Charming cabin in the woods within walking distance to Lake Michigan

Bedrooms 4
Property type cottage
Minimum Stay 3 - 4 nights

About the property

4 bedrooms, Sleeps 10

Fern Hollow was designed and built in 1980 in traditional Michigan-cottage style. Taking cues from old summer camps, Fern Hollow creates an atmosphere where guests can return to their youth and a time when they enjoyed 'camping out' with family and friends. Whether sitting around the campfire or the fieldstone fireplace, enjoying an outdoor shower, sleeping in the open air of the bunkhouse, or strolling the trails to the beach and playground, time spent at Fern Hollow is sure to relax the mind, sooth the soul, and return you to a time and place once cherished but not forgotten.

Fern Hollow was built by a seasoned local contractor who was nearing retirement and who welcomed the opportunity to build a replica of the building style he claimed 'he cut his teeth on' in the 1930's as a young carpenter. His experience and attention to detail show throughout the cottage in authentic elements such as a hand stacked fieldstone fireplace, French-doors, open-shelving, single-timber-hand-cut beveled window sills and a center-floor radiant furnace ideal for cool Michigan mornings.

Fern Hollow rests on 13 wooded acres and is perched on the highest ground. The cottage is nestled at the center of what was nine 100-yr old white (self-trimming) pine trees. In order to created what is traditionally referred to as the Seven Sisters that surround and protect a cottage, two of the old trees were removed, one of which was already broken in half. This stand of evergreens provide a unique 'whooshing' sound as the winds move through the pine boughs. This can be enjoyed by opening the 4 sets of French doors inviting the surrounding porch to become a part of the house creating the feeling of an open camp in the woods.

Fern Hollow has served as the epicenter for over 30 years of family reunions and many annual gatherings of old friends. Our cottage is being offered as a rental for the first time in its history.

We invite you to join in our history of spending summer days with loved ones, nature, and time.

What makes this cottage unique

Walking distance to Lake Michigan beach! Roughly a half mile total.

-It is a path walk until a gravel road which you take to cross Adams Road and continue on in through the park. You go by the playground and parking and then head down the beautiful newly done stairs complete with a handicap ramp as well for easier access.

Feel free to goggle 'West Side County Park' for images and to get a better feel of the establishment.

Starting with the home. Such a wonderful and lovely place! Unique in so many ways. The outside bedroom, the outside shower stall. That may have been my favorite part! I showered outside everyday. What a treat to be in the middle of the woods and be outside showering :) Even in the heat, the house remained cool as its comfortably nestled in the woods and you can open the entire place up on all sides. The porch was one of our favorite spots. Games at night and quite contemplation on the swing in the morning with the soft sound of rustling leaves and that sound I havent heard since I was a child in the mountains of the trees snapping and settling. I loved it. Just a short walk and you are in another world with Lake Michigan and sandy beaches. I would stay here again in a moment. It has everything. If you want to do some shopping Saugatuck is just a a short drive away. Thanks so very much for have a place I could create memories with my family and my father at. I haven't spent quality time with my dad in almost 16 years. It was wonderful.

A great place to get away!

  • 5 of 5

We booked this property for a bachelor party thinking it would be a "summer camp" feel, and boy were we right. Bunk beds, a bunk house, a fire pit, nature trials, it had everything we were looking for. We very much enjoyed the character and charm of the property, and appreciated that the "little things" were well taken care of. This is an excellent property, we would definitely stay again!

Perfect Cabin Retreat!

  • 5 of 5

The place is perfect! The cabin is charming and there are just enough amenities where you're not "roughing it." The property is tucked back in the woods where you can't see any neighbors, and you're only a 10-minute walk to Lake Michigan. Ali is a great hostess, quick to reply, and goes out of the way to make the visit special. Definitely recommended.

A Perfect Week!

  • 5 of 5

We have just returned from a perfect Pure Michigan week at Fern Hollow. Our family needed a week to be together and relax and Fern Hollow was the answer. It reminded my husband and I of a place we used to visit with his family years and years ago. Tons of privacy on the beautiful wooded lot, no TV, no wifi, no AC, puzzles on the porch, fire every night, reading, laughing, eating ... it was PERFECT. We walked to the beach through the trails with a beach cart. We also would go back for sunset which was always amazing. A few days we visited towns like St. Joseph and Saugatuck (our favorite on the West side of the state!). For half of the week we had 9 people (4 adults and 5 children) in the cottage and we managed just fine - it never felt crowded. We never had a problem with just one bathroom and we loved using the outdoor shower. The beds were incredibly comfortable! This was definitely a summer vacation that we will never forget!

** Our dinner at Salt of the Earth in downtown Fennville was one of my top 5 favorite meals ever. Absolutely amazing. Go on an off night like Monday or Tuesday for immediate seating.

** There are plenty of beaches to choose from. We walked to the beach across the street, but I did hear that the beach farther up the road was less rocky. However, we enjoyed searching the rocks and finding Petoskey stones, fossils and other interesting rocks. One of the best beaches in the country is Oval Beach in Saugatuck - no rocks, caribbean sands and the water temp is much warmer. We went in the evening, but never during the day so I do not know how crowded it gets. It is worth a visit, though.

Family recharge

  • 5 of 5

I very last minute slid into a weekend at this little cabin due to a cancellation, and man was it exactly what we all needed!! It is in a neighborhood but set way back in the woods and really feels remote. The woods are magical with lightning bugs at night and the set-up is perfect with the fire ring and outdoor shower, as well as detached bedroom. My daughters loved both the bunkbeds and the sleeping porch and my dog has never been happier in the woods. The walk to the beach was a nice stroll, we drove with all the beach toys/ chairs during the day but the parking lot for beach is very reasonable, we walked to and fro for lunch, morning walks and sunset strolls, just too much to carry it all down for me. The stove is dated and could use replacing, (oven is a true adventure) but other than that, nothing bad to say. My husband thought it was expensive, but as it was exactly what I needed at that moment, I didn't mind. (Picture if pinterest wanted to do a log cabin)

Celebration of Family in a Quiet Setting

  • 5 of 5

My wife turned 60 this July. Rather than have a big party she wanted just to spend time with family at a relaxing place that had access to the pristine beaches of the western shore of Michigan. The Fern Hollow fit the bill! We stayed from 7/6-7/10. There were eight of us and four dogs. The cottage was perfect! My wife and I enjoyed the separate little cabin. It was fun to lay in bed there late at night and hear the kids laugh and tell stories as they sat around the fire pit. At first there was some grumbling that there was no wi-fi or TV, but that quickly ended. Rather than having technology occupy us we ended up having a great time talking, preparing our meals, roasting hot dogs over the fire and exploring the woods. The walk to the county park on the lake shore was only six minutes away. All of the beds were super comfortable. While this place may not be the best for families with little kids who need their DVD's and video games to keep them happy it was the perfect setting to spend quality time with our family. We loved it there!

Unique, beautiful, relaxing and fun

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I booked this place and invited our friends for my 30th birthday weekend. Ten of us stayed here very comfortably over five days. It's been an unseasonably cool and rainy August, not really beach weather, but we didn't mind spending most of our time at the cottage. The location is ideal--a leisurely walk to the beach, and a 10-15 minute drive to supermarkets and area attractions. No one had trouble finding the place, even after dark. Everything we needed was there. We had brought some extra box fans, but the place stayed very cool and comfortable thanks to all the tree cover. Plus, there are ceiling fans and box fans at the cottage.

This place is one of a kind. It reminded me so much of my grandparents' cottage in Caseville, where I spent my summers growing up. It really feels like you've been invited to a family cottage, with charm, character and warmth. It's been lovingly built and well maintained (I imagine it's a lot of work to keep the property trimmed and walkable, and they do a great job). We had fires inside in the mornings, and campfires in the evenings. We even got an owl to call back at us at night! The screen porch, living room, back picnic table, and fire pit provided us with many gathering places. There was also plenty of parking.

Finally, Ali was wonderful to work with throughout the process. We forgot our big waffle maker, and she is hanging on to it for us until we can collect it. That means a lot to us, and it's the kind of care and service that you won't find everywhere. Our guests loved Fern Hollow, and we did too. We would stay here again in a heartbeat!
