-by. It was cool to hang out by the fire and cook smores at night. It was also nice to be able to retire with the sliding doors open to the screened in porch with the sounds from the "babbling brook" lulling us to sleep. Of course with all of the hiking and exploring we did that wasn't too difficult. The interior had a lot of nice features-especially the extensive lighting and ceiling fans. Between the fans and the breeze through the screened-in porch we hardly ran the AC during the first week of August! We did have perfect weather which didn't hurt things.

Brenda and Randy were very nice and helpful and made us feel welcome. All in all, we had a wonderful time and would certainly consider staying at Carson's Cabin during our next vacation in the Mountains!

Owner's Response: Thanks for the great review!! We are in the process of replacing the chimenea with a firepit that will allow even more to enjoy a good fire near the river. We personally think the back porch coupled with the sounds from the river is the "selling point" of the whole cabin. If someone wants to relax, this is the place. Thanks also for the comments about the interior of the cabin. We did our best to bring everything up to date while hopefully preserving the character of the house from when my grandparents owned it. We try to be as helpful to our guest as possible making each of them feel as if they're family. As family, we look forward to your return!!

Surpassed all expectations

  • 5 of 5

My mom and I stayed her during our trip to NC. It was for my birthday and the one thing I wanted was to stay by the river. The moment we opened the door at the cabin, we heard the river. It was so spectacular. The pictures really don't do this cabin justice. It was absolutely perfect for our needs. We each had a bedroom with access to the back deck and we could hear and see the river from our rooms. I would definitely stay here again should I visit that area of NC again.

It's super convenient to Asheville/Biltmore, Chimney Rock, and Dupont State Park (all sites we visited). While the internet didn't work (and I called Brenda about it, but it never did and I honestly was ok with that), the tv's did. We usually did so much each day we were there that we both went to our rooms and were able to relax with the tv's. That was enjoyable.

I will warn that the cabin is right on the road so there is noise from passing cars, but honestly that was comforting since we were two women in a cabin in a place we had never been before. The only thing that I would change about the cabin (if it's possible), is the shower. There's very little water pressure and, for someone like me who has thick hair, it takes much longer to shower than normal.

Owner's Response: Thanks for the review. We're glad you enjoyed your stay and will consider us for any future visits to the area. Wi-Fi has been "sketchy" here lately but has always worked. We have a new modem but perhaps it's our location in the mountains, it loses signal. We tell guests if the "online" light is not on, simply unplug the modem for a minute, then plug back in to reboot. This usually works all of the time. Most recent guest did this and everything is working fine. Will definitely have this checked by provider. The proximity to the road has been that way since my family originally bought the property in 1947. Without a doubt, you can hear vehicles as they pass mostly when you're entering or at the front of the house. Typically, they go by so infrequently and quickly that we don't notice it. Further, most of our time is spent on the back porch, in the back yard, down by the river so that it becomes a non-issue. However, we are glad that the noise let you know that you were not completely isolated. Finally, the water pressure in the shower could be a result of installing a "rain shower" type shower head. With it being larger with more holes, the overall pressure could be lessened to disperse water over a larger area. I will check with my guy there to make sure all plumbing is working properly. We do appreciate this type of feedback because we do want every guest to enjoy their stay and leave as refreshed and reinvigorated as we do. If something keeps that from happening, we want to know so that we can make necessary adjustments if possible. Thanks again for your stay and your review. We look forward to your return.
