About Shannan Greenbaum

Fritz Voelker and his family are the owners of the Heron Oaks properties. Fritz lives right next door at Heron Oak’s Big House. He lives there from June through October. Fritz is available to help you anytime with questions or concerns that you might have regarding either the Cottage or the region. During the winter months, Fritz enjoys living in Colorado.

Shannan Greenbaum purchased this cottage in 1990

Why Shannan Greenbaum chose South Bristol

Fritz’s family began the family tradition of enjoying summertime Maine in the 1800’s. His grandchildren are the 6th generation to vacation in the area. Fritz and his mother, Margaret, had a vision of building two houses on this stunning John’s Bay oceanfront property. Their vision came to be in the 1990’s when the construction of the Heron Oak’s Cottage and the Big House were completed.

What makes this cottage unique

This location in Maine is impossible to beat. South Bristol has the true small-town, Maine fishing village ambiance without the hectic tourism or isolation of other vacation areas. Its central location lends easily to day trips to popular areas. The summertime visitors have the common goal of their passion for family, blue oceans and the stunning and pure beauty that is Maine.

Wonderful Maine Vacation

  • 5 of 5

Our family really enjoyed our stay at Heron Oaks. The house is well equipped and very comfortable. The owners went the extra mile to make sure our time here was special. The kitchen is well stocked for cooking and serving meals. Everything was truly as described or better. We loved exploring the property and hanging out on the dock. It's hard for me to put into words how beautiful the view is from the deck and the many windows in the house. We all slept like babies in the super comfy beds. The weather was perfect for leaving the windows open and listening to the many sounds of Maine. We spent most of our days checking out the nearby villages and lighthouses. Our two teenage girls enjoyed the ropes at Monkey C Monkey Do obstacle course about 30 minutes from the house. We went on a Hardy Boat puffin cruise as suggested by "Fritz" the owners dad who lives next door. It was so much fun! One evening we were treated to a lobster dinner and delicious blueberry muffins by Fritz. This was our first "lobstah" experience and would have been disastrous if we had tried it on our own! This dinner was a kind and thoughtful touch to a near perfect vacation. We all fell in love with Maine. Everything just seems to be a little better there. I would surely recommend Heron Oaks to a friend and we can't wait to visit again!

Heron Oaks is less than a mile away from South Bristol, Christmas Cove, which is located in the heart of New England's most picturesque region. In South Bristol you can enjoy an authentic seafood lunch on the decks of the Lobsterman's CO-OP or Osiers while admiring the picture perfect views of the harbor. The world famous Christmas Cove is home of the Coveside restaurant, bar and marina where you can dine on fresh clams and lobsters, and feast on the dramatic and spectacular out-island views of the Atlantic ocean. It is also famous for summertime live music three times a week including Sunday afternoon on the deck. If you are in the mood for a Maine tourist town, the infamous Boothbay Harbor is 30 miles away. Pemaquid Point Light House is a MUST SEE and is 15 miles away. After dining in the restaurant, you can enjoy an ice cream cone while touring the lighthouse and viewing the local art. Pemaquid Beach (12 miles) is a true sandy beach and it is a great place to take a refreshing dip in the Atlantic. You can eat lunch at their picnic style grill and they offer beach supplies at a low daily rental rate. For a high-end, sit down dinner to celebrate that special occasion, the Bradley Inn in New Harbor (13 miles) is your place. New Harbor also has a grocery store and the popular Shaw's Fish, Lobster Wharf and Restaurant. On a day of calm seas, from New Harbor you can catch the Hardy Boat ferry to Monhegan Island. The island is an artist colony and was designated a National Landmark for its coastal and island flora in 1966. No cars are allowed on the island so be prepared to hoof it with a picnic to the breathtaking cliffs! If you are in the mood for a historical tour, visit Fort William Henry (12 miles) , also located in the Pemaquid region. If you have seen the Last of the Mohicans, you will recognize this historically important fort!!! The town of Damariscotta (15 miles) has a hospital, grocery stores, movie theater, pharmacy, seafood market (with Maine oysters!!!) and everything else you might need during your stay. It is renowned for it's shopping New England style, local restaurants, award-winning bookstore and wonderful farmer's market. This is just the tip of the iceberg....so dive in!!!
