Monsaraz is a parish of the municipality of Reguengos de Monsaraz, with 88.29 km² of area and 782 inhabitants (2011). Density: 8.9 h / km².
Former county seat, first moved in 1838 and finally in 1851 to the then Reguengos village of Monsaraz, today city. It is important not to confuse Reguengos de Monsaraz with Monsaraz. There are two different locations separated by about 15 kilometers.
The Monsaraz village was conquered from the Moors in 1167, the men of Gerald the Fearless. The first charter came to be granted by D. Alfonso III on January 15, 1276. The Monsaraz Castle played over the centuries the role of the Guadiana sentry, guarding the border with Castile. The village came to administer three parishes: the parish of Santa Maria da Lagoa, Santiago and São Bartolomeu.
It was the county seat until 1838, when the function passed to the parish of Reguengos.
